    Scope

These instructions cover the basicoperating steps to be followed when using avariety of pressure vessels manufactured bythe Parr Instrument Company. They includetemperature and pressure ratings for Series4600 and 4700 General Purpose PressureVessels, also instructions for the gage blockassemblies commonly used with thesevessels. This material is intended to beused in conjunction with several relatedinstruction sheets listed on page 2 coveringsafety precautions and other informationapplicable to Parr pressure equipment. Theuser should study all of these instructionscarefully before starting to use any Parrpressure vessels in order to obtain acomplete understanding of the capabilitiesand limitations of these vessels, and to bewell aware of the precautions to beobserved in their operation. Users Responsibility

All Parr Reactors and pressurevessels are designed and manufactured withgreat care to assure safe operation whenused within their prescribed temperature andpressure limits. But . . . the basic responsibility for safetywhen using this equipment rests entirelywith the user; who must:1. Select a reactor or pressure vessel

which has the capability, pressure rating, corrosion resistance and design featuresthat are suitable for its intended use.Parr engineers will be glad to discussavailable equipment and material optionswith prospective users, but the finalresponsibility for selecting a reactor orpressure vessel that will perform to theusers satisfaction in any particularreaction or test must rest with the user not with Parr.

In exercising the responsibility for theselection of pressure equipment, theprospective user is often faced with achoice between over or under-designed

equipment. The hazards introduced byunder-designed pressure vessels arereadily apparent, but the penalties thatmust be paid for over-designedapparatus are often overlooked .Recognizing these criteria, Parr reactorsand pressure vessels are offered inseveral different styles, each designedfor convenient use in daily operationwithin certain temperature and pressurelimits, using gaskets, closures and otherelements carefully selected for safeoperation within the limits specified forthat design. But in order to preserve thevalidity of these designs, all temperatureand pressure limits must be observed, and no attempt should be made toincrease these limits by makingalterations or by substituting componentswhich are not recommended by ParrInstrument Company.

    2. Install and operate the equipment withina suitable barricade, if required, withappropriate safety accessories and in fullcompliance with local safety codes andrules.

    3. Establish training procedures toensure that any person handling theequipment knows how to use it properly.

    4. Maintain the equipment in goodcondition and establish procedures forperiodic testing to be sure the vesselremains structurally sound.

Unpack CarefullyUnpack the equipment carefully and

check all parts against the packing list. Ifshipping damage is discovered, report itimmediately to the delivering carrier. Thevessel, heater and temperature controllermay be packed separately for conveniencein shipping, but these parts are easilyreassembled. Examine the vessel closelyfor any loose parts or shipping damage andbe sure to check all wrappings and packingmaterials thoroughly so as not to overlookany parts which might otherwise bediscarded.

    Pressure and Temperature Limits

The working pressure andtemperature for these vessels must notexceed the maximum limits established foreach design and listed in the Working Limitsand Parts List section of these instructions.

Limits for vessels made of othermaterials and for other operatingtemperatures can be determined asdescribed in Instruction Sheet No. 230M.No attempt should be made to increasethese limits by making alterations or bysubstituting components which are notrecommended by Parr Instrument Company. It must be understood that lower pressureand temperature limits may be required formodified reactors and for vessels made ofspecial alloys not listed in Instruction SheetNo. 230M. Limits for such vessels will bedetermined by the physical characteristics ofthe material of construction and will beprescribed on an individual basis.

The maximum working pressure andtemperature for any vessel is governed bythe design of the vessel and the strength ofthe material from which it is constructed. There is also a close relationship betweenworking pressure and temperature since thestrength of any material will normally fall offas the temperature is increased.

Temperature and pressure limits arealso affected by the physical properties andtemperature limits of the gaskets and sealsused in the vessel, and by any valves, gages or other fittings attached to thevessel. Obviously, the safe operatingpressure of any system can be no higherthan that of its lowest rated component.

