Fountas and Pinnell

★ Common Core aligned★ Assessment-based to determine a child’s level of reading and literacy

skills, as well as comprehension. ★ Assessments are done one on one.★ Fluency and comprehension are both required in order to move up to the

next level (Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy and proper expression. Comprehension is the ability to read an appropriate text and understand it, by answering literal and inferential questions.)

★ Literal questions are questions that can be answered directly from the text. Ex: What did the boy play with? Inferential questions are questions that require further thinking usually made by making personal connections to the text. Ex: Why do you think the boy was so happy?

★ Reading levels are coded by the alphabet (Levels A through Z)★ Pre-emergent level AA; read decodable text and picture books★ End of the year expectations: Kindergarteners should be reading

at a level D/E First graders should be reading at a level J/K in order to meet common core expectations.

Level A

• Lots of repetition (language patterns 3-6 words per page).

• High frequency words (I, my, the, etc.)

• Short predictable sentences.• Lots of Illustration support

for emergent readers.• Shorter less complex, but

relatable stories.• An emergent reader

reading at a level A book has little fluency and relies on picture cues for support with unfamiliar words.

Level E

• Longer sentences (more than ten words).

• Two-eight lines per page.• Mostly words with

predictable spelling patterns.• Most of the concept/text is

supported by pictures.• Longer complex stories, but

still relatable.• An emergent reader

reading at a level E book has fluency during oral reading and places appropriate stress on words.

Next Steps ★ Reading Reform: Go over letter sounds and corresponding pictures. Stick with the

same pictures so your child doesn’t get confused.

★ Writing: Make sure your child is using the correct letter case (ex: capital and lowercase).

★ Concepts of Print: When reading at home, always remind your child of the front & back cover, reading from left to right, author and illustrator

★ Math: Use Math in everyday life! Count, add and subtract at home and while out in the community. Make it fun
