About the Law of Moses

1. We can learn from it– “For whatever things were written before

were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope” (Rom. 15:4)• the law was written before• the law was a part of scripture• the law can be a source for learning

About the Law of Moses

2. It was changed– “For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there

is also a change of the law” (Heb. 7:12)– the priesthood administered the law to the people– the priesthood changed (no priesthood through Aaron

today)– the law was changed (no law through Moses today!

• POINT: Old Testament for LEARNING; New Testament for LAW

Why Moses’ Law Cannot Be Our Rule Today

1. because it was changed (Heb. 7:12)

Why Moses’ Law Cannot Be Our Rule Today

2. because it cannot be perfectly lived (Acts 15:8-11)

– purified by faith– saved in same manner as Gentiles

• showed Jews that they cannot be saved with their revealed law

• showed Gentiles that they cannot be saved apart from revealed law (see Rom. 1:16—32; 2:12-16; 3:9, 10; etc.)

• Becoming a Christian is not becoming a Jew or Gentile (Gal. 3:28)

Why Moses’ Law Cannot Be Our Rule Today

3. because it was annulled– “For on the one hand there is an annulling of

the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God” (Heb. 7:18, 19; cf. Col. 2:14)

– intimated as being temporary from the beginning (Deut. 32:21; cf. Rom. 10:19)• prophets spoke of it being replaced (Jer. 31:31-

34)

Why Moses’ Law Cannot Be Our Rule Today

4. because it was weak– “For on the one hand there is an annulling of

the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God” (Heb. 7:18, 19; cf. Rom. 8:3; Heb. 8:7, 8)

– made none perfect (Is. 64:6)

Why Was the Law Given???

• “What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator” (Gal. 3:19; cf. Rom. 7:7)

HEBREWS 101 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

HEBREWS 105 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: "Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. 7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come––In the volume of the book it is written of Me––To do Your will, O God.’" 8 Previously saying, "Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them" (which are offered according to the law), 9 then He said, "Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God." He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
