ADVENT INVITATION by The Rev. Gayle McCarty Advent is a time of preparation to welcome Jesus the Christ to make His home in our hearts. We wait and watch and look and long for the two “Advents” of the coming Christ. We celebrate in remembrance his birth while we await his coming again in glory to judge the living and the dead. In holy preparation, I offer you this Advent poem:

Dear Lord, I have swept and I have washed but still nothing is as shining as it should be for you. Under the sink, for example, is an uproar of mice—it is the season of their many children. What shall I do? And under the eaves and through the walls the squirrels have gnawed their ragged entrances—but it is the season when they need shelter, so what shall I do? And the raccoon limps into the kitchen and opens the cupboard while the dog snores, the cat hugs the pillow; what shall I do? Beautiful is the new snow falling in the yard and the fox who is staring boldly up the path, to the door. ADVENT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION FOR ALL AGES by Mary Beth Seltzer
REFLECTIONS CLASS
The Reflections Class will join the Adult Christian Education class and will resume after Advent.
Sundays - 9:30 a.m. in the Commons
December Christian Education is intergenerational! We will meet each Sunday in the Commons from 9:30 - 10:15.
December 3 Bring your Advent Calendars to share - Make Advent wreaths.
December 10 Bring your Nativity scenes to share. We will have Advent activities for one and all.
December 17 Make gifts for Pastoral Care and Outreach. Share the joy of Advent and Christmas with members of our community.
December 24 See you in church in the morning to celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent. See you again in the afternoon or night to celebrate Christmas Eve!
FEAST OF ST. NICHOLAS by Lindsay Wilhite, Programs Chair
Lindsay and McKenzie (and friends) are back again for the Feast of St. Nicholas, Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall.
We will be serving pork tenderloin, McKenzie’s famous potatoes, green beans, salad, and gingerbread cake.
The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children 10 and under, and free for children 3 and under.
Please make reservations. There is a signup sheet in the Narthex, or you may contact Trudy at [email protected] or 731-424-0556 by Tuesday, Dec. 5.
A prize for the tackiest Christmas sweater will be awarded!!
NEW OFFERING ENVELOPE NUMBERS
You will receive a postcard in the mail by Friday, December 29, with your 2018 offering envelope number. You will find bundles of 12 for monthly givers and bundles of 52 for weekly givers in the Narthex beginning Sunday, December 17.
DINE-OUT by Susan Hays
“DINE-OUT” is the newest fellowship opportunity where St. Luke’s communicants and friends of the church meet once a month during January, February, March, and April and again in September, October, November and December, in local restaurants (Dutch treat), scheduled to begin in January, 2018.
There has been a great amount of interest for participating in “DINE-OUT”, so we want to emphasize that this will be a casual get-together time of small groups of 6 or so, where you can request to meet in the evening or during the daytime, whichever is more convenient. We want to be flexible and encourage singles and couples to join in.
If you are presently in a Foyer group, you are welcome to participate in the casual “DINE-OUT” option as well.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Susan or John McCutchen at 731-668-4718 or [email protected]. A sign-up sheet is available in the hallway across from the office until December 31, 2017.
YOUNG FAMILIES MINISTRIES by Erin Sharp and Rachel Humphrey
YFM children will be singing Christmas carols at RIFA during chapel service on December 23 at 10:30 a.m. and at the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve service at St. Luke’s!
If you would like your children to participate in the festivities; bring them to Sunday School and/or contact Erin Sharp 731-220-1956 or Rachel Humphrey 931-224-2858. We will have a rehearsal December 17, following the 10:30 a.m. service.
MORNING PRAYER AT ST. LUKE’S All are invited to join us for Morning Pray-er each Wednesday through Friday at 8:30 a.m. - Gayle+
LESSONS & CAROLS A service of Lessons and Carols will take place on Sunday, December 31st at 10:30 a.m. Consisting of readings that recount the Christmas story and favorite carols sung by the congregation, this service is an annual tradition at St. Luke’s. We look forward to seeing you and your family at this service!

