Parkwood Green’s value for Term 4: CARING
Congratulations and well done to all our little athletes
who ran, jumped and threw objects all day at their
carnivals last term. All their efforts were rewarded with
valuable house points to go towards the house shield
which will be presented at assembly in Term 4.
Congratulations to all the award winners for their
individual efforts on the day and we look forward to
seeing our future stars representing Parkwood Green PS
at the District Athletics in the near future.

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Term 4 has started well with all students returning to
school ready for the last term of learning and playing
with their friends.
I was speaking with a parent yesterday and we were
reflecting on how fast this year has gone! Before we
know it, we will be in holiday mode and getting ready
to share time with family and friends. HOWEVER, before
we race ahead let us remember that we have an
important term of learning to focus on!
IMPORTANCE OF PLAY AND ACTIVITY IN
LEARNING
Recently there was an interesting article on the
importance of play and activity in improving learning
for students. Finland has a high level of student
achievement compared to other countries. There are a
number of reasons why this occurs, one of the factors is
play (unstructured and frequent play) with a variety of
friends. The play is spaced throughout their day of
learning and at times it is as short as 10 minutes. As
educators, we have always known that a healthy body
makes a healthy mind, and have put into our practice,
breaks between learning tasks. I mention the
importance of play in learning because sometimes we
forget and we focus on other things in our busy lives. I
am sure you can find this article online if you have any
further interest in reading it.
ENROLMENTS FOR 2020
We have our Foundation parent information evening
on Wednesday October 23rd. It will be wonderful to
meet all of our new families. It is recommended that
you attend even if you have siblings at PGPS so that
you stay informed about any changes that have
occurred since your last child started. If you have not
enrolled your child yet please do so this week as we
have begun our planning and don’t want anyone to
miss out on important information.
UPCOMING CURRICULUM DAY
Our next curriculum day is scheduled for Monday the 4th
November. This is a pupil free day and is the day before
Melbourne Cup day. We always choose to have one
on this day as it allows parents who get the day off to
have a very long weekend and means children don’t
miss a day of learning.
Big Childcare will be running a full day program for
those families who need it. Please ensure that you book
early so they can arrange for the appropriate number
of staff.
UNIFORM
Just a reminder that hats are required for Term 4.
Unfortunately baseball caps of any description are not
part of our uniform. These hats are best kept for the
weekend. The summer dress is available, and unless
there are religious reasons for covering of legs, black or
blue leggings are not to be worn under the dress.
Basketball bloomers or black shorts are to be worn
under the dress. I mention again that SKORTS and
NETBALL SKIRTS are not part of our uniform. Last year we
allowed the year 6 students to wear these as a
transition to the new uniform items. In 2019 these are
not part of the uniform. Our uniform is looking very
smart and fresh with many families purchasing the new
additions. I also have noticed that jackets other than
school jackets have begun to creep back into the
school. These are not to be worn at any time during the
school day, and any children wearing one will be
asked to remove it. On cold days children will be
supplied with a jacket from the second hand uniform
shop that they can wear for the day.
SCHOOL SPORTS VICTORIA - GOLF
On Monday 14th October, Lukas from 6KL went to
Mount Derrimut Golf Course and represented
Parkwood Green PS in the 2019 Victorian Junior Golf
Tournament. He started on the sixth hole and played
with two other children who ended up qualifying onto
the next round along with him.
On Wednesday 13th November, Lukas will represent the
school again at the Medway Regional Finals. Good
luck Lukas!
GRADE 6 INTERSCHOOL SPORT
Well done to all of our interschool sports teams in
Season 2 (Summer) sport in what was an incredible
effort. 7 out of the possible 11 teams won the district
competitions.
Congratulations to the following teams who made it
into the finals; Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Boys
Cricket, Boys Softball, Girls Softball, Boys Volleyball A
and Girls Tennis. We wish all of these teams best of luck
in the finals!
We also would like to acknowledge the enormous
effort put in by our other teams. Our Boys tennis team
finished as runners up, the Boys Volleyball B and Girls
Volleyball both finished 3rd whilst our Girls Cricket team
placed in the top four.

most of the games but
really enjoyed the day.
Thankyou to all the parents and staff for their hard work
and dedication in coaching these teams.
DIVISION ATHLETICS
Parkwood Green had 17 students compete at the Keilor
Division Athletics finals. All the students competed
strongly and with great sportsmanship. We now wish Toby
P, Jordan M, Charlotte M and Annabelle T all the best as
they have made their way through to the Western
Metropolitan Region Finals and compete early in Term 4.
GRADE 4 BIKE ED
Term 4 sees the Grade 4’s start their Bike Ed program
during their Physical Education classes. Students will learn;
to ride a bike safely, simple bike maintenance, how to
ride in groups and learn simple road rules to help them
become responsible road users. The program will run for
the majority of Term 4 with an intensive program at the
end. Students will be required to bring their own bike to
school on the days they have Physical Education. The
school can provide secure storage of these bikes if they
cannot be taken home each week. Students will be
expected to have their own helmets as well. It is a
valuable course for the students which prepares them for
Grade 5 camp and other important life skills.
LIBRARY MURAL
Have you seen our library mural yet?
If not, be sure to head to the BER and have a look. It is a
beautiful new addition to our Library.
