Highlights from Los Alamos for October 1993
The following Los Alamos milestones were completed:
3342, "Progress Report on Analyses of Core, Cuttings, and ESF samples forAlteration History"
3365, "Field Guide to Fracture-lining Minerals"
3329, "Measured Solubilities and Speciations from Oversaturation Experiments ofNeptunium, Plutonium, and Americium in UE-25 Groundwater"
3381, "Natural Alteration in the Cooling Topopah Spring Tuff, Yucca Mountain,Nevada as an Analog to a Waste-Repository Hydrothermal Regime"
4012, "Diagenetic Alteration of Tuffs in Yucca Wash and Northern Crater Flat"
The following Los Alamos report was published:
"Geologic Evaluation of Six Nonwelded Tuff Sites in the Vicinity of Yucca
Mountain, Nevada for a Surface-Based Test Facility for the Yucca Mountain Project"
by D. Broxton, S. Chipera, F. Byers Jr., and C. Rautman (LA-12542-MS, 83 pp.).
Los Alamos hosted the DOE/NRC Technical Exchange on Radionuclide Migration, October
13-15. Los Alamos principal investigator Ines Triay presented results of a thorough study of
Np sorption onto Yucca Mountain tuffs as a function of temperature, groundwater
chemistry, and radionuclide concentration. This sorption data will be used in the next
Performance Assessment cycle. Robert Rundberg of the International Programs project
presented supplementary information, concentrating on the mechanistic aspects of Np
sorption onto oxide minerals. Results of solubility experiments on Pu, Am, and Np in J-13
and UE-25p #1 water were presented by Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory staff. C. Drew Tait
discussed results of Pu speciation in carbonate systems. He also presented data on the study
of Np speciation, using NMR and uranium carbonate, which validated the Nuclear Energy
Agency database. Pamela Rogers presented AFM studies of the surface of iron oxides; the
intent of this work is to elucidate surface reactions of radionuclides with tuff. A Los Alamos
site visit was conducted on October 15 and included presentations at the Photoacoustic
Spectroscopy laboratory, Transport laboratory, Atomic Force Microscopy laboratory, Mass
Specrometer laboratory, and Caisson facility.