CONVENTION NEWS by Mary Nenarella and Tricia Odom, Wardens
The theme of Bishop Johnson’s sermon was “Good News!” and we truly feel everything about the 36th Annual Convention of the Episcopal Dio-cese of West Tennessee “Good News.” We had 126 positions for volun-teers to fill and 65 of our communicants stepped up to the plate to fill them all. What a fabulous job everyone did from set up to tear down, no one could have asked for a better “crew”! As the Convention progressed we were constantly receiving compliments from those who attended as well as from Bishop Johnson and Canon Davis.
We especially wish to thank Vikki Neblett for the extraordinary work and organization required to choose the menus, and serve the four meals and snacks for well over 150 people. The meals and service received rave re-views.
A huge thank you also goes out to Harry Ecoff who organized and car-ried out the arrangements for parking and security during the convention and Martha Peddy and her volunteers who so graciously welcomed our guests and smoothly processed their registration
Our Vestry members were indispensable throughout the process. Every-one got a workout and will not need to go to the gym for a week! So many of you did so much from table decorations and flowers to making sure the restrooms were stocked. We wish we could name you all but you know who you are and how much your help was appreciated.
One of the best things was that people from the 8:00 a.m. service and those from 10:30 a.m. service got to know each other better while work-ing together. From the bottom of our hearts we wish to thank you for the outstanding support you gave us in carrying out our duties as co-chairs of the convention. We are truly blessed.
CELEBRATING THE DIOCESAN CONVENTION by The Rev. Gayle McCarty
THANK YOU to each and every person who worked to make the Diocesan Convention such an amazing success! Our teamwork, hospitality, organization and attention to details were noted and appreciated by all. Special thanks to Convention Co-Chairs, Mary Nenarella and Tricia Odom and other key leaders: Harry Ecoff, John Nenarella, Martha Peddy and Vikki Neblett. Special thanks to Cody Blue Miller who was the epitome of hospitality for the Bishop, the diocesan staff and Convention attendees. Compliments by clergy and laity alike continue to be shared with me about how well the Convention was planned and the holy hospitality experienced.. Bishop Johnson, Canon Chip Davis and Elizabeth Gassler all sang our praises. Well done!

St. Luke’s week to serve at the RIFA Community Soup Kitchen is December 17 - December 23. They need 1 person to prep in the mornings and at least 4 to serve lunch. This means we need 5 people each day! Please sign up in the Narthex to help St. Luke’s help those in need in our community or contact The Rev. ST. LUKE’S IS BECOMING “PLASTIC FREE” by Mary Nenarella, Junior Warden
These days it is hard to be completely free from plastic waste but we are getting closer!
You may have noticed the new “glassware”. These cups are all corn based and can go in the garbage. They will decompose in the landfill. We are now using carafes for cream to replace the “Mini Moos” as often as possible.
Thanks for helping us meet this goal.

RIFA NEEDS FOR DECEMBER
The RIFA food item for this month is canned hams for holiday food baskets for Madison County elderly citizens.
Please bring your Christmas hams to the church by December 6.
SERVANTHOOD by Mike Roby, Executive Director, Area Relief Ministries
Area Relief Ministries was founded 40 years ago and began coordinating Room in the Inn ten years ago. ARM provides emergency services for families in crisis, rental assistance for 6 - 9 months, job training with Fresh Start, and permanent housing for chronically homeless at Turning Point. ARM’s beautiful building is provided rent free from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and was renovated by Fellowship Bible Church. St. Luke’s is one of 39 churches that partici-pates in Room in the Inn by feeding, fellowshipping and housing our cli-ents, and the volunteers are awesome!
Room in the Inn provided 3,000 beds, 7,000 meals and 26,000 volunteer hours last year with a staff of 8 and the help of 39 churches. Thanks to St. Luke’s for being a part of that.
ARM is funded by churches, grants, businesses and individuals and must raise approximately $200,000 per year and is currently in a financial crisis as we are restructuring our organization to serve more efficiently. God has always provided through His people and will continue as long as we serve His people.

RECYCLING NEWS
Please bring your paper, aluminum cans, and plas-tics to the church on the last Sunday of each month for the Jerry Holt Memorial Recycling Drive. The recycling date for December will be De-cember 31.

‘TIS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON by Susan Francisco, Outreach Chair
The Outreach Committee wants to help remind everyone of the Reason for the Season.
We would like to have everyone do “Acts of Kindness” during Advent. Write what you did in general terms and put it on the poster in the Narthex. For example - help someone load their groceries at the store, give someone a lift to the doctor’s office or offer to sit for someone who is a caregiver. Or you can donate money to a charitable organization, bring food to someone who is sick, send a card to someone you know in the nursing home or give an encouraging word to someone. Whatever you like.
We would also like to get together a pickup truck band to drive around singing Christmas Carols, on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. We will have hot chocolate and hot apple cider for all. We’ll sing to people in their homes, nursing homes or assisted living facilities. If you can play an instrument, join the band. If you can or cannot sing, accompany those singing. If you know someone who would like to hear the group, please call the parish office at 731-424-0556.
We are helping the Exchange Club Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse with an angel tree for Christmas again this year. The Angel Tree is in the Commons. Please be sure to sign the form so we will know which child you chose. Your unwrapped gifts must be delivered to the church by Wednesday, December 6. Please bring them with you to the Feast of St. Nicholas celebration that day. We hope to take the presents to the Carl Perkins office after church on Sunday, December 10, and it would be great if some could help. Those bicycles take up a lot of room!
