THE WOMAN TAKEN IN ADULTERY
A tight circle of faces surrounds the young and earnest rabbi and the young and shamed woman. In Cranach
the Younger’s 16th century oil painting called, The Woman Taken in Adultery, we enter the tense
momentary silence after Jesus has been asked to pronounce sentence on the nameless sinner. Each face on
the crowded canvas is different. Expressions range from bland interest to prurient curiosity, from romantic
yearning to leering lustfulness, from judgmental dismissiveness to bleak cruelty.
According to the Law of Moses, outlined in the Books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, there were three
crimes that warranted capital punishment. Those crimes were idolatry, murder, and adultery. In the case
of adultery, the prescribed punishment was strangulation for the man and stoning for the woman. There is
a sense of thrill in this moment, as the crowd waits to see whether life or death will be the outcome, a bloody
spectacle and the downfall of a new celebrity.
In presenting the woman to Jesus, the Pharisees addressed Him as “Teacher.” As a teacher or rabbi, He had
the authority to decide, to exercise a great power. If Jesus advised that the punishment should be imposed,
He would be going against HIs message of love and forgiveness. If He set the woman free, He would be
placing Himself in the position that sin does not matter.
As He stooped to write in the soil, Jesus comes down on the side of Law, just as His Father imprinted the
commandments on stone. As He stooped to write in the dirt, He comes down on the side of forgiveness.
He came to reclaim not to punish.
Forgiveness is demanding. Forgiveness challenges the sinner to go, and sin no more. At the center of the
picture, the viewer glimpses two of the woman’s fingers laced into the hand of Jesus. With His help any
sinner can become a saint. With His help, we can go, and sin no more.
LA MUJER SORPRENDIDA EN ADULTERIO.
Un círculo cerrado de rostros rodean al joven y serio rabino, y a la joven y avergonzada mujer. En Cranach
la pintura al óleo del joven siglo XVI, titulada La Mujer Sorprendida en Adulterio, entramos en el tenso
silencio momentáneo después de que se le pidió a Jesús que pronunciara una sentencia sobre el pecador sin
nombre. Cada cara en el lienzo lleno de gente es diferente. Las expresiones van desde el interés insípido
hasta la curiosidad lujuriosa, desde el anhelo romántico hasta la lujuria desenfrenada, desde el despido
crítico hasta la crueldad sombría.
De acuerdo con la Ley de Moisés, descrita en los Libros de Levítico y Deuteronomio, hubo tres delitos que
justificaban la pena capital. Esos crímenes fueron la idolatría, el asesinato y el adulterio. En el caso del
adulterio, el castigo prescrito era la estrangulación del hombre y la lapidación de la mujer. Hay un
sentimiento de emoción en este momento, mientras la multitud espera para ver si la vida o la muerte serán
el resultado, un espectáculo sangriento y la caída de una nueva celebridad.
Al presentar la mujer a Jesús, los fariseos se dirigían a él como "maestro". Como maestro o rabino, tenía la
autoridad para decidir y ejercer un gran poder. Si Jesús aconsejara que el castigo fuera impuesto, iría en
contra de su mensaje de amor y perdón. Si Él liberara a la mujer, se colocaría en la posición de que el pecado
no importa.
Cuando se inclinó para escribir en el suelo, Jesús descendió del lado de la Ley, tal como su Padre imprimió
los mandamientos en piedra. Cuando se inclinó para escribir en la tierra, descendió del lado del perdón.
Vino para reclamar no para castigar.
El perdón es exigente. El perdón desafía al pecador a irse, y no pecar más. En el centro de la imagen, el
espectador vislumbra dos de los dedos de la mujer atados a la mano de Jesús. Con Su ayuda, cualquier
pecador puede convertirse en santo. Con la ayuda de Jesús, podemos irnos, y no volver a pecar.

Every Sunday we will be asking for donations of certain
items we need for our festival. For this week, we will be
asking for donations of foam food containers and they will
be collected on next Sunday, April 14, 2019.
