Dear Friends,In 2012, we celebrated each child’s successes. Whether it was a small step on the path to discovering com-munication, or a giant leap forward in their individual education curriculum, we can’t resist sharing in a child’s joy.

We laughed with Jackson as he explored science games on an iPad.Tearsfloodedoureyesaswe watched Alyssa sign ‘I love you’ to her mom. We look forward to Johnny’s future as he now dreams of being a teacher. Each light bulb moment reveals so many more doors

for a child to open as they reach their full potential.

As the programs at St. Rita School continue to grow and de-velop,wefindsomanymorechildrenthatcanbenefitfromouruniqueapproach to learning. Our goal is to help children overcome any com-munication barrier and allow them to dream and achieve.

With each New Year, there are challenges not only for the school but for students and families as well. Those challenges can become achievements with your help. Please consider making a gift to start a child’s New Year with hope. Any amountmakesatremendousdiffer-ence that is noticeable in the smiles of each child and their family. Help us give each child a language so they can communicate and achieve their dreams.

Our goal is to help children overcome any communication barrier and allow them to dream and achieve.

Mainstream school was not an option for Ashlye and she was en-rolled at St. Rita School for 16 years.

“Mom became a champion and advocate for Ashlye’s legal rights as a special needsstudent,”saidJeff.

“She ensured that Ashlye’s developmental needs were not compromised by the local public school dis-trict’s desire to save money. Overseeing Ashlye’s physi-cal, medical, and mental development became Mom’s full-time job.”

“I truly believe it was a gift from God Himself that Ashlye ended up at St. Rita School for the Deaf. It was there that Mom and Ashlye formed life-long friendships

with the St. Rita Family and deaf community. The entire St. Rita Family embraced Mom and Ashlye, and was instrumental in Ashlye’s continued

development. Mom’s passion to see Ashlye achieve developmental milestones kept Mom motivated and energized during a time when her own health was often much worse than most people ever knew.”

Ashlye was a blessing to her family in so many ways, but also to her community as she inspired Jefftobecomeanadvocatefor otherstudentswhocanbenefit from the education at St. Rita School. The passion and love thatJeff’sparentsdemonstratedwhile raising Ashlye motivated Jefftoorganizeagolfoutingtomemorialize them as outstanding parents and grandparents, while alsobenefittingSt.RitaSchoolforthe Deaf. The funds raised were put into a scholarship fund to help other children like Ashlye attend school here.

new playground allows all students to play together without limitations

AtSt.RitaSchoolfortheDeaf, staffmembers work hard to break down barriers for students in and out of the classroom. But despite their best efforts, somestudentshadtowatchfrom the sidelines during recess.

The overhaul of St. Rita School for the Deaf’s playground was long overdue since the metal play struc-tures were installed over 40 years

ago. Without having funding for items suchasplaygroundequipment, astheoldequipmentdeteriorated, themaintenance crew did their very best tokeeptheequipmentusablebutitbecame nearly impossible as it aged. Asidefromtheageoftheequipment, the changes in our student body now including children who not only may be deaf but also have Down

syndrome, developmental delays, motor skill issues, cerebral palsy, spinabifida, sensorydisorders,or visiondeficiencies, ourplaygroundhas many barriers to prevent all of our children from being able to use it. As a result, not only were parts of theequipmentunsafeforsomeofour students who did not have the capabilities to maneuver through it, it was very limited for the students with physical and sensory issues to play on.

The new playground has ac-tivities that children with multiple disabilities can enjoy and interact with their peers. Phase 1 of the playground is complete and includes ramp access, play panels at ground level, and surfacing that walkers and wheelchairs can ride over with ease for the children with physical needs. It also includes many sensory toys and activities. Phase 2 of the project begins soon and will include a physi-cal education section as well as a playset for older children.

Because of your generous support, St. Rita School makes a differenceWorry. Sadness. Fear. Guilt. Helplessness. Anger. Confusion. Disappointment. More worry.

Parentinghasalwaysencompasseddifficultperiods — times when parents feel concerned and confused. Have sleepless nights when they worry about how well theyarefulfillingtheirresponsibilitiestotheirchildren.Raising a child with special needs “ups the ante.” Meet-ing the complex needs of the child can be extraordinarily difficult,frustrating,emotionallydraining-andexpensive!

Because of you, Violet is able to communicate with her family

When Violet was born premature her parents were not concerned that she failed her hearing test, but six months later when she failed again it hit them hard. “As hearing parents, we weren’t really sure what to do,” said Lynn. “It surprised me that it hit me so hard, but we were really upset. Later we found out that she had some hearing in her right ear.”

Right away Lynn got in touch with an audiologist and a special-ist came to their home in Eastgate to work with their family on sign language. Knowing that they were

planning to move to Sharonville, the specialist suggested they visit St. Rita School’s Loft Program.

Even though Violet was learning sign language at home, her com-munication skills improved tremen-dously. “Her signing improved,” said Lynn. “But her verbal communication improved drastically too. At St. Rita School, they use total communica-tion. Not only were they signing with Violet, but also using speech. They were doing everything they could to help her communicate.”

“Life without St. Rita School, well we would be lost. We didn’t know what to do,” said Lynn. “With St. Rita School, Violet will have the

foundation she needs to have all options and do whatever she wants to do as she gets older. Violet would have struggled in main stream school where teachers are not well equippedtohelpher.AtSt.RitaSchool they know what Violet needs and she is not just another person, they care about her.”

“Violetisasocialbutterfly.Welove that she comes home and says thatsheplayedwiththestuffoffthegeography shelf and learned about planet earth. It’s not like any other preschool. She gets to learn and be an individual at the same time. Every-day Violet comes home and says she loves school.”

flowers overseen by teacher Richard Miller and his students. The gardens contain an annual tiered flower bed, a perennial garden, herbs, a succu-lent garden, and native wild flowers. There is a formal garden pond com-plete with goldfish and water lilies. The newly renovated outdoor train display is a real treat for the train lovers whether they be children or adults. Pet rabbits live in the garden area and serve as “compost helpers” as their droppings are collected and added to compost collected from the cafeteria to speed up the break down process and enrich the soil of the flower beds. Recycling and composting is encouraged, and the senior class of 2012 installed the first garden sculpture in front of the Loft Building using recycled plastic

caps collected by parents, students, and staff.

No garden would be complete without a greenhouse, and St. Rita has a spacious greenhouse, which serves as a classroom for students as they learn about plant care and propagation as well as bird watching and many other classroom lessons and activities.

Plans are under way as we con-tinue to maintain and transform the learning garden area. Students will help in the development of a future Nature Center, an outdoor Garden Wooded Path, outdoor classroom areas, development of new beds for flow-ers and vegetables that can be grown for use here at the school, so students

can reap the total experience of plant life from seed to their lunch plate. Thanks to the Learning Garden program at St. Rita, students receive “hands on” learning in a fun and very interactive way, with lessons in Math, Science, Art, Social Studies and His-tory, as well as Reading and Writing.

The Learning Garden is much more than a garden. For the students of St. Rita School for the Deaf it is an opportunity to be closer to nature, a place to learn about respecting the environment and taking care of plants and animals. For the teachers

it is a place of solace. For the community it is a place of visual beauty.

The Learning Gar-den is a remarkable anduniqueplacethat

touches something deep in the heart and soul.

You helped Gemma find her voiceAs Gemma’s third birthday neared, her mother Rita awaited the doc-tor’sofficialapraxiadiagnosisforher daughter. Gemma wasn’t able to successfully interact with other chil-dren her age and only had a 10 word vocabulary. “She wasn’t doing well

with other kids,” said Rita. “Other kids didn’t want to play with her be-cause she wasn’t like them and she didn’t talk much.”

Rita enrolled Gemma in other programs, but she was not progress-ing and her problems were getting worse. At an appointment at Chil-dren’s Hospital, St. Rita School’s program for kids with apraxia was recommended for Gemma. Immedi-ately Rita began to see changes in her daughter.

“In just 4 months she went from a 10 word vocabulary to 30 to 50 words,” said Rita. “She is using sign language a lot and is trying to com-municate more. Socially she is doing great. The kids in her class know her by name and hug her and she hugs

them back. It doesn’t bother them thatGemmaisdifferentandtheylikeher for who she is.”

St. Rita School has been a good fitforGemmaandasRitawaitsfortheofficialapraxiadiagnosisandher school district’s response in a few weeks she hopes Gemma will be able to continue attending. “The teachers have a lot of patience and they take each child where they are at,” said Rita. “Each child is treated individually and there is no com-parison between students. You don’t hear ‘she isn’t doing this yet’ or ‘she needs to be here by now.’ Instead the teachers tell you how your child is succeeding. Every triumph is cel-ebrated no matter how small it is and thechild’sconfidencegrows.”

Blast from the PastAn excerpt from our 1923SilentAdvocate. Childrenwhoareborndeafareun-able to learn to speak unless some wonderful method is used to enable them to perceive sound so that they may know and imitate the voice. Only in the last 20 or 30 years has any real effort been made to de-velop a method of teaching the deaf child. For years I have seen these children as they enter St. Rita School for the Deaf and have marveled at the change in health and spirit which occurs in a few months. They are treated as though they have no

handicap in life. They see the other children doing things that are useful and beneficial and they soon learn

to adapt themselves to the new life which is conductive to the develop-ment of mind and body.
