WORKS OF MERCY: SPIRITUAL

The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works

of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-

being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to "help our neighbor in

their spiritual needs" (USCCA).

Suggestions for how you might incorporate the Spiritual Works of Mercy into your month in

observation of the Year of Mercy are listed below.

COUNSEL THE DOUBTFUL: Follow Christ with the witness of your life so that others may see God's love revealed in your actions. Accompany a friend who is struggling with believing to join a parish group for service or faith formation. INSTRUCT THE IGNORANT: Learn about our faith and be open to talking with others about our beliefs. There is always something more to discover about our faith. ADMONISHING THE SINNER: Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ. COMFORTING THE SORROWFUL: Lend a listening ear to those going through a tough time; make a home cooked meal for a friend going through a hard time. FORGIVING INJURIES: Let go of grudges; participate in the Sacrament of Penance; saying “sorry” transforms hearts and lives. BEARING ARMS PATIENTLY: Do not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit. PRAYING FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD: Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can support others. Joining together in prayer for the living and the dead entrusts us all into God's care; Keep your own book of prayer intentions, writing down the names of those who you are keeping in your prayers.

Conversion: Following the Call of Christ Adult Faith Sharing Experience Continued during Lent

Feb. 16, Feb, 23 and Mar. 1 from 7:15 PM – 9 PM

When you hear the word “Conversion,” what comes to mind? Catholicism defines “conversion” as a life-long process of turning one’s attention and energy toward an ever-deepening relationship with Christ. Join us as we continue the DVD-based program, Conversion: Following the Call of Christ, presented by Bishop Robert Barron during Lent. Using three stories from the Bible, Bishop Barron demonstrates how ordinary, sinful people like us are met by Jesus and called to a better life through him. Register online or contact Jan at [email protected] or ext 253.

On Feb. 2, 2016 we will celebrate the 7th Anniversary of Father George as our Pastor.

Please remember him in your prayers. Our parish is blessed to be shepherded by Father George!

If you or someone in your family is celebrating a special wedding anniversary in 2016, please let us know. Contact Jan at [email protected] or ext 253.

PRAYER

Feast of the Purification of the Lord – Tuesday, February 2

Forty days after Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord at the Temple. The event is described in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2:22–40). According to the gospel, Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem forty days after his birth to complete Mary's ritual purification after childbirth, and to perform the redemption of the firstborn, in obedience to the Law of Moses. Luke explicitly says that Joseph and Mary take the option provided for poor people (those who could not afford a lamb), sacrificing "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." The practice of blessing candles on that day is rooted in the life of Jesus. Forty days after his birth, Jesus was blessed by the priest in the temple (Luke 2: 22-40). The candles represent Jesus as the true light to the nations and honor his sacrifice for us. The blessed beeswax candles are used throughout the year and special candles are blessed and used on the feast day of St. Blaise, for the blessing of throats. (Throats will be blessed on February 3, the feast of St. Blaise, and at the weekend liturgies, February 6-7). We invite you to participate in Mass on February 2 (8:30 AM and 12:10 PM) and to bring a candle from your home to be blessed at the beginning of Mass then lit throughout the year as a reminder of the light of Christ which burns in our hearts and homes.

DAILY READINGS

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10 Ezra gathered the people and read to them from the book of the Law of God. He interpreted the law clearly, so that everyone understood what he had read. He then told them to go and rejoice in the Lord. Second Reading: I Corinthians 12:12-30 Paul explains that a body is composed of many different parts, and that each part has its' own purpose and is important. He compares this to the Church, describing how we are one body composed of many members. All members should show concern for each other and understand that we are all vital to the body as a whole. Gospel: Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21 Luke discusses his decision to write about the events he and the other disciples had witnessed. He begins by telling of Jesus reading a passage from the book of Isaiah, where the anointed one is portrayed. Jesus finished by telling the people that they had seen that passage fulfilled in their hearing.

MINISTRY

FAMILY PROMISE HOST WEEK

CHANCE TO PUT MERCY IN MOTION The Jubilee Year of Mercy has begun at St. Vincent’s where we will shelter homeless families in the school gym during the Host Week beginning February 14. Volunteer sign-up sheets are in the church vestibule. St. Vincent is responsible for several nights and volunteers are urgently needed to sleep overnight. Please consider volunteering for this easy and rewarding shift – bring a friend! Orientation will be provided. Volunteers are also needed for set-up, clean-up, meals, and laundry of linens at the end of the week. For more information about the program or volunteer opportunities, please call Nancy Romain, 973-605-5970 or 973-865-8346 (cell), or e-mail [email protected].

SERVICE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS OF MADISON/FLORHAM PARK

The Knights are holding an information session on Tuesday, January 26 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Media Room/School Library. This being in accordance with the wonderful response they received after each mass this past weekend. All are welcome to come and learn about the organization and have any questions answered. The Knights look forward to meeting you.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE In today's gospel Jesus was "praised by all" except at home in Nazareth where the "eyes of all were intently on him." Acceptance can be hard to find at home due to unreal EXPECTATIONS. Jesus challenges us to

"proclaim liberty" to anyone "oppressed" or "captive" by our EXPECTATIONS.

A PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND!

Dates for the Pilgrimage: January 9 – 18, 2017

Led by Msgr. George F. Hundt and Jan Figenshu

Information Meeting on Feb. 21 at 2:30 PM in the Parish Media Center.

In less than a year, this special opportunity will become a reality. This pilgrimage will change you forever. The group will be limited in number which will enable us to experience the special places of the Gospels in a new and more intimate way. Only a few reservations are still available. Ask any of our parishioners who have gone on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and they will agree. Travelling to the homeland of Jesus changes you forever. The benefits of making this trip are plentiful, experience a spiritual awakening, discover the land of the Bible, gain a deeper insight and understanding of Scripture, form community with your fellow parishioners as you experience this once in a lifetime event. Be transformed in ways you cannot even begin to imagine. For more information or a brochure, contact Jan Figenshu at [email protected] or ext 253.
