Reconciliation and First Eucharist Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or St. Rita Elementary School.
Matrimony Contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament!
Confirmation A two-year program for freshman/sophomore age teens. Apply through the Office of Religious Education.

Communion for Sick and Homebound Parishioners St. Rita ministers provide Communion home visits. Contact the Parish Office • 355.1292 or Jill Muhs • 355.9810 • [email protected].
Anointing of the Sick Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord’s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!
If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest; sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

PASTOR’S CORNER
Dear Parishioners and Visitors to St. Rita,
“… he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.”
These words from today’s gospel passage from St. Luke could not be more foundational to our faith and religion as Roman Catholics. These words testify to the earliest origins of the Holy Eucharist that you and I celebrate this very Sunday. And this is one of the reasons that our Roman Catholic Church has retained its centrality in the Eucharist. Our church always wants to be identified with the presence of Christ “in the breaking of the bread.” The disciples with Jesus at Emmaus image the Christian Community in microcosm—His Church—that ultimately understands itself best when gathered at the table of the Lord. This IS where Christ is most easily recognized—when we are “doing this in memory of him.”
Another part of the Emmaus account links solidly with last Sunday’s gospel proclamation which spoke of the encounter between Jesus and Thomas. Thomas has his doubts and we are invited with him to be “not unbelieving but believing.” This Sunday Jesus says to the two disciples (who have not yet figured him out), “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!” Make no mistake, this challenge to believe which appears repeatedly throughout the Easter Season is deliberate. It is all follow-up and follow-through to the renewal of our baptismal vows on Easter Sunday.
Renewed faith is what transforms the two bewildered disciples with Jesus on the way to Emmaus. Renewed faith is what transforms the apostles gathered in the upper room with the doors locked—including Thomas, at last—so that they might go forth with courage to proclaim the Good News and to baptize.
But it all funnels into that one solemn, precious and profound act of the breaking of the bread—the Holy Eucharist. It is the glue that binds us as Christians. It is the body and blood of the Lord that saw Christians through persecution after persecution. It is not just accidental that Jesus appears to his apostles in the upper room where they had first celebrated Eucharist at the Last Supper. This is precisely what they were going to need when faced with the challenges ahead. It is not even a leap for us then to conclude that this is why we gather on the Lord’s Day—the first
day of the week—to “get what we need” for the rest of the week. What might be asked of us this week? We cannot know. But we do know that we will be better prepared to meet any challenge if first we have met him in the breaking of the bread, and if we are not unbelieving, but believing.

St. Rita Feast Day—Thursday, May 22
Our patroness’ Feast Day is celebrated each May 22 on the Anniversary of her death (1457). This is a special day for our Parish and we invite you to share St. Rita with the thousands of devotees who come from throughout Southern California to visit our Shrine and to honor and pray to St. Rita.
The Shrine and Church will be open from 7:30 am until we end with Benediction at 7:30 pm.
We need helpers: to greet visitors; to accept flowers at the Shrine; and to help sell St. Rita souvenirs. We are asking for women and men to volunteer for a 2-hour shift. Men are especially needed for traffic control.

We are piloting a new curriculum based upon the Sunday Gospel and thus far have had great feedback.
