Cleaning person for St. Mark’s. One day per week for the church/social hall and twice a month at the rectory. If interested, please contact the parish office. Thank you.

Clearing the Sidewalks at St. Mark’s. Thank you to the person who has been clearing the sidewalks at St. Mark’s. Hugely appreciated!

THE KNIGHTS OF CO-LUMBUS– TODAY, JANUARY 8, IS THE ANNUAL FREE THROW competition at 1pm at the Bot-

tineau HS Gym for boys and girls ages 10-14. Don’t miss out on this event. It will be fun! “Climate Survey”—This week, we have distributed the Climate Survey to those present at weekend Mass-es. Please cross off your name once you’ve filled out and turned in the survey. That way you won’t receive one in the mail. Surveys will be available in the churches next week-end as well, Jan 14-15. The following week, we will do a mailing to those per-sons whose names are not yet crossed off the list. The next two weekends, we will follow up with reminders. At the end of the month we will close our collection of the surveys and begin tabulating the results. We hope this will give us an honest sense of who we are and how we feel as a community. Your participation will be greatly appreciated.

St. Mark’s Parish Council Meeting Tues, Jan 10, 7 pm.

From the Pastor’s Pen

“Epiphany” is a Greek word meaning “manifestation” or a “showing forth”. Some people speak of an epiphany as a moment when ‘the lightbulb’ goes on inside the head. It’s an expe-rience of seeing things in a new light.

The Church’s Feast of the Epiphany celebrates God showing himself to the Gentiles. In Bethlehem, the Magi (outsider, non-Israelites) came to know the mystery of Christ.

The basic message is that Christianity, the arrival of the Savior of the world, is good news to the whole human race. The Epiphany celebrates Christ’s appearance on the world’s stage. Jesus came for everyone. But really, it only happens one meeting at a time. This Sunday we recognize the meeting be-tween this Infant Savior and three representatives from the ends of the Earth.

How did these men find him? Interesting. They followed a star.

The Bethlehem star stands for God’s choice to speak through the created things of earth and sky. Like the Magi, we have found Jesus. What has led us to where we’re at in our Faith? What’s been your Bethlehem Star?

When Jesus is revealed to us, we respond, like the Magi, by offering him gifts. What moves you to give to Jesus what’s most valuable to you? Maybe that’s your star.

The Church also associates two other biblical scenes with the Epiphany. In the Baptism of Jesus, Our Lord ‘goes public’; he leaves his hidden life and is manifest to the people. In the Wedding Feast at Cana, we celebrate the showing forth of Jesus’ glory, his first miracle.

Did you know how poinsettias got associated with Christmas?

Poinsettias are native to Mexico. They were named after America's first ambassador to Mexi-co, Joel Poinsett. He brought the plants to Ameri-

ca in 1828. The Mexicans considered the plants symbolic of the Star of Bethlehem, thus associating the poinsettia with Christmas.

9 Days for Life. See the 99 second video about how to get involved in a nationwide Novena: http://www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/january-roe-events/nine-days-of-prayer-penance-and-pilgrimage.cfm .

Anne McGuire, assistant for the U.S. Bishops Pro-

Life Activities, writes: “I'll never forget briefly getting to

know a friend's son, who was in seminary. Something

about his gaze struck me more than anything else: it

lacked any trace of trying to obtain something from me.

Instead of focusing on achieving personal objectives,

he simply befriended me for my own sake. It wasn’t a

romantic situation, so as I tried to process why I felt so

deeply moved, I suddenly realized: I had experienced

the gaze of Christ.

“That's what being pro-life is about. Cardinal

O'Malley of Boston, former chair of the bishops’ Pro-

Life Committee, once noted, "we discover our worth

when we discover our true identity found in the un-

changeable, permanent fact that we are created in

God's image and likeness and called to an eternal des-

tiny with him."

“Being pro-life means taking a stand against

what Pope Francis calls the ‘throwaway culture,’ which

looks out for its own gains, casting people aside as

though their lives are not worth living. It means seeing

people as Christ sees and loving them as he loves.
