Jesus is Lord!
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This is the weekend of our second annual Saint Mary Fall Country Fair! There is still plenty of time today to stop by and enjoy the fun, food and fellowship of the Country Fair. There are lots of rides, square dancing, entertainment, and vendors for everyone to feel “a little bit country” this weekend. Please remember to drop off your Super 50/50 tickets at the Fair if you haven’t already. The Fair closes at 6 PM today (Sunday.) A BIG thank you to Hank Pekarsky who is chairman of the Fair and who tirelessly volunteers and serves our parish community. Hank is a great blessing to us!
Next Sunday is the official Life Teen “Kick-Off” for the new semester beginning at the 5 PM Life Teen Mass. As a Eucharist-centered movement within the Roman Catholic Church, Life Teen leads teenagers and their families into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. With the Blessed Virgin Mary as our intercessor and guide, Life Teen seeks to unleash the fullness of the Sacramental power present within the young Church. Saint Mary’s Life Teen is part of a world-wide movement of youth. Life Teen can be found in 31 countries, including Canada, South Africa, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, East Africa, Uganda, Germany, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, England, and the Netherlands. We are so blessed to begin our sixth year of Life Teen here at Saint Mary’s.
EDGE, the Life Teen middle school youth ministry program will kick off on Tuesday, October 15th. EDGE provides a safe fun place for youth to find solid Catholic community, to get answers to their questions about faith, and, most importantly, to experience Jesus in a profound and personal way.
Both Life Teen and EDGE are always in need of volunteers to help out with various ministries and activities. For example, every Sunday we provide dinner for our teens after the Life Teen Mass. Parishioners have generously been providing these meals. It would be a big help if additional parishioners would be able to provide a meal for one of the Sundays. There are so many ways you can help with our dynamic youth ministry program. Please contact John Watchorn or Cassandra Abbud at the parish office to inquire on how you can help.
Last Saturday our parish began a new semester of - That MAN is YOU! (TMIY!) I want to honor all the men of our parish who are participating in this program and encourage more of our brothers to “come and see” what TMIY! is all about. TMIY! meets every Saturday morning at 6:30 am to 8:00 am in the Saint Mary School Cafeteria. I also want to encourage all our sisters in Christ to “check out” the Women’s Discipleship Group on Monday evenings at 7:30 pm in the Bulman Center. At Saint Mary’s, we have something for everyone! Praise God!
Have a blessed week!
In Jesus and Mary,
Father Jeff Kegley Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning!
Today’s Gospel (Luke 15:1-32) begins with some who criticize Jesus, seeing Him in the company of tax collectors and sinners, and that say with disdain: “This man receives sinners and eats with them” (v. 2). This phrase reveals itself in reality as a wonderful
proclamation. Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them. It’s what happens to us in every Mass, in every church: Jesus is happy to receive us at His table, where He offers Himself for us. It’s the phrase we could write on the doors of our churches: “Jesus welcomes sinners here and invites them to His table.” And, the Lord, answering those that were criticizing Him, tells them three wonderful parables, which show His predilection for those that feel far from Him. It would be good today if each one of you took up the Gospel, Luke’s Gospel, chapter 15, and read the three parables. They are wonderful.
In the first, He says: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost?” (v. 4). Which of you? Not a person of good sense: who does two calculations and sacrifices one to maintain the ninety-nine. God, instead, doesn’t resign Himself, in fact He has you at heart, who still don’t know the beauty of His love; you who have not yet welcomed Jesus at the center of your life; you who don’t succeed in overcoming your sin; you who perhaps because of the awful things that have happened in your life don’t believe in love. In the second parable, you are that small coin that the Lord is not resigned to lose and looks for without respite: He wants to tell you that you are precious in His eyes, that you are unique. No one can substitute you in God’s heart. You have a place, it’s yours, and no one can substitute you, and I too — no one can substitute me in God’s heart. And, in the third parable God is the father who waits for the return of the prodigal son: God always waits for us; He doesn’t tire; He doesn’t lose heart, so that we are, each one of us, that son embraced again, that coin found again, that sheep caressed and laid on His shoulders. Every day He waits for us to become aware of His love. And you say: “But I have been so mischievous, I have been too bad!” Don’t be afraid: God loves you; He loves you as you are and He knows that only His love can change your life.
However, this infinite love of God for us sinners, which is the heart of the Gospel, can be refused. It’s what the elder son does of the parable. He doesn’t understand love at that moment and has in mind more of a boss than a father. It’s a risk for us also: to believe in a more rigorous than merciful god, a god that defeats evil with power rather than forgiveness. It’s not so, God saves with love, not with force, proposing Himself, not imposing Himself. However, the elder son, who doesn’t accept the father’s mercy, closes himself, makes a worse mistake: he presumes himself just, he presumes himself betrayed and judges everything on the basis of his thought of justice. So he gets angry with his brother and rebukes his father: “You have killed the fatted calf when this son of yours came” (Cf. v. 30. This son of yours: he doesn’t call him my brother but your son. He feels himself the only son. We are also mistaken when we believe ourselves to be just when we think that the others are the evil ones. Let us not believe ourselves good, because on our own, without the help of God who is good, we are unable to overcome evil. Today, don’t forget to take the Bible and to read the three parables of Luke, chapter 15. It will do you good; it will be healthy for you.
How is evil defeated? It is defeated by receiving God’s forgiveness and the forgiveness of brothers. This happens every time we go to Confession: we receive the love of God there, which overcomes our sin: it isn’t any longer; God forgets it. When God forgives, He loses His memory, He forgets our sins, He forgets. God is so good with us! Not like us who, after having said: “it doesn’t matter,” at the first occasion we remember with interest the wrongs suffered. No, God cancels evil; He makes us new inside and thus makes joy be reborn in us, not sadness, not darkness in the heart, not suspicion but joy.
Brothers and sisters, courage, with God no sin has the last word. May Our Lady, who unties the knots of life free us from the pretension of believing we are just and make us feel the need to go to the Lord, who waits for us always to embrace us, to forgive us.
Pope Francis: God forgets our sins after confession