    Split Ring Closures

Most Parr pressure vessels areequipped with a unique split ring coverclamp in which the head of the vessel isclamped to the cylinder by a hardened steelring which has been split into two sections. These sections slide into place from thesides without interfering with any fittingsattached to the head.

The closing force is developed bysimply tightening a set of compression boltsin the ring sections with a hand wrench. Asa further convenience, larger Parr vessels inone and two gallon sizes, and certain hightemperature and high pressure vessels, areequipped with split ring closures which donot require an outer retaining ring or dropband. This allows the vessel to be openedand closed by simply sliding the split ringsection into place from the sides andtightening the compression bolts while thecylinder remains in place in its heater orother fixed support.

    Split Ring Closure Operations

All vessels with split ring closures, except the larger Series 4660, 4670 and4680 sizes, must be removed from theheater and set on a bench or table topbefore attempting to remove the split ringsand head.

    1. To Open The Vessel: open the gasrelease valve to discharge any internalpressure; then loosen the compressionbolts in the split ring sections. Loosenthe cone pointed screw in the outer bandand lower the band to rest on the table. The ring sections can now be removed, and the head with all attached fittings isfree to be lifted from the cylinder.

    2. Before Closing The Vessel, examine thehead seal carefully to be sure that it is ingood condition. The seal should nothave any nicks or be hardened, discolored, or deformed. Examine themating surfaces on the cylinder and headto be sure they are clean and free fromburrs; then set the head on the cylinder.

    3. To Close The Vessel, put the two splitring halves around the head and cylinderflanges, fasten the latches or tighten thebolts as assembled before.

    4. Routinely inspect the bolts on split ringclosures for lubrication and cleanliness. These screws should not be allowed todry because the threads will seize.Regularly apply Parr High TemperatureAnti-Seize Lubricant before this happens.

    Self-Sealing O-Ring Closure

The self-sealing design features anO-ring retained in a groove on the vesselhead. This design is self sealing and thesplit ring does not require or have thecompression bolts used with the flat gasket.4761 300 mL Vessel with Split Ring

    Screw Cap Closures

On the smallest Parr vessels athreaded sleeve and screw cap are used toclamp the head to a cup. This is a uniontype coupling in which proper alignmentbetween the head and cup is alwaysassured since neither of these parts rotateswhen the screw cap is tightened. The flatgasket is held in a recess in the head. Theseal is made as the lip of the cup iscompressed against the gasket throughtightening the screw cap and sleeve. Allcomponents must be kept clean. Thegasket must be replaced whenever itbecomes worn or damaged. Any nicks ingasket recess area or to the sealing face ofthe cup must be avoided. Operating 4700 Screw Cap Vessels

To close the Series 4700 Screw CapVessels: raise the sleeve against the top rimof the cup; set the cover on the cup andattach the screw cap. Turn the screw capdown until it is finger tight; then set thevessel in a Parr A22AC3 bench socket andtighten the cap firmly with a 21AC4 boxwrench.

    Parr Pressure Vessel Seals

Several different cover sealingarrangements are used in Parr PressureVessels, each selected for easy access tothe interior of the vessel as well as for safeoperation within the pressure andtemperature limits for which the vessel isdesigned. Both flat compression typegaskets and O-rings are used in thesedesigns.

The various gasket materials used inParr pressure vessels are listed in Table I.Since several of these materials areproduced by different suppliers underdifferent trade names, the ASTM genericdesignation is used in these instructions toidentify the type of sealing material (ormaterials) recommended for each Parrvessel. Contained Flat Gaskets

Contained Flat Gaskets are used invessels for moderate pressure underconditions in which the gasket material willretain its physical form up to the maximumtemperature for which the vessel andclosure are designed. This type of closurerequires a ring of compression screws or ascrew cap to preload the gasket with a forcegreater than the highest pressure to bedeveloped within the vessel. If the internalpressure should exceed the gasket loading, the vessel will leak. O-Rings

O-Rings made of an elastomericmaterial and held in an o-ring grooveprovide a convenient sealing arrangementfor various Parr vessels. This type of sealdoes not require preloading from a ring ofcompression screws since the requiredsealing force develops from pressure withinthe vessel and increases automatically asthe internal pressure is raised.

