From the Pastor’s Desk…

Today is Palm Sunday, the day which commemorates the Lord’s triumphant welcome into Jerusalem. Today marks the beginning of Holy Week. The Gospel for today’s Mass is lengthy, the scriptural account of the Passion of the Lord according to Mark. To better understand this narrative, it is useful to consider one single character or one single event of the larger story. That individual will forever stand out in your mind.

Consider the woman who appears at the home of Simon the Leper, the woman who breaks open an expensive jar of perfumed oil over the head of Jesus. What she does for Jesus – the normal welcoming wash before dinner – turns into an extraordinary act of generosity. In the view of some present, this was a complete waste. They maintain the oil could have been sold and the money used to feed the poor. This woman decides to welcome Jesus lavishly, while others who loathe Him, criticize her generosity. The other bystanders had failed to welcome Jesus so graciously or generously.

The Gospel of John tells us that no one shows greater love than to lay down one’s life for a friend. The Passion account relates how Jesus surrendered everything He had, even His very life, to demonstrate His love. He was ridiculed and rejected by the people He came to serve. Nonetheless, He demonstrates love to the end in an extraordinary act of generosity. In celebration of Holy Week or in celebration of Easter, initiate the lavish generosity demonstrated in today’s Gospel for someone else. We discover who we are when we give away in extraordinary measure, as did the woman, as did Jesus Christ for us.

Come to church during Holy Week,

Fr. Bill Arnold

Rice Bowls – Bring to Holy Thursday Mass: If you have adopted the Lenten Practice of fi lling a Rice Bowl as a sign of sacrifi ce and self-denial for the poor and hungry of the World, bring your Rice Bowl to the Mass of the Lord’s

Supper on Holy Thursday evening. There will be no regular Mass collection that evening. Baskets will be placed at the back of the Church to accept the Rice Bowls and then brought forward at offertory. The Rice bowls for St. Philip and Holy Spirit will be counted together.

The last opportunity for confession for anyone wishing to go to confession before Easter is Wednesday, March 28th, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit Church.

Palm Sunday: Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. Palm branches are a widely recognized symbol of peace and victory. The palms are blessed and many people will fashion them into small crosses or other items of personal devotion. Because the palms are blessed, they may not be discarded as trash. Instead, they are appropriately gathered at the church and incinerated to create the ashes that will be used in the following year’s Ash Wednesday observance.

Last Chance, Come Join Us: Be sure to call Marti at 614-237-1671, to register for the joint parish Holy Thursday Dinner,

March 29, beginning at 5:30. There is no cost. We need the count to be sure we have enough meals. Let us gather together to begin the Sacred Triduum with Mass following the dinner.

Help wanted: To get the church ready to celebrate Easter, we are looking for volunteers. Good Friday service will be held on Friday, March 30th at 2:00 p.m. We will begin our task following the service. With enough volunteers,

we hope this will take no more than 30 to 45 minutes. The more hands the better.

The Knights of Columbus is holding an Easter Egg Hunt following the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Easter Sunday at Holy Spirit Church. The egg hunt will be for all kids up to age 13. The hunt will be held on the baseball fi eld if the weather permits or in the church hall. Kids bring your baskets and come fi nd some eggs.

Easter Egg Hunt: Did you see him? The Easter Bunny is hiding his eggs. Sunday, March 25 (today), all are invited after 9:00 a.m. Mass. Come one, come all, and bring family and friends for the goodies. Coffee and donuts will be available to give you stamina for the hunt.

Shared Parish Events & Information

March is Developmental Disabilities Month. In 2017, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote:

“All persons with disabilities have gifts to contribute to the whole Church. When persons with disabilities are embraced and welcomed, and invited to participate fully in all aspects of the parish community life, the Body of Christ is more complete.”

Every person is created in the image and likeness of God. Do people with disabilities make you uncomfortable? Have you every really gotten to know an individual with disabilities of any kind? What should our reaction be when any person with disabilities is mocked or ridiculed, whether in private or in public? Think.