RIGHT TO LIFE
Do not use your freedom as a means to cover up wrong doing...1 Pet 2:16
The public debate should not be whether the Bishops will allow politicians to receive Communion, but whether politicians will allow children to be aborted. When we read the descriptions of what the abortion procedure does to little babies, we understand the core question is not whether these politicians are good Catholics, but whether
they are decent human beings.
Prayer: Lord, I pray today for every leader, politician and person who remains blind to the evil of abortion.
All meetings will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Saint Mary Grammar School cafeteria, located at 538 Church Street, Middletown, N.J. 07748. The Council will have information and social activities for the whole family. We hope we will help the families that may need assistance to alleviate and solve the everyday and extraneous problems of having a special needs person in the family household. Please reach out to anyone who you think could use some help! For

Our Preschool programs are an exciting introduction to school for little ones! Our little schoolhouse is a special part of our campus with a loving, experienced staff of qualified teachers and aides in a low teacher-student ratio. We offer a fun-filled, faith-based curriculum as the first steps in a catholic education for little ones. Through hands-on learning and play, we provide opportunities for each child to grow socially, spiritually and creatively.
For the preschooler beginning the learning experience is a big transition. Saint Mary Preschool provides young learners and their families several options in age appropriate programs as they progress the preschool experience.

State of the Parish
The following is an update on the condition of the parish. St. Mary’s parish has a rich tradition of
providing many programs and services to the parishioners and community. We are fortunate to have
a beautiful campus that houses two schools, two preschools, a chapel and church. A campus of this
size requires constant upkeep, and has been evident over the past two years, sometimes
emergency repairs. The inside of our historical Chapel had many renovations that were completed
by devoted volunteers. We saved over $90,000 because of their dedication and commitment.
However, it became necessary to hire professional contractors to replace the leaking Chapel roof,
pave the parking lot, and restore the exterior molding around our beloved stained-glass windows.
We are currently building a first-floor bathroom to meet the needs of our elderly and handicapped
parishioners that cannot navigate the stairs to the basement facility. Our Mary Mother of God
Church was not without its own issues. We recently replaced all the lights in the Church and in the
outside parking lot that had gone dark. Upon inspection, we were informed that one of the heating
units will require replacement very soon. There are also water leaks in the Church, and the parking
lot is in desperate need of repair.
Completed or in the process of being completed
Lights in Mary, Mother of God $72,865
MMGC & Chapel parking lot lighting $19,665
Chapel Parking lot Paving $74,858
Roof at the Chapel $29,925
Replacing molding at Chapel $84,300
Total $281,613
Estimates on needed repairs - future/present
Heating unit $28,000
Parking lot repairs main Church $80,000
Roof leak main Church $26,000
Bathroom at Chapel $12,000
Emergency repairs (based on last 3 years) $16,000
Total $162,000
Our weekly collections are not sufficient to cover these expenses nor were they used to pay for
completed repairs. We are offering parishioners an opportunity to ADOPT a PEW to pay for these
extraordinary repairs. The pew will be in either Mary, Mother of God Church or in the Chapel. You
will have the option of choosing the pew and its location. The cost is $1,000. You may pay by
installments and upon completion of the payment plan, the plate will be mounted on both ends of the
