Park Center has been the recipient of a federal grant to implement the Global Studies and Diploma Programme here.

The requirement in the grant is for every licensed staff member to have 90 hrs. of training every year- about 45 are covered by staff meetings, PLC, and building staff development days during the school year.


The other 45 hours can be made up of: MYP/DP training in or out of state Technology integration/TIES

opportunities Training in our school during the

summer (June, July and August)


The following staff development opportunities this summer will be paid

1. June 9/10 training (highly encouraged for all staff)

2. July curriculum writing opportunities

3. August 19/20 training (highly encouraged for all staff)


We will be sending you by tomorrow a link to a Zoomerang survey about your previous training and knowledge of:

1. IB

2. MYP

3. DP

4. Technology use and integration

5. Understanding by Design


● We will also send by next week a survey with options and choices for this summer trainings● Some of the training being considered are:

1. Magnet 101

2. UbD – Understanding by Design

3. MYP Principles and Philosophy

4. MYP Unit and Assessment Design

5. International Mindedness


What an MYP Classroom Should Look Like

Form a small group You will receive one of twelve components of an MYP

Classroom You group will present this element. Some ideas:

1. What does this element look like in your classroom?

2. Does this element apply to you?3. Is it something new to you or it is already

integrated in your classroom?4. What more do you need to know about it?



A mirror of the IBO mission statement and IB learner profile.• The IBO classroom is a kind, accepting, positive, place of

continuous learning for every student .



Evidence of unit questions

• Questions or statements will be posted in the classroom to provide a larger purpose for learning targeted content and make students aware of the specific skills they will learn.



Evidence of formative and summative assessment• Formative assessment is done during instruction so teachers

can make instructional decisions based on student readiness and needs.

• Summative assessment is done after instruction to provide information on the impact of instruction.



Opportunities for students to practice critical thinking

Teachers will present focused questions or tasks that invite critical student reflection about the content of the curriculum using tools students have learned over time.



Use of technology where appropriate

Teachers will incorporate technology which enables students to identify, access, evaluate and acknowledge a wide range of information sources; including the use of the MYP design cycle.



Inter-disciplinary focus where appropriate

Holistic learning breaks down artificial barriers of different subjects commonly found in school, enabling students to discover the relationships between different knowledge areas and the real world.



Evidence of Areas of Interaction integration

The five areas: • approaches to learning (ATL)• community and service• homo faber • environment• health and social education

…will be used as “lenses” through which the teacher will present information and encourage student reflection on the issues at hand. The Areas of Interaction will enhance the interdisciplinary connection.



Student Centered

A broad teaching approach that encompasses: • replacing lecture with active learning• integrating self-paced learning programs and/or cooperative

group situations• holding the student responsible for his/her own advances in

education.



Evidence of International mindedness

Developing students’ attitudes, knowledge and skills as they learn about their own and others’ cultures (global perspective).



Criterion referenced assessment/rubrics

Every subject has specific criteria to be used when creating rubrics for assessment. The criteria are directly from the aims and objectives for each particular subject.



Interactive

Students participate as equal partners in an ongoing discovery process. They are interactive with anyone else in a constructive way.



Lessons planned with the end in mind

Lessons are “back mapped” to emphasize the end point.