Seals for Operating Temperaturesup to 350 C

Parr uses both flat contained gasketsand O-rings made of different materials, each with a different maximum workingtemperature. Flat gaskets made of PTFEfluoropolymer resins are the recommendedchoice for many applications since PTFEmaterials are inert to most chemicals. PTFEgaskets will provide good seals underrepeated opening and closing of the vessel ifthe gasket temperature does not exceed350C.

O-rings are available in severaldifferent materials for use within thetemperature limit listed in the following table.

    Pressure and Temperature LimitsO-Ring Material Maximum Temp.NBR 150 CFKM 225 CFFKM 275 CPTFE 350 C

Gaskets for OperatingTemperatures above 350 C

Parr uses a flexible form of graphitewhich has proven to be an excellent hightemperature sealing material. It has almostunlimited temperature range, retaining itsstructure at temperatures well above themaximum at which a metal gasket canoperate, and offering broad corrosionresistance as well.

Metal Gaskets can be furnished ifrequired for special applications. These areusually made of stainless steel machined toa unique diamond shape with edges whichfit into supporting grooves in the head andcylinder of the vessel. This type of gasketrequires careful maintenance and a uniformloading applied by tightening a ring ofcompression bolts with a torque wrench. For easier handling, Parr has replaced itsdiamond shaped metal gaskets with flat, flexible graphite gaskets (FG) describedabove. But it will continue to furnish metalgaskets in custom vessels for applications inwhich a metal gasket appears to offer thebest solution to a difficult sealing problem.

    Sealing The Vessel

Vessels with split ring closures aresealed by tightening the compression boltsin the split ring sections with a wrenchfurnished with the apparatus. To ensureuniform loading, turn down each bolt fingertight, then tighten to the limit describedbelow for the type of gasket being used. Donot over-tighten the compression bolts asthis can generate excessive strain on theclosure.

Vessels with a Flat PTFE Gasket.Tighten the compression bolts using a criss-cross pattern, applying a firm but hard pull toeach screw. Use a torque wrench to apply25 ft-lbs to each compression bolt. Let thevessel stand for about five minutes after theinitial tightening, then tighten again to 25-ftlbs. This will compensate for any tendencyof the PTFE gasket to flow under the loadingpressure.

Vessels with an O-ring seal. The self-sealing design features an O-ring retained ina groove on the vessel head. This design isself sealing and the split ring does notrequire or have the compression bolts usedwith the flat gasket.

Vessels with a Flexible GraphiteGasket. A torque wrench should be used totighten the compression bolts on vesselsequipped with a flexible graphite gasket.Since both 6-point and 12 point bolts areused on various Parr high pressure vessels, the user must be sure that the torquewrench is fitted with an adapter whichmatches the bolts on which it will be used.

To ensure uniform loading, clamp thecylinder in a vise service fixture or attach ananti-rotation clamp; inspect the gasket andset the head in place. Slide the split ringsections into position, turn each of thecompression bolts finger-tight, then applythe sealing force with a torque wrench in thefollowing manner:

Pick a starting bolt and tighten it toapproximately 15 ft-lbs. Then by-pass theadjacent bolts and move around the closureto a bolt approximately 180 degrees fromthe start. Torque the second bolt andcontinue in the same pattern until all aresnug at 20 ft-lbs. Then repeat theprocedure, increasing the torque to therequired limit shown in the table below.

It may be possible to extend theuseful life of a flexible graphite gasket bycoating the sealing surfaces on both thevessel and the gasket with a silicone-baselubricant. The user may also want to roughup the sealing surface on the cylinder with a300 grit abrasive paper to ensure that thegasket will remain in the head groove andwill not stick to the cylinder.

