Learning and Living Our Catholic FaithMy dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    Christ's Peace be with you.

By now you probably know that our Bishop has canceled all Public Masses in our diocese (if not read here: https://www.dio.org/coronavirus). As an Oblate Community here at St Mary's, Fr Dave, Fr Ben, Fr Paul and Br Leland and I have been spending a lot more time together, discussing this and all that's happening, what we can do for each other and you, our dear and beloved Parishioners and above all praying together more than ever.

The world is focused on one reality - the Coronavirus and Covid-19. Has the entire world ever been concerned about one and the same thing? Probably not since just before Adam and Eve, our first parents, left the Garden of Eden. There were only two in the world - and before their sin they were entirely focused on God. I believe that in our present moment, we are being invited to focus more deeply and fully on that even deeper reality: God is speaking to us. He's speaking to me and to you and the entire world. I am trying to listen to him with my whole being. Pausing and using the bits of spare time that I now have to hear him - in the many ways he's trying to reach me - through his Word in Scripture, through the Rosary, through the fact that now a growing number of Catholics are not able to receive him in the Eucharist and some of the other seven Sacraments.

O yes, he is speaking and calling out to you and me and the whole world this Lent. "Turn back to me with all your heart! My dear brothers and sisters, in any Lent, I would call to you, as well as try to embrace more fully myself, the admonitions of Ash Wednesday: "Repent and believe in the Gospel" and "Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return." My dear Flock, with great Faith, Hope and Love, let us embrace his call, seeking his mercy and living in all patience, generosity and charity toward one another!

Let's make part of our turning more fully to God, the praying together of this prayer offered us by our Bishops:

"Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen."

Please also join me and the other priests daily at 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. for Mass and Rosary live-streamed on the St Mary's Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/stmarysalton/). There we will work at keeping ourselves together in Christ and begin to establish other ways of building up the Body of Christ in the Riverbend. Stay updated as well on our parish website (https://stmarysalton.com/).

With all my heart, I pray over you this blessing: May Almighty God bless you all, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. May God protect you and keep you safe and close to himself. Amen.

    – Fr Jeremy OMV

THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENTFocus: The Lord of all gives sight to the blind.

Jesus’ power and claims divide those who encounter him. He is the long-awaited one, and he heals all wounds, even giving sight to the blind. We can trust that Jesus can heal all the wounds of our lives, giving us sight to see and a light to follow in the darkness of sin.

In the first reading, the Lord sends Samuel to Jesse of Bethlehem because the Lord has chosen the new king from among Jesse’s sons. Samuel goes, and anoints David in the presence of his brothers. In Saint Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, he exhorts them to live as children of light. In the Gospel, Jesus encounters a man blind from birth. After Jesus gives the man sight, the Pharisees become divided over the account. The man defends Jesus, explaining that he must be from God.

PART ONE - THE PROFESSION OF FAITHSECTION ONE - "I BELIEVE" - "WE BELIEVE"

Man’s Response To God / I Believe – The Characteristics of Faith

    162. Perseverance in faith

Faith is an entirely free gift that God makes to man. We can lose this priceless gift, as St. Paul indicated to St. Timothy: "Wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith."44 To live, grow and persevere in the faith until the end we must nourish it with the word of God; we must beg the Lord to increase our faith;45 it must be "working through charity," abounding in hope, and rooted in the faith of the Church.46

If you have submitted a name for prayers in the bulletin they will remain for one month. If you would like to ask the parish to continue praying, please let the parish office know by calling (618) 465-4284.
