NEWSSalvatorian College
Dear Parents,
It has been a busy and productive week in school.
Throughout the week, myself and senior colleagues have been visiting our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils in their lessons. We have been impressed with the variety of different teaching and learning activities that our pupils are experiencing, every day in our school.
We have seen great teaching and learning in English, Maths, Science, Art, RE, PE, Geography, History, MFL and Design and Technology.
We have looked very carefully in pupil’s books, to ensure that the quality of work pupils are completing is of the highest standard. We have been impressed with the marking by our teachers and the frequency that we can see the assessment for learning in pupil’s book. Pupils are becoming more confident to ‘self’ and ‘peer’ assess each other's work, which helps their own learning and development.
There have been a number of activities taking place both in school and outside of school, which I hope parents enjoyed reading about. As a school, we are engaging our pupils in a much wider variety of extracurricular and enrichment opportunities, which pupils are both enjoying and responding to very positively.
On Tuesday, I attended the Parish Mass with Year 8B, Allan, our school chaplain and Ms Stevenson, their form tutor. I was very pleased with the pupil’s behaviour and conduct in church and this was commented on by a number of Parishioners I spoke to after Mass.
As part of our Founder’s Day celebrations, all Year 11 will attend the Parish Mass on Friday, 4th December 2015.
Thank you to those Year 10 parents who attended the reporting evening on Thursday. I am very pleased to report that attendance was 81%.
Parents were very complimentary about their son’s educational experience at the school. I received some very supportive comments from parents about the continued changes and improvements they can see in their sons and in the school. This is really valued and appreciated.
I would like to remind parents of our expectations in terms of maintaining uniform standards in the cold weather. High attendance, for all pupils and punctuality will be a priority focus right until the end of term.
Severe Weather and School Closure Policy
The school will always aim to provide an education for our pupils. The school will always open during term time, unless prior notice has been given.
If extreme weather conditions cause the school not to open we will post information on the school’s website and email information to parents as soon as that decision has been taken, normally by 7.15 am.
If there is no notice of a school closure on the website then the school will be open as usual.
If the school is forced to close during the school day, parents will be sent either a text message or e-mail, before pupils are dismissed.
Work will be provided via the ‘work from home’ facilities.
Yours sincerely, !!!

Theatre Trip - Drama - Year 9 & 10
Yes - ‘YOU Can’! !“Study after study shows that seeing, hearing and meeting real life ‘role models’ is a great way of inspiring others to achieve
their goals.”
Former Minister of State for Employment, and host of the performance, Esther McVey. !One of the aims of the Drama department this year is to expose students to a wealth of creative stimulus, in the hope that
their aspirations continue to become ignited. Another aim is to enhance their appreciation of the creative arts inside, and
outside, of the classroom. !With this impulse, a great opportunity arose from the National Youth Theatre, a world-leading youth arts organisation, to watch
a performance of ‘You Can’, an inspirational play that showcased the competencies of resilience, self-evaluation and
leadership. !This short play was then followed by an interactive panel discussion, where we all were privileged to have an opportunity to
engage in a question and answer session with successful people in their fields. !A huge thank you to Mr Bispham, Ms Connors and Ms Kara for their support during the trip; and, Mr Cooper and Ms Bryan for
helping with the logistics. !Ms Pasion !!

What did Year 9 think
of it? !“Last Monday afternoon, on 16th
November 2015, the Year 9 and 10
drama classes embarked on a
journey to the Ambassador’s theatre
in Covent Garden. !Before we arrived, I wasn’t expecting
to watch a funny play or to meet
famous people on a panel for
questions and answers. !The play ‘You Can’ was about
people ,inspiring us to chase our
dreams and to not give up, regardless
of anyone else’s opinions. !The football theme helped to get us
all engaged, and the characters were
all believable. Everyone was laughing
at the humorous tone of the play;
including the numerous sexual
innuendos! !We met Nick Knowles, who is most
famous for his television presenting on
BBC’s ‘D.I.Y SOS’; he spoke about the
work that he currently does with
remaking the homes of veterans and
his motivation to always do more. !We also met Dan Freedman, a
football journalist turned novelist - I
was lucky to get his autograph! !We also met a conservative MP and
Sope Dirisu, a working actor - you may
have caught him on your television
screens on Channel 4’s series of
‘Humans’. !All interviewees offered their advice
on how to deal with rejection, to
believe in yourself regardless of other

importance of considering diverse
career options. !I also enjoyed meeting the cast of the
play - the only thing I would say is that
it was too short!” !James McCabe - 9B