Proper Disposal of Old Palm Branches. Palms distributed each year on Palm Sunday are a sacramental, an item blessed by the Church for the spiritual benefi t of the faithful. They serve as a sacred reminder of the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem and His coming death on Good Friday.

Burning the palms in your fi replace is the ideal solution for disposal. Do not burn them with household garbage. Digging a small hole in the ground and burning them, or cutting the palms into small pieces and burying them in the ground, is another good option. In any case, do not throw out with the household trash or garbage, destined for the landfi ll.

Holy Week is the most sacred week on the Christian calendar, and Catholics in particular, hold the Sacred Triduum (TRID-OO-um), Latin for “three days” as commemoration of Christ’s redemptive passage through death, burial and Resurrection to new life. The Church observes the Triduum as a single event made up of three distinctive parts. In accordance with the custom in Biblical times, each “day” begins in the evening.

Next Sunday begins the fi fty-day celebration of the Easter Season. The importance of the Resurrection is refl ected in the length of the season. The Paschal Mystery is celebrated for seven Sundays, ending with the celebration of the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles.

Holy Week reminds us, however, that if we would rise with Him, we must fi rst die with Him. Please come to the celebrations of the three Sacred Days as a sign of your commitment to the Catholic Community of St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishes. Below is the list of liturgical events which will take place in our parishes this coming Holy Week:

Holy Thursday, March 29, all parishioners from Holy Spirit and St. Philip are invited to share a meal together at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall, and celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in church at 7:00 pm. At Mass, we commemorate the washing of the feet and the commitment to priestly service. After Mass, there is the procession to the Repository and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until midnight in the church.

Good Friday, March 30, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Philip and 7:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit is the solemn Celebration of the Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Passion according to John is proclaimed, the Holy Cross is venerated, and Holy Communion is distributed.

Holy Saturday, March 31, at 8:30 p.m. at Holy Spirit, we will celebrate the Easter Vigil, preceded by the beautiful once-a-year ceremonies of the Easter Night: The blessing of the New Fire, the lighting of the Easter Candle, Scripture readings narrating Salvation History, and the Baptism of new members into the Church.

Easter Sunday, April 1:

~ Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle~ Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit

Good Friday Holy Land Collection: Pope Francis has asked us to support the Pontifi cal Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on

Christians, and in these times of crisis, this collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to this collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. If you won’t be at the Good Friday service, put your gift in an envelope marked “Good Friday Collection”and drop it in the Sunday collection. Please be generous!

Produce Market – We have successfully completed our fi rst six Produce Markets and would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help in any way. The amount of help received was outstanding and resulted in our Markets running smoothly and successfully. We received many expressions of thanks from those we served. Thank you to our school lunch kitchen crew for providing coffee, hot water and cookies for our volunteers. Thank you also to our school staff members who scheduled student volunteers, who volunteered themselves, and to those school and PSR students who helped with setup and helped our clients take food to their cars. This was a very successful Holy Spirit Parish, St. Philip Parish and Holy Spirit School activity.

Some fun facts. Over the six months, we served an average of 176 families, representing 570 family members each month. Many were repeats from month to month, but there were 415 different families. We served families from 28 different zip codes. The majority (53%) were from 43213. 20% came from 43227 and 8% from 43232.

The Produce Markets will start up again in October and will again be on the second Thursday from October through March.

Spring Bible Study: 10-Scripture Passages Every Catholic Should Know. Pope Francis recently asked, “What would happen if we read the message of God contained in the Bible the way we read messages on our cellphones?” The Church encourages us to

make reading the Bible part of our daily lives. Reading these inspired words, we grow deeper in our relationship with God and come to understand our place in the community God has called us to be a part of. This study will explore 10 key scripture passages that can help Catholics understand and share our faith with others. If you are a veteran to Bible Studies or looking for a good place to start, join us! Our study will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights in the Holy Spirit Parish Conference Room through May 15th. For more information, please contact Mark Butler at 614-861-1521 or [email protected].
