Parish Council status, which involvesmeeting Cl certain number of criteria, oneof which is that the Clerk is deemed to be

"a competent clerk. " Experience andlength of service are not sufficient to beachieve that status., but a newqualification - the AQA Certificate in LocalGovernment Administration has been

designed as the test for "competentclerk" criteria in the Government,s,Quality Parish Status initiative. RonDarley was recently awarded thisqualification - the first Clerk in Hampshireto receive it.

St. Leonard's ChurchyardIn 1997 Hampshire County Council surveyed the Churchyard, and in 2004 we were advised that it had beendesignated a S.I.N.C. (Site of Importance for Nature Conservation). The category into which it falls isAgriculturally unimproved grassland. The P.c.c. is delighted with the designation, as a special managementregime had been in operation since 1989.

ISSUE 322

The management involves leaving as much of the Churchyard unmown as possible, allowing for the obvious needfor paths. At the end of the summer, one mow is given after the flowers have dried off and seeded. The results ofthis final mow are then removed, resulting in slowly decreasing fertility which most wild plants prefer. We hopethat over the years many more varieties of wild flower will come, resulting in many different insects appearing, astheir food plants reappear. Some of us in the congregation are more interested in this than others, but constantpeering at the unmown grass has made us realise that it is working. Currently we have massesof yellow (somewhite too) bedstraw, and there are many six spot Burnet moths flying. Their caterpillars fed on the birdsfoottrefoil in the spring, and large numbers of chrysalides can be seen on the grass stems. Last Sunday, after Church, Iwatched a moth begin to emerge from a chrysalid. If you want to see the same thing happen, call into theChurchyard on a sunny afternoon shortly. The moths are dayflying, and are red and black in colour. Please don'twalk into the unmown areas though, as we really want to keep them for the flowers, moths and butterflies, andthings will be destroyed by hefty feet!

We have already had a beautiful show of meadow saxifrage in the grass, and after the bedstraws and scabious, there will be some campanulas (I can't remember which one). It will pay to keep an eye on the churchyard if youare interested in learning how our countryside used to look, before the use of fertilisers and herbicides made sucha difference.

This year, Gill Palmer and I have started a formal Church Survey, which we hope to continue for a number ofyears, so that valid comparisons can be made. Neither of us is an expert, but we are both extremely interestedand have good books to help us with identification. For instance, we have now learned how to tell the differencebetween bulbous and common meadow buttercups, whereas before we just thought buttercups. We are alsointerested in any other signswe may find of birds, grass-snakes,mammals etc. One of the mowing team has seena grass-snakethis year, and in the past little owls have nested in the churchyard, but don't appear to be this year.We are compiling a record of what we find, but as we only started this year, there is not much to show as yet. Itwill include photographs, and in the future may well be quite interesting as a record of a country churchyard andit's unimproved grassland..

The Wine Walk proved to be a fun evening, and

a great deal of interesting Spanish and Portuguese wine, with delicious food, was consumedin the most sophisticated venues north of Marbella. The P.c.c. is most grateful to our generous hosts who were Tracey and Mark Mathias,

David and Barbara Evans, Marilyn and David

Guyatt and John and Micheline Donaldson. There was a profit of £680, which is a recordfor this event. Thankyou to everyone who sup

The Wine Walk virtually coincided with GordonSnook's 80th Birthday. A cake was produced, and much fun was had by allespecially Gordon who conducted his Happy Birthday song with much verve andaplomb! (well perhaps more of the former ..)

Margaret KewOne very happy memory I have of Margaret is finding her, quite often, sitting with my mother Mollie, in her living roomat 5 Church Lane, and taking charge of the coffee pot and the biscuit tin with her usual serenity and good humour.

These visits sometimes had the practical value of providing a comfort stop, my mother's cottage being conveniendy setbetween the Church and Margaret's house in Woods Lane. As we all know, Margaret spent much time at St. Leonard'sabout her various duties and this explains in part the number of visits she paid to 5 Church Lane.

However, Margaret's kindness and her generosity with her time were the true explanation for all these visits. She was alsovery loyal to old friends; she had known my mother for over forty years through W.I., Church and almost every othervillage activity. It could be said that Margaret's involvement in village life in so many ways is actually illustrated by herfriendship with my mother, another long-serving worker in the village community.

Margaret's visits lifted my mother's spirits, especially in recent times when nearly housebound and visitors having becamea lifeline to the outside world. Margaret certainly provided that and more, and my mother often says how much shemisses her.