Merrill Linch Trip, 13th November - Pupils’ reviews
What did Year 10 think? !!On the 16th November, the drama students went on a trip to see a performance near Leicester Square; we were
accompanied by Ms Pasion, Mr.Bispham, Ms. Connors and Ms. Kara who all kindly supervised us on the trip. !The show was about an 18 year old who was pursuing a coaching degree; he had to manage a 5 a side team for his course.
Unfortunately, he got injured and could never play again so he pursued management instead. One of the themes was how to
be successful. All of the players, of the 5 -a-side team, had different stereotypical reasons that teenagers adopt when aspiring
towards their career goals. One of them being a complete obsession with failure as we all have the potential to succeed, but
fear of failure can hold us back. Throughout the play, dilemmas unfolded and solutions were visually shown. !The coach of the team gave each character advice on what they needed to do to be successful; later on in the play, we saw
how the advice paid off, as they were all happy and fulfilled thanks to his time and effort. !I believe that the playwright represented a plethora of characters to demonstrate a solution for whatever character appealed
to each audience member, as it could reflect our current mentality. !After the performance, the National Youth Theatre brought on celebrities to talk us about how to achieve our dreams and we
had the opportunity to ask them questions. The celebrities, including the likes of skilled actor Sope Disiru, who stars in Humans,
TV presenter Nick Knowles, and Dan Freedman, football journalist and author who has met the likes of Messi and Ronaldo.
When the whole production was finished, we were allowed to socialise with the cast and the celebrities, which was a unique
experience as most theatres do not permit that. !I had a memorable time and a great educational experience, which I believe has enhanced my drama skills. Overall, it was a
‘banterous’ performance, which used comedic effect to get across valuable points - including valuable life lessons. !Mwathi Muriu-Gakonga - 10G
Theatre Trip - Drama - Year 9 & 10
Cameron Stiles !"We departed school at 8:45 am, and despite the hustle and bustle of the London streets we managed to find our way to the Merrill Lynch building for our 10:30 start. !We were all very excited to be in such a prestigious building. The event itself was in a ‘Question and Answer’ format, with us asking the questions and the Merrill Lynch employees answering. !We were split into groups and volunteers from the company came round to our tables, telling us about what exactly it is that they do. We asked them a variety of questions such as; what A levels they did to get the job, the kind of interview process they had to undergo, what kind of extracurricular activities they took part in when they were younger. !One thing that I was astounded by was the huge variety of roles there are, which enable a bank to operate. Before the event I thought banking was just about people sitting behind a glass window taking people’s money and inputting numbers to the system. However this trip opened my eyes to the variety of roles involved in banking. It was a fantastic day and I feel very privileged to have experienced it.” !!Evan Welsh !"Last Friday was a good day. We went to a careers’ networking event at Bank of America. We met so many people who work at the bank and learnt about what they do to get an idea of what we want to do in the future. !After that, we went to the Museum of London - getting caught in a heavy storm on the way! We spent the rest of the day in the museum looking at artefacts from across the centuries. Overall it was a great day and a good experience at the Bank of America.”