Los Alamos Monthly Highlights for October 1993
WBS 1.2.3.1.2 Test Management and Integration. Staff represented the Test Coordination
Office at weekly surface-based testing meetings and participated in review of proposed
Revision 4 of AP-5.21Q, Field Work Activation. Staff provided field coordination and PI
support for three ESF'north-portal starter tunnel tests: Geologic Mapping, Constrqction
Monitoring, and Perched Water (a contingency test in the starter tunnel). Staff began
planning Los Alamos sample collection activities in the SRG-5 borehole in support of WBS
1.233.1.2.2.
WBS 1.2.3.2.1.1.1 Transport Pathways. In XRD studies, new chabazite and clinoptilolite
samples from Western Idaho and Eastern Washington were characterized as new references
to improve the quantitative analysis of zeolites from Yucca Mountain. XRD studies of UZ-16
were extended into the Topopah Spring Member, and sample preparation on deeper
samples resumed. XRD analysis of the basal vitrophyre of the Topopah Spring Member was
emphasized this month; these data will be compared with the alteration associated with the
upper vitrophyre of the Topopah Spring Member, analyzed earlier this summer. Alteration
associated with the vitrophyres provides information on both early high-temperature
processes at Yucca Mountain (analogous to some potential repository-induced thermal
alteration) and later lower-temperature water-rock interaction with transport through the
unsaturated zone.
G. Guthrie and D. Bish presented a short course for the Mineralogical Society of America
titled 'Health Effects of Mineral Dusts," 22-24 October in association with the Geological
Society of America meeting in Boston, MA. G. Guthrie also moderated a symposium titled
"Geochemical Aspects of Minerals in Physiological Fluids." The short course and the
symposium appear to be ushering in a new interest within the Mineralogical Society of
America in environmental mineralogy, as evidenced by discussions at the Mineralogical
Society of America business meeting. W. Carey, B. Carlos, and R. Raymond also attended
the Geological Society of America meeting.
Laboratory experiments suggest that silica dissolution, migration, and deposition is likely
to occur along the waste-imposed thermal gradient. Late-stage cooling fractures in the
devitrified Topopah Spring Member indicate the consequences of fracture-related silica
leaching. Backscattered-electron images of a quartz-filled fracture in the Topopah Spring
Member (drill core USW G-4, 984 ft depth) show significantly increased porosity within
2 mm of the fracture. This porosity is readily seen in SEM images. The nature of the silica
dissolution that is involved in the development of this pore space is revealed in XRD
Predecisional informatiopreliminary dat-do not reference 2
Los Alamos Monthly Highlights for October 1993
studies that show extensive loss of cristobalite (but not of feldspars and quartz) adjacent to
the fracture. The loss of cristobalite and development of porosity are also evident in high-
magnification SEM images of a cristobalite-rich horizon of the Topopah Spring Member in
drill core USW G-2, 1505 ft depth. The anhedral cristobalite grains that are prominent in
unaltered portions of the tuff are almost entirely absent in the altered portions, leaving large
amounts of pore space.
A paper titled "Paleogeothermal and Paleohydrologic Conditions in Silicic Tuff from
Yucca Mountain, Nevada" (D. Bish and J. Aronson; Clays and Clay Min. 41, pp. 148-161) was
distributed. This report describes the termination of significant hydrothermal activity
beneath Yucca Mountain 11 million years ago.
A report titled 'Geologic Evaluation of Six Nonwelded Tuff Sites in the Vicinity of Yucca
Mountain, Nevada for a Surface-Based Test Facility for the Yucca Mountain Project" was
published (D. Broxton, S. Chipera, F. Byers, Jr., and C. Rautman; LA-12542-MS, 83 pp.). This
report examines the lithologic, chemical, mineralogic, and hydrologic properties of five
possible sites for surface-based test facilities in both vitric and zeolitic nonwelded tuffs.
Surface-based facilities can be used to supplement the information to be obtained from ESF
tests beneath the actual repository block; surface sites may become particularly important if
ESF workings do not allow access to portions of the Calico Hills Formation. The report
recommends sites at Busted Butte (vitric nonwelded) and at Prow Pass (zeolitic
nonwelded).
WBS 12.3.2.1.2 Stability of Minerals and Classes. Staff continued to write the study plan
for this activity. A discussion of reaction kinetics, particularly for cristobalite, was
included, incorporating recent experimental results. Staff also included recent results that
suggest that both analcime and clinoptilolite undergo congruent dissolution at rates much
slower than rates obtained from simple batch experiments. The dissolution rates of analcime
and clinoptilolite also appear to decrease as the silica concentration increases.
WBS 1Z3A..1±3 Sorption Models. Staff participated in the DOE/NRC Technical Exchange
Meeting, giving two oral presentations and hosting a tour of the AFM facility. Staff
prepared an abstract for the national MRS meeting in December, and they are writing a
paper to be included in the proceedings from that meeting.
Predecisioanl infomtation-pirlinuiary data-do not reference 3
Los Alamos Monthly Highlights for October 1993
WBS 1.2.3.4.1.3 Speciation/Solubility.
Speciation. Task members participated in the NRC Technical Exchange held in Los Alamos
on 13-15 October. A presentation was made by C. Drew Tait titled "Actinide Carbonate
Speciation Studies by PAS and NMR Spectroscopies." Tours of the laboratory areas
(including the PAS spectrometer) in the CMR building were conducted for meeting
attendees. A large-scale reprocessing/purification effort to generate a new stock of Np-237
solution is presently underway, with a pilot trial completed this month. This effort is
anticipated to be the focus of activities during November. PAS studies continued on the
Pu(lV)-carbonate system, with quantitative measurements on the 485.5 nm peak as a
function of pH and on the speciation of the system at pH=8.5 and low (bi)carbonate
concentrations. Control experiments were conducted in the temperature-dependent
absorption study of the Np(02)+-carbonate system.
Solubility. Staff from Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory made a presentation titled "Recent
Solubility Results" at the NRC Technical Exchange on 13-15 October.
WBS 12.3.4.1.5.1 Retardation Sensitivity Analysis.
Integrated Transport. Staff prepared a draft of a final report on the FY93 site-scale flow and
transport simulation. It is anticipated that three species of Np, Cs, and Sr will be modeled.
A video showing modeling results for FY93 was completed and shown at the DOE-NRC
exchange on 13-15 October. Staff met With W. Glassley of LLNL to discuss the EQ3/6
interface for FEHM.
Code optimization. The memory-managed version of FEHM has been put under
configuration management. The system is marketed by INTERSOLV.
WBS 116 Exploratory Studies Facility. Staff completed three test planning and job
packages: Geologic Mapping, Construction Monitoring, and Perched Water for the north-
ramp starter tunnel. Staff began planning for the LLNL large block test; site selection at Fran
Ridge for this test was underway.