A Photographic RecordI, like possibly many people in the village have often looked at old photos of Cliddesden and said to myself Iwould like a copy of this one or that one. There are believed to be quite a number of old photos and possiblypostcards of the village held by villagers and their families past and present. Through the newsletter I wouldlike to propose that it would be marvellous if these photos and postcards (subject to copyright considerations)could be brought together in a "Village Collection" that would document a history of Cliddesden and might beused in an exhibition and to raise funds for village organisations. The idea would be to scan such items on to acomputer so that the pictures could be held electronically and printed off for sale as well as deposited at theCounty Archive Office. I would like to appeal to people who have or know the whereabouts of such items (andany related information) and would be willing to loan them for scanning to contact me to discuss how they canhelp.

Is there someone out there who has good or excellent photographic skills and camera equipment to recordcontemporary views of Cliddesden? Its homes, street scenes, people, and other interesting takes on village life?

I understand that Mike Hatcher who used to live in the village has a particularly good collection. If anyoneknows the whereabouts of Mike I would appreciate his contact details.

A Canadian airline pilot wrote in his journal, a fewyears ago, that on one particular flight due tostrong crosswinds, he had unfortunately hammeredhis ship onto the runway with a very hard greeting. The airline had a policy, which required the firstofficer on the flight to stand at the exit door whilethe passengers disembarked, to smile and repeat"Thanks for flying our airline." His commentsindicated that, in light of the poorlanding, he avoided eye contact with thepassengers in an attempt to avoid any smartcomments that might result. Finally there wasonly one little old lady left to exit the plane. Walkingslowly up the aisle with a cane, she approachedthe awaiting first officer and said, "Sir, do you mindif I ask you a question?" "Why, no, Ma'am," saidthe pilot. "What is it?" "Did we land, or were weshot down?"

Conservation

The first few days of August mark the old Celtic Lugnasad, the start of harvesting. Early farmers believed Groupthat the spirit of the harvest, the Earth Mother, dwelt within the crop. As the corn was cut, the spirit wasforced to retreat into the ever-dwindling remainder. The last stalks of wheat, her final refuge, were thusspared the sickle, and woven in to the form of a woman. The following spring, the kern moder (the original corn dolly) wasploughed under, so returning the spirit of fertility to the earth.

Now that the harvest has been gathered, insects roam the bare fields and fall easy victim to the carrion crow. Lapwings glide overthe stubble in search of prey, and the ground-loving weeds, fumitory, chamomile and silverweed come into prominence. Poppiesblaze their crimson glory around the field margins.

The harvestman, frequently confused with spiders although only distantly related, can be seen scanning the soil in search of insects, fungus and vegetation, particularly after a shower of rain had dampened the ground. The "Daddy-long-legs", the crane fly, comesdancing around lights on late summer evenings sometimes entering houses.

This is the season for butterflies and many species can be seen on the wing in search of nectar and patrolling their domain. Some, such as the brimstone and peacock, can live for almost a year, hibernating in the corners of sheds. Others live for only a few weeks.Wild grasses and nettles are favourite and vital food plants for many butterflies at all stages of their lives and we can help theirnumbers grow by resisting the urge to mow our verges wherever possible.

The morning and evening bird song has quietened now. After the hectic breeding season, all the parent birds are looking much theworse for wear and are now moulting so keeping a lower profile than when proclaiming their territories during the Spring.

Water is, if anything, more important than food to birds, not only for drinking but also to revel in when bathing, to keep their feathersin good condition. A shallow birdbath in the garden, regularly cleaned and refilled with fresh water, is essential all year round butmost particularly in hot, dry weather.

As the sun goes down, hedgehogs emerge for their nightly forage for food and will be grateful for a cool drink. They are mostwelcome to gardeners for their war on pests but many are poisoned by pesticides, such as slug pellets. Far better to let the naturalresources of this endearing creature do the job instead. They need to build up their fat reserves to survive the winter months ahead.

On balmy evenings, the tiny pipistrelle bat may be glimpsed on his nocturnal flights and will eat up to 3,000 insects in just one night'

There werehomemade scones, whopping juicy strawberries and cream, homemade chocolate eclairs and real BucR's Fizz. We havebeen aSRedto repeat the evening next year and a venue isalready in the offing.Another great successwas the BBO held at the village Hall, eventhough we could not sit outside at that either. Pretty clothesand flowers were on each table. Pat as usual did all the actualcooRing, and did a grand job too. Various members did anarray of salads and the puddings were scrumptious. Anothergood evening was had by all.