World Records - Maths
Extravaganza at
An excellent team of "teachers" from Year 9 dubbed the "Salvo Green" with myself and Miss Edwards as willing helpers went to St Teresa's Catholic Primary School on Monday afternoon to present a World Records Maths Event to the Year 5 students. !The young students participated in events such as trying to run as fast as Usain Bolt; making the longest snake in the world and creating beach towels for the tallest man and shortest man in the world to take on their holidays. !Our Salvo Green teachers gainfully showed the younger students how to hula hoop, but were beaten with a staggering 149 hoops in one minute by a very skilled year 5 student. Still, not as many as the American Gregory Dillon, who holds the World Record at 243 hula hoops in a minute! Although with practice and determination, maybe...... !Making a headband with the longest hair in the world, a staggering 5.67m long, created much excitement and more than a just a few tangles to brush out! !Our finale was to see how many year 5 students were needed to fill the largest man in the world's trousers. The magic number was ten. Well, he does have a rather full waistline of 3.02m!
The year 5 students engaged excitedly in all the activities on offer and were taught about the measurement of both length and time by our Year 9 Salvo Green team of teachers. !They did a fantastic job! !To celebrate the event and acknowledge all the learning that took place, our boys gave the Year 5 students a certificate of participation. They were all star performers! Thank you to St. Teresa's Primary School for inviting us in to celebrate the World Records Event. Lots of maths and lots of fun all rolled into one! Thanks too to Miss Edwards, for all her help and support. !Finally, we can't forget to mention our Salvo professional photographer, Jack. He was present to capture the event. We hope you enjoy the pictures! !Thanks to our "Salvo Green" team of teachers : Adam, Salvatore,Charlie, Luk, Stephen, Reece, Max, Bailey, Fintan, Lorcan. On Monday, 16th November, me and 9 other pupils
went on a great maths trip to our old primary school, St
Teresa’s. !At St.Teresa’s we taught year 5’s about length and time
through a series of Guinness World record activities. !This included a 10m sprint, the longest snake, most
hula hoops in one minute, making a beach towel for
the tallest and smallest people in the world and also
the longest hair. !For the 10m sprint, we asked the children to measure
out 10m, then they ran 10m and we asked them to
time themselves and work out if they had beaten Usain
Bolt’s record of 9.58 seconds! !For the longest snake, they stuffed a pair of tights with
scrap newspaper and measured it to see if it was
longer than the longest snake. !A group of children then tried to beat the hula hoop
record by trying to get 243 hulas in 1 minute - one
managed 149! !The children were amazing and eager to learn about
maths in this fun way and we enjoyed teaching them. !We all had a grey maths afternoon and hopefully we
will do something similar again. !Adam Rowlands, 9A !

at the same time."
"I felt so excited because there was a lot to do and it
was fun.”
"I thought the afternoon was fun because there were
lots of activities."
"I felt excited that new people were coming to our
school."
"I liked that we did fun activities and we learnt new
things - like the tallest person in the world."
"It was very fun and exciting. I would love to do the hula hooping again. I loved it because it's maths in a fun way. I learned
something new."
"I think the workshop was fun and amazing. It was educational because we were learning about maths."
"I had so much fun hula-hooping, running and many more things."
Ms Conboy (Year 5 teacher):
“The afternoon was really enjoyable. The children had so much fun and it got them really excited about measurement. The
children were engaged and the activities were really creative!”
On Wednesday, 2nd of December, Year 10 pupils will be visited by a Drama work shop groups called ‘Chelsea’s choice.’ !‘Chelsea's Choice’ is an innovative and powerful production highlighting the very serious and emotional issue of child sexual exploitation. !The audience will gain a better understanding of the devastating impact that sexual exploitation has on a young person's life. !This is a very useful and innovative way of raising awareness of the issues
relating to sexual exploitation and reaching young people, giving them some skills and knowledge to be able to protect themselves from this form of abuse. !Further details can be obtained by visiting http://www.alteregocreativesolutions.co.uk/chelseas-choice/ . !Mrs Griffin, Head of Year 9, Child Protection Officer

!Welcome to The Metropolitan Police Commissioner's
Christmas Tree Project 2015
In 2014 we had many presents kindly donated by the public helping to provide presents to children who may otherwise not have received one last Christmas. This year we aim to help even more children get a gift this
Christmas. !
Last year's success, resulted in 6,840 gifts given to children across London. !
Met Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said: "Christmas is a time for giving and who more worthy of receiving that generosity, then children in care who can find this season difficult.
"The MPS is grateful to all those who took part in last year's campaign to spread some Christmas cheer and we hope to do the same this year." !
The gifts will be for children aged from one week to 17 years and benefit those in care across all London boroughs. The children are currently being cared for by foster parents or are in residential care homes. !
All gifts will be delivered to the children at their care homes before Christmas Day. !
If you would like to donate a present please forward your details via