WBS 1.2.6.8.4 IDS. The IDS design and development work continued on schedule;. the
M&O is responsible for design and development of IDS for various PI's. This month the
M&O completed an engineering plan for IDS, which was reviewed by Los Alamos, signed
by the ED&D, and released by the M&O.
Staff visited WIPP at Carlsbad, New Mexico, to become familiar with the data management
system used at there. They met with staff from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Branch, to
discuss IDS concepts developed by this branch for the mining industry.

The construction of the ESF starter tunnel alcove to support testing is nearing completion. Theactivity is fully supported by geologic mapping, consolidated sampling, hydrochemistry, andconstruction monitoring test activities; no perched water has been identified in the ESF.
WBS 1Z3.21.1.1 Transport Pathways. Quantitative-mineralogy data collection was completedfor all intervals of drill core UE-25 UZ-16, and the data are presently being prepared forquantitative analysis. Samnple spacing is closer in this core than in previous core studies, providing greater confidence in mineral-abundance trends important for sorption, waterevolution, and thermal loading evaluation. Particularly important are the distributions of thesilica polymorphs (quart, cristobalite, and tridymite); variability in the stabilities of thesepolymorphs is an important factor in silica dissolution/precipitation under thermal loading.
WBS 1±3±5 Volcanism. B. Crowe gave a presentation titled "Probability and MagmaticEffects" to the National Academy of Sciences on 9 November.
Following a systematic review of field relationships at the Lathrop Wells volcanic center, staffreached a strong consensus that Lathrop Wells was formed in four major eruptive episodes, separated by significant time breaks of thousands to tens of thousands of years. This polycyliceruptive behavior will be factored into volcanic risk assessment.
WBS 1±.3.3.1.3.1 Reactive Tracer Testing. Transport experiments were conducted on each ofthe C-Wells fracture specimens for Task 1.23.4.1.4. These fractures were not as well mated asthe Bandelier tuff fracture run previously, and the dispersive characteristics are somewhatdifferent. Nonetheless, systematic differences in the dissolved iodide and microsphere tracerbreakthrough curves are evidence of matrix diffusion effects in the Yucca Mountain fractures.
WBS 1.3.4.1.2.1 Batch Sorption. Staff continued to perform batch sorption experiments tostudy the influence of organic coatings on Np sorption onto tuff. Our results indicate thatdihydroxyphenylalanine (dopa) does not have a significant influence on Np sorption onto oxideminerals, which suggests that dopa does not have a strong affinity for Np and does notinfluence its sorption behavior significantly.
Staff submitted a summary of the sorption data to be used in the Total System PerformanceAssessment calculations for 1993 to the performance assessment group of SNL.