Vessels with a Metal Gasket.Pressure vessels with a metal gasketrequire a uniform loading on the gasketcarefully applied by tightening a ring ofcompression bolts with a torque wrench. The amount of torque to be applied will varywith different vessels and with the intendedmaximum working pressure. Specificsealing instructions will be provided for anyParr pressure vessels with a metal gasketfurnished on special order.

    Sealing 4740 High PressureVessels

Closing operations for the 1.0 inchI.D., Series 4740 high pressure vessels aresimilar to those described for larger vesselswith flexible graphite gaskets, except on the4740 Series the compression screws arecarried in a screw cap instead of in a splitring. When closing a 4740, clamp thecylinder in a vise; check the graphite gasketto be sure that it fits properly in the headgroove; set the head on the cylinder and addthe compression ring. Check the screw capto be sure that the six screws have beenturned back so that they do not projectthrough the cap, then screw the cap onto thecylinder. Turn it down as far as it will go,then back it off about 1/8 turn. Now, tightenthe screws with a torque wrench with aninitial10 ft-lbs using the criss-cross patterndescribed for larger vessels. After all havebeen tightened to 10 ft-lbs, repeat theprocedure, increasing the torque until allhave been tightened to the recommended15 ft-lb limit. Gage Block Assemblies

Parr gage block assemblies combinethe function of an inlet valve, a pressuregage and a safety rupture disc in a compactassembly on a block which can be attachedto the head of a pressure vessel with asingle connecting tube. There is a threadedsocket in the block for a gas connection witha pressure hose or tubing using a Type Aconed pressure fitting. Coned pressurefittings are also used on the tube whichconnects the block to the pressure vessel. The valve in this assembly controls the flowof gas into the vessel and the gage showsthe internal pressure when the valve isclosed. Two styles are offered: The 4316gage block assembly has a 3-1/2 dia.pressure gage and a Type A socketconnector. This unit is normally used onsmaller vessels where space is limited.

The 4317 gage block assembly hasa 4-1/2 dia. gage and a Type B connector. It is typically furnished on vessels one literand larger.

    Pressure Gages

Pressure gages display in both psiand bar in various ranges for use on Parrgage block assemblies. The availableranges are shown in the gage block partslist. All of these gages have stainless steelcases with T316SS Bourdon tubes and NPT male connections. Gages constructedof Alloy 400 are available on special order. Safety Rupture Discs

Detailed instructions for the safetyrupture disc installed in Parr gage blocksand heads are provided in a separateInstruction Sheet No. 231M. The usershould review these instructions carefully. Please note that the operating pressures inthe vessel should not exceed 70% of therange of the pressure gage and rupture disc. Also note the warning that the dischargeport from the rupture disc must always bedirected away from all operating personnel.A compression fitting for use with 3/8 O.D.tubing is attached to the rupture disc body.It is recommended that tubing be attached tothis connector to carry any discharge to afume hood or safe area in the event of anover-pressure. The free or discharge end ofany attached tubing must be anchoredsecurely.

    Coned Pressure Fittings

The coned pressure fittings used toconnect gage blocks, pressure hoses andother detachable parts to Parr pressurevessels are illustrated below. These fittingshave a sleeve with a left-handed threadwhich screws onto the end of a thick-walledtube plus a compression nut to complete theassembly. When screwed into a matchingsocket, these parts form a rigid jointwhich will remain tight over a widetemperature and pressure range, yet thejoint can be made and broken repeatedlywithout destroying the sealing faces. Nogasket is required.

When using these coned connectors, screw the sleeve onto the tube as far as itwill go; then insert the end of the tube intothe head or gage block and tighten thecompression nut firmly while holding theblock stationary with the gage facing in thedesired direction. Note that this assemblybehaves like a pipe union, allowing theconnecting tube or hose to remain stationarywhile the joint is tightened.

Note: PTFE tape is not required on theseconnectors.

    Tapered Pipe Threads

The pressure gage, needle valvesand other fixed attachments on Parr vesselheads have tapered pipe threads which arenot to be disturbed after they have beenscrewed into place. If it becomes necessaryto remove any of these fittings, the pipethreads must be coated with PTFE tape, flexible graphite tape, or similar lutingmaterial on reassembly.

    General Maintenance Notes

    1. Periodically inspect all electrical wiringand pressure connections for excessivecorrosion. Suspect parts should bereplaced by components only suppliedby Parr Instrument Company.

    2. Always use appropriate wrenches on allfittings and valves. Never use pliers orpipe wrenches.

    3. Head and cylinder service fixtures areavailable for convenience and protectionof components during maintenance ofyour reactor.

    4. A light coating of thread lubricant, suchas Parr High Temperature Anti-SeizeLubricant, (424HC2) should be applied tothe straight threads of coned pressureconnections as well as to the nose of themating piece this will help to obtain atight joint.

Note: PTFE tape should be used onlyon all tapered (NPT) threads not NPSstraight threads.

    5. NPT (National Pipe Taper) threadsshould not be disassembled any morethan necessary. It will becomeincreasingly difficult to maintain a tightseal with these tapered threads if thejoint is made and broken repeatedly.

    6. Do not use oil or anti-seize lubricant onthreads or fittings if the vessel is to beused with oxygen.

    7. If your vessel is equipped with a loosecompression ring be sure that it is inplace on the head before attaching anyhead fittings. The compression ringcannot be installed after fittings havebeen screwed into the head.

    8. Clean all threads and gas passagesthoroughly and remove all tapefragments when overhauling a vessel. An ultrasonic bath is excellent forcleaning metal parts, but do not place athermocouple probe, pressure gage, faceseals or ball bearings in an ultrasonicbath. Periodic cleaning may beperformed on the exterior surfaces of thereactor stand with a damp cloth. Allpower should be disconnected whencleaning.

    9. Routinely inspect the bolts on split ringclosures for lubrication and cleanliness. These screws should not be allowed todry because the threads will seize.Regularly apply Parr High TemperatureAnti-Seize Lubricant before this happens. It is important to keep the bolts lubricatedso they will not seize and also to achievethe intended torque value.

    10. Routinely inspect screw cap threads forwear and cleanliness.

    Periodic Pressure Tests

All cylinders used in Parr pressurevessels are tested under hydrostaticpressure to 1.3 times their maximum ratingbefore they are released from the factory.Micrometer caliper measurements are takenduring this test to check the deflection of thewalls and bottom of the cylinder underpressure. Excessive deflection or failure ofthe metal to resume its original dimensionsafter pressure is released indicates that acylinder is potentially unsafe and it will berejected. Similar tests should be made atregular intervals during the life of eachcylinder, particularly whenever the usersuspects that his equipment has beenoverstressed or damaged.

Some laboratories maintain hydraulictest facilities and make it a rule that allpressure vessels must be tested at regularintervals. Records are kept of deflections atspecific test pressures so that any increasein deflection becomes a warning that themetal has lost strength. Any cylinder whichfails to return to its original dimensions afterapplication of the prescribed hydrostatictests should be discarded as unsafe forfurther use.

Users who do not have pressure testfacilities can return any Parr pressure vesselto the factory for hydrostatic testing andoverhaul. This should be done wheneverthe metal shows excessive damage fromcorrosion or whenever an over-pressure orother unusual occurrence raises any safetyquestions. Please call Parr for a returnauthorization number for any repair work.Apparatus returned for testing and overhaulshould be shipped prepaid to the ParrInstrument Company, 211-53rd Street,Moline, Illinois 61265. An order or letter ofinstructions should be mailed to the sameaddress, as no repair work will be startedwithout specific instructions.
