The Annual Summer Concert will be on Thursday 10th July at The Borough Hall at 7.00 .pm. As always this is one of the highlights of the school calendar. Music will be provided by the School Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Big Band. EMS Voices, Guitar Group, Drum Group and a number of soloists. Tickets will be available from the music department and the school office after half term priced at £4.00 / £3.00 concessions. The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College Parents’ Bulletin No 6 May 2014 Academy Conversion The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College became an Academy on 1 st May 2014. This gives us the opportunity to use the freedoms and flexibilities of Academy status to continue to do the best for our students. We do not expect our day to day activities to be significantly affected. For example, we are not changing the name of the school nor are we changing the uniform. I would like to thank all parents for the support they have shown through the process of conversion and look forward to working with you in this new phase in the development of the school. Payments All cheques which are payable into the school fund should be payable to The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College. Aerosols Please note that aerosol cans (e.g. antiperspirants) are not permitted on the school site at any time. Such cans can cause a severe allergic reaction in some of our students and staff. I ask all parents to support us in order to protect those individuals We currently have an exhibition in our school Art Gallery of the work of Joe Spence, one of our A level Photography students. The exhibition is called '2 Years in the Making' and includes some images from his course at English Martyrs Sixth Form, as well as some fantastic images that he has taken for Hartlepool United Football club. There are also some excellent portraits of some of our staff, inluding Headteacher Mr Lee. The exhibition runs until the 19th June and everyone is welcome to visit. Entry to the Gallery is through the main school reception and is open 9.00 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Friday. It is well worth a visit! Music Instrument Appeal!!! Time for a Spring clean? Do you have an unwanted musical instrument lying around at home? Perhaps a guitar or keyboard that you no longer play! The Music Department would be very happy to put it to good use. Any instrument in good condition would be very much appreciated. Please bring instruments directly to the Music Department or to the School Office. Year 7 students at The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College were given a homework task which involved making an animal out of recycled materials. 11 year old Wiktoria Borowicz made a lifesize baby giraffe from chicken wire, papier mache and bedsheets. The project took about six weeks and the giraffe is now on display in the school foyer.

Debating CompetitionThe debate team made a valiant effort in the regional finals at Newcastle University on April the 2nd. With the eight qualifying teams divided into two groups for the first part of the day the English Martyrs Team started off round one against Whickham School and Sports College. The first debate was argued for EMS by Nikita Nighoskar and Anshuman Sinha it was a difficult debate and a close call in the audience vote but in the end the judges decided that Whickham School put forward the most convincing argument. The EMS team then got a welcome break whilst they watched Trinity Sixth Form and Whickham School debate whether commercial surrogacy in poorer countries is exploitative, in this round Trinity came out victorious. After a sumptuous lunch and an opportunity for a more informal discussion with the judges the EMS team started round three against Trinity School, in this debate they argued over whether or not unpaid internships are exploitative. Though the EMS team led by Nudrat Ahmad and Chloe Harvey gave a very convincing argument the judges felt that the position put forward by Trinity was better and therefore they progressed from Group two into the finals. In the final Trinity faced off against fellow Catholic Partnership School St.Bedes. A great performance from St.Bedes, with a particularly stellar performance from Frances Gibson meant they won through to the national finals in late June, for which we wish them every success.
