The Church celebrates John the Baptist’s natural birth by a festival of his‘nativity,’ assigned exactly six months before the nativity of Christ. BecauseJohn represents the old, he is born of an elderly couple; because herepresents the new, he is revealed as a prophet in his mother’s womb. John’spreceding Jesus was clearly fixed in the Christian tradition, so much that intwo of the three Gospels that begin their story before the public ministrywith Jesus’ first appearance on Earth, John the Baptist is brought forth toprecede the appearance as well.

John came to teach us that there is a way out of the darkness and sadness ofthe world and of the human condition, and that way is Jesus himself.********************************************************************************