pew. Thank you for your generosity. God Bless You, Hank Pekarsky - Business Manager

I had a new 4th grade student stop in to my office on Tuesday, September 17th, waiting for the day to begin. I was meeting with Assistant Principal Dennis Poracky and Guidance Counselor Katie Anderson regarding the progress of new students thus far. What happened next is exactly why I love being the principal at Saint Mary School. Since we were discussing new students anyway, I asked Mia what she thought of being at Saint Mary School. Well, her response, as the commercial states, was “priceless”. Mia flashed a huge smile and began to tell us all the things she likes about being a Saint! They included the making a few new friends, coming to work with her father (Mia’s father teaches at SMS), how much she likes her classroom teacher, the cafeteria food is really good, etc. She then proceeded to tell us that she wants to be a pediatric cardiologist when she grows up. All the adults in the room looked at each other with an inquisitive look at this pronouncement. “Why do you want to be a pediatric cardiologist?” I asked Mia. She then went on to explain that she was born in China and had to have open heart surgery not long after she was born. She expressed her desire to help children like herself when she got older. So, in order to help make her dreams come true, we have been steadily upgrading our science program here at SMS. We have a relatively new science lab (built by the SMS Dad’s Club), a new middle school integrated science curriculum where the students will learn about all facets of science in grades 6-8, an Information Commons (almost finished) where students can do research, work on projects and perform STREAM activities, a garden where younger students will learn to grow vegetables and taste different foods while providing fresh produce to soup kitchens, and a new “Go Green” Club where students will learn about conservation and the environment. We here at SMS can’t take credit for Mia’s altruistic nature, nor her desire to help others. However, she fits in beautifully! It does the heart good to see a young girl so intent on improving the lives of others who’ve suffered greatly. Her whole demeanor spoke to her sincere concern for other children suffering from the same ailment. Upon further discussion, her reason for wanting to help these people came from a beautiful place of pure innocence. It was truly a blessing to start my day with this simple interaction. It reminded me that, sometimes, from the mouths of babes, come the greatest lessons. This is a simple, but clear example, of how we need to look at things sometimes. After all, we are called to have a “childlike faith” and come to the Lord as children! Please continue to pray for our school, its staff, students and families, and our clergy as we strive to provide an education that is unapologetically Catholic, family centered, caring to others and respectful to all. Please check our website, Facebook page and the Church bulletin for updates and upcoming events that you can enjoy with us. God bless, Craig Palmer Principal

It’s great day to be a Saint!
On September 11, 2019, the Saint Mary School staff and students
remembered the tragic events of 9/11/01 with a solemn prayer service,
intentions for all those impacted by the act of terrorism, the wearing of red,
white and blue clothing instead of school uniforms and a singing of God
Bless America at the school’s flagpole. With 147 Monmouth County
residents losing their lives on that day, and 39 from our parish, it was only
fitting not to let their memories fade from our consciousness. The entire
event was captured on film by one of our parents who works for WWOR-
TV9 and the story was shown that evening at 11:00 pm on Chasing News.
This is just another example of the values that are taught here at Saint
Mary School. We truly “Will Never Forget” and will always pray for peace
here at home and around the world! The link to the story is included here:
