    students.Anexcellentweek!WealsosaidgoodbyetoourYear11studentsandYear13

    studentsastheywentontopreparefortheirexams.TheirMasseswere

    celebratedatthistime.

    Anniversary,some

    takentoAmpleforthforan

    in

    the

    Philippines,

    theschoolmanagedtoraiseover1000fortheappealandwe

    heldaspecialdayofprayerintheChapel.Someofourstaff

    hadaminiretreattoAmpleforthforaneveningofprayer,

    meditationandgoodfood.WecelebratedYouthFridayin

    schoolbutalsoheldabigyoutheventfortheparishes.To

    marktheendoftheYearofFaith,theschoolpresentedtous

    astunningweekofthewellrenownedmusical,JesusChrist

    Superstar.

    DECEMBER:Astheyeardrewtoaclose,Adventwasvery

    Thisprogrammeisforanystudentswhohaveexperiencedanykindofloss,forexample;parental

    orfamilyseparationincludingmilitaryorother,Divorce,Bereavementorlongtermillness.The

    programmerunsfor12weeksandwillbeledbytrainedmembersofstaffinschool.Ithasahigh

    successrateandisrecognisednationallyasthebestopportunityforsupportforyoungpeopleexperiencinganykindofloss.

    Year10andYear11 HitleronTrial HistorySceneProduction

    OnMonday3rd

    FebruaryfiftyYear10andYear11studentsvisitedMiddlesbroughTheatreto

    attendaproductionofHitleronTrialandanexambustingworkshoptohelpstudentsprepare

    fortheirGCSEUnit2examination.Themorningstartedwithachiefexaminertakingstudents

    throughhowtheirworkwouldbemarkedbytheexamboard.Studentsgottotakeontherole

    ofexaminersthemselvesandmarksampleanswers.Studentswerethenaskedtogivesome

    feedbackaboutwhyparticularresponsesachievedparticularlevelsandmarksandoneofour

    Year11students,OliviaAndersonwassingledoutbythechiefexamineroutof560studentsas

    beingastar!StudentswerethenaskedtotakepartinatrialofAdolfHitleractingasthejuryin

    thetrial.

    Students

    participated

    with

    enthusiasm

    as

    the

    trial

    recapped

    some

    of

    the

    key

    learning

    oftheirGCSEcourse.Attheendofthetrial,thejurywereaskedtovoteonthefateofHitler,

    whowasfoundguiltyofcausingWorldWarTwo.ForYear11students,wewillbeusingthisasa

    platformtolaunchourYear11revisionsessionswhichwillbebeginningthisFridayandrunning

    weeklyuntiltheirexaminMay.Sessionswillinvolverecappingcontentaswellaspractising

    examskillsandwillbeheldinM5andM6from3.153.45everyFridayevening.ForourYear10

    students,thisactedasaperfectrecapofthecourseinpreparationsfortheirmockexamwhich

    willbetakingplaceinlessonstheweekcommencing10th

    February.

    AwarenessDay

    ASBAD,

    Hall.

    The

    aim

    of

    the

    event

    is

    to

    create

    awarenessofwhatantisocialbehaviouris.Theyweresplitinto8groupsand

    wenttodifferentinteractivescenes.Afewofthescenesweretoteachthem

    aboutalcoholandwhatcouldhappen,causingalarm,distressandnuisance.

    Theyhadtodecidewhatchoicestotake,therewasalsoaCourtroomscene

    andhowantisocialbehaviouraffectsthelivesofindividuals.

    Itwasalovelydayandenjoyedbyall.

    CongratulationstoJackTwydale whosenamewasdrawnoutofthemany

    correctentriesreceivedduringJanuaryfor thechesspuzzleinDecembersParents

    Bulletin.

    ChessNewsSchoolTournamentBegins

    Thelibrarycontinuestoplayhosttochessgamesatlunchtimes,withthelibrariansableto

    giveoutchesssetsandboardsonrequesttoanystudent.However,inordertoallow

    completebeginnerstolearnhowtoplaythegameinaquieteratmosphere,orformoreexperiencedplayerstoimprove

    theirskills,thechessclubisnowheldWednesdaysinScienceLab5from3.154.15pm.Italsoallowslongergamestobe

    played,with

    individual

    guidance

    and

    advice

    available.

    Forthosewholikeabitoffriendlycompetition,aschoolchesstournamentbeginsafterthehalftermbreak,withall

    studentsinvitedtotakepartin6weeklyqualifyingrounds,uptotheEasterbreak.Theyplayaselectedopponentevery

    week(theydecidewhentoplaytheirgame).Themoresuccessfulstudentswillthenplayanumberofgamesinthefinals,

    whicharescheduledtotakeplaceearlyinthesummerterm.ArangeofYearandHouseprizeswillbeawardedattheend

    soitsdefinitelyworthentering.