November 1993 Highlights from Los Alamos
WBS 12.3.4.1Z3 Sorption Models. Staff prepared a presentation for the Materials ResearchSociety fall meeting in December. They received a sample of maghemite separated from YuccaMountain tuff and are developing methods to mount the sample for AFM experiments.
WBS 1.2.3.4.1.3 SpeciationlSolubility. Speciation. Despite a large number of publications, thecurrent knowledge of the solubility and hydrolysis constants for Np(V) is unsatisfactory, andthis problem must be resolved before solubility and sorption data can be modeled. A properunderstanding of NpO2+ hydrolysis reactions is also a prerequisite for understanding NpO2+carbonate complexation reactions, which will be the key thrust area for this task in FY94. Thismonth they began to review the data in the literature to determine the trends and the conditionsunder which they can examine the hydrolysis.
The temperature dependent UV-VIS-NIR absorption study on Np(V)-carbonate complexescontinued this month, concentrating on the 'NpO2(C0 3)-" and 'NpO2(C03)2 3 - equillibrium.
Solubility. Staff continued the Np, Pu, and Am solubility experiments in 0.1 M NaCl04.
WBS 123.4.1.4.112 Transport. The study plan for Diffusion (WBS 1.2.3.4.1A.2) was approvedby YMPO.
Staff collected eight water samples from Well J-13 and distributed them to five investigators;they will use light scattering techniques to determine the particle concentration in each sample.
Staff began studies to assess the transport behavior of radionuclides in fractures. Six fracturessamples for these experiments are expected from the SMF in January 1994.
Using fracture samples from the ESF, staff performed batch sorption experiments to determinewhether the retardation of radionuclides by the minerals in the fractures is different from theretardation provided by the tuff matrix. They obtained sorption coefficients for two initial Npconcentrations
Preliminary XRD measurements on the ESP samples indicated that the sample from the fracturecenter is mainly quartz and the sample from the material closer to the fracture walls is mainlycalcite. Our Np retardation results for these samples are in good agreement with batch sorptioncoefficients obtained for pure minerals and tuff. Previous results (reported in earlier LosAlamos Monthly Activity Reports) indicate that Np sorption coefficients for quartz range from 0to 0.5 ml/g in J-13 water in the Np concentration range from 3 x 10-5 to 7 x 10-7 M. Np sorptioncoefficients for synthetic calcite range from 1 to 50 ml/g in J-13 water in the Np concentrationrange from 3 x 10-5 to 7 x 10-7 M. The Np sorption coefficients for non-zeolitic tuff range from 0to 2 m/g in J-13 in the same Np concentration range. This result is important because it appearsto indicate that batch sorption coefficients obtained with the mineral phases that predominate inthe fractures could be used to predict the transport of radionuclides in fractured tuff.
WBS 1.26 Exploratory Studies Facility. Staff supported field activities at the Fran Ridge sitefor the LLNL large-block test. Site preparation activities are underway and test constructionactivities are in the final planning stage.

November 1993 Highlights from Los Alamos
WBS 12.6.8.4 IDS. Staff provided darification of design requirements and continuedintegration and review of data-flow requirements controlled by test planning records andYMPO procedures. Staff reviewed field record submissions and facilitated data transfers to theconstruction and test organizations.
WBS 1±9.2.2 Project Control. The annual financial audit of Los Alamos was conducted byKPMG Peat Marwick. No identifiable concerns were noted.
Representatives of the Inspector General's office returned to Los Alamos to discuss issuesbrought up at their August 1993 Los Alamos visit. These issues were resolved by the TPO.
WBS 1.2.11.2/.31.5 Quality Assurance. Our major focus continues on revising documents tosatisfy the new Quality Assurance Requirements and Description (QARD). Of the forty-eightaffected documents, two are still in revision. All oter documents are in final preparation. Twodetailed technical procedures were issued.

The VAC shown by Los Alamos in this P&S account is attributed to an ernor in the ETCs for one of the componentsumnary accounts (OA341SILBO - Perform Integ. Trans Calc/Geochem/Phys Mod), which has been corrected, andto a work station error in another component summary account (OA341SlLC7 - Capital Equipment Update SunWorkstation N/Wrk), which mistakenly omitted BCWS and BCWP values for an account that is already completedand closed. Los Alamos will work with the PACS M&O to rectify the latter problem.

