Dear People of St. Peters,

One of my favorite memories of childhood—which I still put into practice on rare occasions—is

the practice of making homemade ice cream. It takes work and patience, but it is always worth it

in the end.

In the middle of July mom would buy a basket of peaches from the packing shed in Kline, S.C.

She and my dad would peel and slice enough to pour into the cream and make our favorite flavor

of ice cream.

We had a tall wooden container, held together with metal bands. In the center of that container,

surrounded by ice and rock salt, was a shiny metal cylinder that held the ingredients. It was at-

tached to the motor fastened across the top. There was just enough room on either side of the

motor bracket to add more ice and rock salt as the motor churned the peaches and cream.

I can still remember the monotonous grind of that loud motor, turning the mixing paddle through

the cream. The ice between the metal cylinder and the large, wooden container would shift and

crunch as it melted. We would add more ice and salt as the container got colder and colder, and

the cream got thicker and thicker. We draped towels over the top sometimes to help trap the cold

in place.

Finally—finally—the gears began to slow and the monotonous rhythm of the motor stalled as the

cream thickened to the point of being ready to serve.

It has been more than a year since we held listening sessions, inviting every parishioner to offer

input about the needs and opportunities before our congregation which will shape the vision of

the next 50 years. As a result of your comments and suggestions, we have already implemented

some operational ideas. We also organized a feasibility study committee to look at the campus

and building comments and suggestions you made.

I want to once again thank Ron Plemmons (chair), Jill Fletcher, Dexter Goodwin, Bill Hawkins,

Kim Kauffman, Erin Ryan, Ken Shabel, Beck Sullivan, and Hugh Yochum, and Tom Priddy

(Vestry Liason) for their excellent work and dedication as members of our feasibility study com-

mittee, helping us translate your highest priorities into a vision for our parish facilities. They have

been thorough, thoughtful, and creative in their work with our architect—Craig, Gaulden, Davis.

As with homemade peach ice cream, it takes work and patience to consider the fullness of a con-

gregation’s needs and opportunities and help transform that vision into an understandable plan

which the congregation can consider and respond to. We are getting closer to the point where

you will be invited to see and hear the thoughts that our dedicated and talented committee has

arrived at by consensus.

We still have a little more work to do in estimating the costs associated with the facilities needs

you helped us identify. We anticipate conducting presentations of the committee’s work and vi-

sion to the congregation this fall, and then surveying the entire congregation so that you will have

another chance for input into this process.

Numbers in thousands Giving Transforms Lives

...and Giving Transforms you!!

It surely has transformed many St. Peter's Family Endowment donors this year.

God wants everyone to learn to be more generous with what he has provided.

One of the greatest acts that any human being can engage in is, the act of giving.

One simple gift to the St. Peter's Family Endowment holds the power to transform an individual personally-their attitude,

their perspective...even their financial life.

Please contribute to the St. Peter's Family Endowment, if you haven't, and please keep up your generosity if you have

already supported the Endowment.

We all know it takes work and patience, but we are more in-

terested in doing this right than in doing it fast. We want to

arrive at a congregational consensus that honors the mission

and ministry of the last 50 years, and that positions and pre-

pares us for the next 50 years.

Thank you for your patience. I believe it will be worth it in the

end!

Blessings and Peace,

New Faces at St. Peter’s

Janice Lumpkin 6104 Glen Forest Dr. Greenville, SC 29607

630-921-2220

Janice lived in Naperville, Illinois from 1992 until she moved to Greenville in 2017. Her daughter, Dr. Katherine Leech, is a member of St. Peter’s and is in practice in Green-ville in Internal Medicine. Katherine and her husband adopted Cody last year. Of course, Janice found St. Peter’s through Katherine and is very happy here. Tennis is very important to both Janice and her other daughter, Elizabeth, who is the Assistant Tennis Coach at Oregon. Elizabeth and Jason are expecting their first baby in August. Janice has been a tennis official for 22 years. Now that she is living in the South, she travels to North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Palm Dessert officiating at ten-nis tournaments as the Head Lines Referee and Chair Um-pire. She is on the road 10-15 days a month. Janice graduated from college with a degree in voice. After her move to Greenville, Janice joined the Crescent Mu-sic Club and the Music Club of Greenville. She is also a so-prano with the Chamber Singers who performed at Carnegie Music Hall on April 17th. Wow!

Auditions for Alice in Wonderland

Sunday, August 4 at 1:00 p.m.

This November, St. Peter’s Players will present the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland. Adapted from the classic stories of Lewis Carroll, it’s the tale of a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole and into a fantasy world of bizarre creatures, rid-dles and adventures. Caterpillars, tweedle-twins, Cheshire cats, doormice, playing card soldiers, and a … um … rather mean queen are just some of the unique characters of this show.

We’re looking for 30+ players of all ages. There are a variety of parts for everyone to experience.

Rehearsals will be primarily Sunday afternoons between now and October, with shows November 6-9. There may be call-backs on August 11, and our first formal rehearsal is August 18.

For a more detailed character list, contact Ken Shabel at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing eve-ryone on August 4

Small Kindnesses by Danusha Lameris

I've been thinking about the way, when you walk down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs to let you by. Or how strangers still say "bless you" when someone sneezes, a left-over from the Bubonic plague. "Don't die," we are say-ing. And sometimes, when you spill lemons from your grocery bag, someone else will help you pick them up. Mostly, we don't want to harm each other. We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot, and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile at them and for them to smile back. For the wait-ress to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder, and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass. We have so little of each other, now. So far from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange. What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these fleeting temples we make together when we say, "Here, have my seat," "Go ahead - you first," "I like your hat."
