Secretary's Message

Members all,

As you may know, each year we host a Cub Scout sleep over for Maynard Cub Scout Pack here at Maynard Elks Lodge #1568. Each year we provide educational entertainment and a craft project for the scouts to do. This year the Cub Scouts will be visiting out Lodge on May 19, 2017, the entertainment will be reptiles, (what boy wont like that?) and they will be building wooden bird feeders! Your board of directors would like to take this opportunity to say thank you Sudbury Lumber for donatingthe wood for the bird feeders and to Gary Carter for picking up all the wood from Sudbury Lumber and delivering it to the lodge.

This is an awesome thing that our lodge does for the Cub Scouts and they look forward to it every year. It requires a number of members to come and help out. Some of the jobs are: cutting the wood to havethem ready for the scouts to assemble, help them build them, stay over night at the lodge, are a couple of the things where help is needed. If anyone would like to help, please let Steve Hardy, Flo or any officerknow and I know Steve will find something for you to do. This is a very fun and rewarding night and to see the look on the Cub Scouts faces makes it so worth the time spent. Come check it out you'll be glad you did.

Fraternally yours,Darrell French Per, Trustee------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Active Heroes is an IRS approved 501c3 Charity with the mission to support all U.S. military service members, veterans and their families through physical, educational, and emotional programs in an effort to eliminate suicide. Active Heroes’ vision is to eliminate military/veteran suicide. www.activeheroes.org

Pictured alongside the Luther Blanchard memorial in Littleton are veterans, from left to right: Ed Wasiuk (U.S. Air Force), Scott MacKinnon (U.S. Army) and Conor Galgay (U.S. Marines).

Let's Never forget our veterans, their history, sacrifice and bravery. This story is about a nineteen year old young man, Luther Blanchard, whom was born in Littleton, MA. Luther was the first American Patriot to diefor our freedom and liberty on April 19, 1775. Massachusetts Patriots lead our young nation towards selfgovernance, liberty, pursuit of happiness and low taxation before any other state joined in the fray. These brave minutemen assembled and marched to Concord, MA on April 19, 1775 to defend freedom from tyranny.

Now April 19th is a local holiday in Massachusetts. It's called Patriots Day. No other State in the Union celebrates Patriots Day. It is uniquely a Massachusetts phenomenon. We host the Boston Marathon on Patriots Day. It's been a celebration of sorts for over one hundred years.

In the 1700's the majority of Massachusetts citizens were true Patriots and many were proud Minutemen. Unfortunately, around 60% of today's "Massachusetts Minutemen" remind America's veterans of a new breed: Let's call them "Massachusetts Cambridge Comrades". The truth may sound harsh. It comfortingto remember the truth is it's own defense. We improve as Patriotic citizens when we embrace the historicalcontext of our nation's founding and how we have changed over the generations.

The beautiful people of Massachusetts started a war for liberty against the greatest military power in the world, England, to embrace freedom and reject big government tyranny and government suppression of liberties.

In the mist of today's political chaos, I ask myself: What happened to us? In a few short generations these same Massachusetts citizens seem to embrace everything that is anti-American, anti-constitutional. It's Verysad. My apologies, I digress.

This young nineteen year old Patriot sacrificed his life in Concord, MA, at the North Bridge on April 19, 1775, (We now call it the Old North Bridge) so all American citizens of today can enjoy their civil rights.

- Ed Wasiuk

And during this month when we call attention to Patriots Day -- and to all our veterans and servicemen -- a special salute to Ed Sokolowski: a Vietnam era Army veteran, and Elk and the American Legion Commander for many years!