    Year9TechnologyDay

    OnWednesday5th

    FebruarytheTechnologyDepartmentheld

    itsannualYear9TechnologyDay.Studentsspenthalfaday

    movingaroundthedepartmentsamplingdifferentactivities.It

    wasanexcellentfundaythatgavestudentstheopportunity

    totrynewthings.InFoodandCateringstudentsweretaught

    decorativechocolatetechniquesandfeatheringusingicing

    andchocolate,inTextilesstudentshadfunworkinginpairsto

    designandmakearecycledheadpieceforacelebrity.Theyworkedwithavarietyof

    materialsand

    were

    able

    to

    model

    highly

    imaginative

    and

    creative

    head

    pieces.

    In

    ResistantMaterialsstudentswereaskedtodesignandmakeacontainerthatwould

    holdandcushionaneggdroppedfromthetopofapairofstepladders.Thewinners

    weretheteamswhohadaneggthatdidn'tcrackopenafterthecontainerhadbeen

    droppedandhitthefloor!

    OnThursday30th

    JanuarytwelvebuddingYear9chefsenteredtheEnglishMartyrsBakeoffchallenge!

    Theirtaskwastoworkinpairstomakeasavouryvegetarianbakedproductthatcouldbeeatenatateddy

    bearspicnic.Eachteamhadtomakeshortcrustpastryandsomereallyinteresting disheswerepro

    duced,fromcurrypastiestocheeseandvegetablequiche.Judgingwasextremelytough,howeverwe

    eventuallysettledontwowinners ThomasTurnbullandJoeLaudonwiththeirgoatscheeseand

    cranberrytartsandCiaraPurnellandGeorgiaMasonwithacheeseandtomatopicnicbasket.Both

    teamswereinvitedbackonWednesday5th

    Februarytoseewhocouldproducethebestchocolate

    clairs.Afteranothertoughcompetitiontheboyswonwithperfectlightclairs.Theywillnowbe

    workinghardtodevelopalloftheirdishesandJoeandThomaswillnowgoforwardtoenter

    theCatholicPartnershipBritishBakeOff

    whichwillbeheldatStJohnsSchool,

    BishopAuckland.Duringthecompetition

    thechefswillhavetocompleteatechnical

    bakechallenge.Theywillmakechocolate

    clairswiththeirownchouxpastry,their

    vegetarianbakedproductandshowstopper

    decoratedcupcakes.Wewishthemthebest

    SportsCentre. WithEnglishMartyrsbeingoneofonlyafewschoolstohavequalifiedinall4competitionshopeswerehigh

    andthestudentsdidnotdisappoint. Havingtocompeteinarangeofathleticdisciplinesincludingsprinting,distance

    running,throws,jumpsandthespeedbounce,EMSheldtheirownacrosseachindividualcompetitionfinishingasfollows:

    springboardforthemainathleticsseasonstartingafterEaster.

    CatholicPartnershipCrossCountryOnFriday7thFebruary,TheEnglishMartyrsPEDepartmenthostedtheCatholic

    PartnershipCrossCountry.ThestudentsofEnglishMartyrswerejoinedby

    studentsfromtheother11schoolswithinthePartnership.Therewereover80

    studentsineachracewhosetoffinextremelymuddyconditionsunderfootbut

    thesunwasshiningandspiritswerehigh.

    SacredSongandScriptArtExhibitionatDurhamCathedral

    EachyearourschoolgetsinvolvedwithalloftheCatholicPartnershipschoolsinthe

    NorthEastandwechooseareligiousthemetocreatevarioustypesofartisticwork.

    ThisworkispubliclyshowninDurhamCathedralasamajorexhibitionofwork.Itis

    aprestigiouseventandonethatourschoolhasbrilliantlyrepresentedovermany

    years.Thisyearthethemewas:SacredSongandScriptandwechosetoproduce

    3Dceramictowersandalargecanvaspainting.

    TheconceptbehindthetowersfortheYear10studentswasstraightforward.They

    weretoconnecttogetherandproducesculpturalformsthatalonearenicetolook

    atbut

    are

    required

    together

    to

    make

    sense.

    In

    terms

    of

    our

    faith

    Iwanted

    this

    learningtoreflecthowwefeelaboutGod.OurrelationshipalonewithGodisa

    beautifulthingandtoberejoicedbutwhensharedandheldtogetherbyothersit

    haspurposeandisstrongerforit.Thehymnchosenwasspecificasthewords

    exemplifywhatweweretryingtoachieve.Allthattheyhavedone,andallthatthey

    didisnowbeingofferedovertoyou.

    Eachstudentwasgivenonelinefortheirvesselsoallthevesselswillconnect

    togetherfortheviewertounderstandthem.

    TheprojectstartedinOctoberandittooknearly9weeksforthestudentstofinish