Science - Biomimicry Project

T - 020 8863 2706 F - 020 8863 3435E - [email protected]://www.salvatoriancollege.com
Year 9 have been studying Biomimicry in their Science lessons and this gave the students the opportunity to create a project on some of the examples we looked at. !The projects were judged and five winners from each teaching group were selected, with an overall winner for the year. !Dalvin was the overall favourite and was awarded a £10 Amazon voucher. !The runners-up (receiving a £5 Amazon voucher) were: Ives, Adam, Max and Jared.
Some of the designs developed for the projects included spiny headed worms and skin grafts , tardigrades and vaccine storage, whale fins and turbine blades, and Termite mounds and building ventilation. The students who took part are to be commended for their hard work and imagination in the development of their projects and I would like to personally thank all of the parents who supported their sons during this time, Amanda Ward Head Of Science
“Tuesday, 17th November was an eventful day. This day was
different, as it was the day that we had to present our
science projects. !Our task was to do a booklet about Biomimicry and to
incorporate it with either a poster or a model. !I decided to make a model. From our class groups the top
3 were picked out. The following pupils were in my group:
Callum, Luke, and me Dalvin. We were selected to present
our projects.
We went to the Hall, where we had to explain our projects
and what our inspiration was. !My teacher, Miss Ward, had told me that termites were
amazing, and to my amazement they became my
inspiration as time went on and I discovered more about
them. !Termites, were very surprising. In my lessons I began to
understand that termites do not only destroy but create
beautiful things. Outside the mound looked like a dirt
column, but inside it was packed with intricate tunnels and
specific chambers. I realised that their society linked to us
as they too have a hierarchy, a queen, workers and a
defence against predators.
I was astounded by this and because it inspired me, I
decided to make a Termite Mound.
After the top 4 projects were picked, Benoit and Rizalito,
Max, Jared and me were all given a prize.
There had to be an overall winner and that winner to my
surprise was me - Dalvin. To my astonishment I had won! !I was overwhelmed with emotion. I was happy, but also felt
humbled as there were so many bewildering projects Miss
Ward talked about. I felt that our projects were good. But I
was happy to have won.” !Dalvin, 9A

Safety Tips for Teenagers
!Personal safety skills prepare teenagers and pre-teenagers to navigate (get
around) their World with Safety and Confidence. This document aims to
provide you with basic and practical life skills to help you stay safe, when
out and when at home.
!KEEPING SAFE • Stay alert, and keep personal stereos/MP3 players turned off or low, so
you can hear what's going on around you
• Stick to busy, well-lit roads, and avoid short cuts through alleyways; I know it may be tempting to avoid the long route, but being safe is more important than a short route home with alleyways, which poses great risks.
• If you think someone is following you, you should cross the road or go to a place with lots of people around, like a bus stop or shop and stay there until the person has gone. You can also call a family member or the Police from your mobile phone to inform them of the situation.
• You can carry a whistle or alarm on a key chain to warn off suspicious strangers. When in danger, blow your whistle or press the alarm on your key chain to warn off suspicious strangers.
• When travelling by bus, you should try to use bus stops on busy roads
• When travelling by bus, sit where the driver can see you and avoid sitting in an area where there is not a lot of people travelling.
• Do not travel with people that you don’t’ know well or trust. They may put you in a situation you don’t want to be in.
• If you sit upstairs on the bus, sit with a friend and avoid sitting upstairs alone.
• If someone tries to take something from you, NEVER resist or fight and
handover the item. Your LIFE is more important than valuables. You can always replace valuables, but you cannot replace your LIFE.
• Keep mobile phones and other valuables out of sight, and turn off your mobile phone ringer to avoid attracting attention.
• If you are being bullied or feel that you might be in danger, speak to someone about this.
• Make sure someone always know where you are going and when you will be back, even if this is only a general idea or at least with one other person.

Safety Tips for Teenagers
Being at HOME
• Although being at home alone during the day or evening can be fun, but it
also means you are in charge of your personal safety in the house. To increase
your personal safety at home, follow the basic tips below:
• If you answer the telephone and aren’t familiar with the person on the other
end, don’t tell them you are alone. Tell them that your parents or siblings are
busy or they are unable to come to the phone right now.
• Don’t give personal information about yourself over the phone. If someone
calls doing a survey or selling something, just tell them you are unable to
answer their questions.
• Make sure all the doors and windows are securely locked to prevent people
from entering the house without your permission.
• At night, to make it visible that someone is at home, leave a light on at the
back of the house, such as, the kitchen light on, or dining room light on and a
light on in the front of the house.
• If the front door knocks, check to see who it is quietly by looking through the
spyhole or if you do not have a spyhole, discreetly look through the curtains
(without moving the curtains or you can peep through the blinds) and if you
do not recognise the caller, do not answer the door