YUCCA MOUNTAIN PROJECTBIOLOGICAL RESOURCES PROGRAM
MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORTMARCH 1994
Summary of Work Accomplished During Report Period
EG&G Energy Measurements (EG&G/EM) conducted work for the Biological ResourcesTask (WBS 1.2.13.4.11) for the Project Office.
ISSUES and CONCERNS
0 On March 17, EG&G/EM field biologists observed that the new above-ground 8-inchwaterline from H-Road to C-Well would potentially prevent tortoises from movingfrom the northern tip of Fran Ridge west into Midway Valley. This potential impact totortoises was not identified at the time of the preactivity survey. EG&GIEM met withthe Project Office and is preparing-a report to assess the impacts on tortoises and toprovide mitigation recommendations. Until mitigation actions are taken, biologists willcontinue to monitor the pipeline to ensure no tortoises are trapped on either side.
WORK PROGRESS
* EG&G/EM participated in the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board meetings onMarch 21 and 22. These meetings were part of the TRB review of the YMPTerrestrial Ecosystems Program. EG&G/EM assisted with the field tour, presented anupdate on proposed changes in the Program, and participated in a roundtable discussionwith the Board concerning issues related to the Program.
* A draft was completed of the annual report of work accomplished in 1993 for the YMPBiological Resource Monitoring Program. The report is being submitted forDOEIYMP review.
* EG&G/EM scientists presented four oral presentations and one poster session at theannual meeting of the Desert Tortoise Council in Tucson, AZ. These presentationswere based on tortoise studies being conducted for YMP.
* EG&G/EM conducted two preactivity surveys to assess potential impacts on biologicalresources and two reclamation inventory. One biological resource survey report -andone reclamation stipulation report were submitted to Project Office.
* All other work was part of continuing studies. Radiomarked desert tortoises werelocated once each week. Side-blotched lizards were captured, marked, and released onnine plots to monitor the effects of site characterization activities. Topsoil stockpileswere checked to determine if re-application of a chemical stabilizing was needed.

* EG&G/EM conducted three preactivity surveys to assess potential impacts onbiological resources. Two biological resource survey and reclamation inventoryreports were submitted to Project Office. One resurvey for tortoises wasconducted. One casual access survey was conducted EG&G/EM (A. Hughes)also met with DOE/YMP (G. Ryder), DRI (P. Buck), and SAIC (M. Griffin) todiscuss the status of surveys and activities that may occur during the next severalmonths.
* Continued locating desert tortoises once weekly. One tortoise was active andanother had moved to a new burrow.
* Eleven topsoil stockpiles associated with fault line terizaton studies inCrater Flats were stabilized by seeding, mulching, and covering them with netting. The reseeding of the disturbed area at the ESF Borrow Pit Topsoil Stockpile wascompleted. The seeding and water harvesting treatments being tested atreclamation site 5 were completed.
m EG&G/EM met with DOE (W. Dixon) to discuss the Technical Review Boardmeetings scheduled for March.
* Preparation continued of the annual report of work accomplished in 1993 for theBiological Resource Monitoring Program.
* Abstracts of presentations being prepared for the 1994 Desert Tortoise CouncilSymposium were approved by DOE

WORK PROGRESS
* EG&G/EM conducted one preactivity survey to assess potential impacts onbiological resources from the proposed extension of the North Portal Pad.Reclamation inventories were conducted at two sites. Three biological resourcesurvey and one reclamation inventory reports were submitted to Project Office. Two resurveys for tortoises were conducted. One casual access survey wasconducted.
* Continued locating desert tortoises once weekly. At the end of the December alltortoises had entered hibernation. Abstracts to be considered for presentation atthe 1994 Desert Tortoise Council Symposium were submitted to DOE for reviewand approval. Conducted raven population monitoring surveys.
* EG&G/EM met with DOE (W. Dixon) to discuss proposed changes in the SiteCharacterization Effects Studies for the Biological Resources MonitoringProgram. The changes were proposed after evaluating existing data and inputreceived during the Technical Review Board evaluation of the TerrestrialEcosystems Program in November.
* Preparation continued of the annual report of work accomplished in 1993 for theBiological Resource Monitoring Program.
* The annual report for the renewal of EG&G/EMs State of Nevada animalhandling permit was submitted. A new permit for 1994 is expected in January.
* The Topsoil Quality and Soil Amendment Study was implemented at ReclamationTrial Site #1 on the north end of Yucca Mountain. One hundred-sixty plots withcombinations of soil type (native vs. imported) and soil amendments (organicmatter, polyacrylamide gel and fertilizer) were established at the site.
