In the beautiful first reading from the Book of Proverbs, Wisdom is portrayed as a generous hostess, who prepares a lovely home and a beautiful meal and invites all of us to partake that we may “advance in the way of understanding.” Wisdom is one to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and encourages us, as St. Paul does in the second reading, to “try to understand what is the will of the Lord.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS — DOCENT CORNER

Docent Corner - Our Lady of Bethlehem The statue of Our Lady of Bethlehem is located in the chapel on the left side of the Basilica. It is an original artifact of the Carmel Mission and is California’s first statue. Here are some interesting facts about the statue: The Rosary in her hands is an 18th century Spanish colonial emerald-colored glass rosary with solid gold links, gold filigree beads and a gold encased cross. The Dress is an authentic 17th century statue gown obtained by Mission Curator Harry Downie from Mexico in 1954. It is embroidered in silver thread and laces up from the back. The cape matches the embroidery of the dress. The Acorn Earrings are solid gold and were an offering from the family of Tulita Westfall. They were made in 1773 by the first jeweler in Monterey, Manuel Trujillo, who was also a soldier at the Presidio. The Crown is made of silver and was a votive gift of Spanish naval officer Captain Don Juan Bautista de Matute. The tarnished sterling silver rose was a votive gift made in 1982 and was made by Tiffany Jewelers of New York. The Silver Rays are of solid sterling silver. The antique aureole (halo and rays) was made in Seville, Spain (hallmarked) in the 18th century. The original aureole disappeared after the end of the Mission period. The original hair on the statue was a wig and was in very poor condition. Harry replaced it with the hair from his mother. The gold necklace and Locket on the infant belonged to Harry Downie’s mother. The locket was given to her when she was born. The gold ring on the statue’s left hand finger was Harry’s grandmother’s gold engagement ring. The silk Back Drop reportedly comes from Canton (now called Guangzhou), China by way of the Spanish Manila galleons. There is a gold ring from Delano High School class of 1965 on the statue’s right hand. (Source unknown…but ask a Docent!) ANNOUNCEMENTS

Historic Conservation of Our Lady of Bethlehem

Special Mass Celebration in Her Honor

This coming August 23, 2018, the statue of Our Lady of Bethlehem, the oldest religious statue in the State of California and the patroness image of the Diocese of

Monterey , will travel to the bay area for conservation cleaning and repair. When Saint Junipero Serra first arrived in Monterey in 1770, he set up a temporary altar for the celebration of Mass on Pentecost Sunday. On this altar he placed the

statue of Our Lady of Bethlehem, patroness of the missionary expedition. Following Mass, the Salve Regina was chanted.

On August 19, 2018 at the 11 am celebration of the mass, we will bid Our Lady of Bethlehem a brief farewell by singing the same anthem that Saint Junipero Serra sang before this image, the Salve Regina. Please join us!

Our speaker this month will be our own Dennis Lucey, leading a discussion on Scientific Inquiry in Scripture Study. One way to develop our understanding of Scripture is to use the method of inductive reasoning common in science. This complements, but does not replace, the more “spiritual” aspects of Scripture. Dennis holds a BA in Scripture Study from Seattle University and an MA from Catholic University Leuven, Belgium. He has been teaching and leading retreats on Scripture Study for more than 25 years. Join us for interesting and enlightening conversation as we delve deeper into our faith, and enjoy dinner with friends. All are welcome! You can also send questions to Deacon Warren Hoy at [email protected]. We hope to see you there!

LITURGY VAULT / STEWARDSHIP

Thank You for your Stewardship! Your con nued generosity for the week ending 8/5/2018

Plate Collec ons: $ 16,092.42 Total Weekly Contribu ons: $16,092.42

I thank you for your sense of Stewardship and your great generosity. —Fr Paul, Pastor.

LITURGY VAULT “The liturgy is celebrated for God and not for ourselves; it is His work; He is the subject;

and we must open ourselves to Him” (Pope Benedict XVI, 3 October 2012).

Mystérium Fídei Last week, we looked at how the Church calls the Sacrament of the Eucharist the mystérium fídei or “mystery of faith”. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Christ once again emphasizes His Real Presence in the Eucharist as His listeners continue to “murmur” and dispute “among themselves”. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you; he who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him” (John 6:53-56; RSV-CE). How do we respond to this mystérium, this mystery? In his first letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul discusses the Sacrament of the Eucharist and how we should examine our consciences beforehand, in order to receive this sacrament worthily:

“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself” (1 Corinthians 11:27-29; RSV-CE).

In 1996, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops approved Guidelines for the Reception of Communion, which are included in missalettes and other participation aids published in the United States:

“As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (Code of Canon Law, 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all”.

One response to the mystery of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist is preparation. It is for this reason that since the eleventh century, the Penitential Act takes place at the beginning of almost every celebration of the Mass, when the celebrant invites us to “acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries”.
