NEWS Salvatorian College Dear Parents, It has been a busy and productive week for students. The majority of Year 11 pupils have now completed their GCSEs and I have been very pleased with their examination conduct and behaviour. Pupils have really appreciated the additional support that has been provided for them by their teachers and I would like to express my thanks to colleagues, for all their hard work and dedication to our pupils. Year 10 pupils have been undertaking their internal exams this week and again, I have been very impressed with their mature and very hard-working attitude towards these examinations. On Thursday, we witnessed some ‘history in the making’, as this is the rst year that we have entered pupils for GCSEs in Year 10. Pupils in Year 10 and 11 completed the 2 hour statistics paper, side by side in the hall, and it was great to see so many of our most able students and mathematicians completing this exam together. Both sets of pupils were very positive about the exam and I look forward to sharing the results with Year 11 and Year 10 pupils on the GCSE results day on Thursday, 20th August 2015. Even though we have been focused on our senior students in school, this week we have been visiting Year 7, 8 and 9 lessons to monitor the quality of teaching and learning and see how much progress pupils are continuing to make in their academic studies. It has been great to see so many different activities in different subjects and pupils have responded very positively to senior colleagues and myself who have been visiting their lessons. In addition to the ‘drop ins’, we have planned a work sampling activity, to look at the quality of work overtime in pupil's books to make sure that they are making progress throughout the academic year. I am very pleased to report that there have been a number of very high prole sporting successes and I would like to congratulate those individuals and school teams who have achieved such great results this week, in both swimming, cricket and athletics. It is important that we celebrate the gifts and talents of our pupils and I really appreciate the additional support provided to our pupils by the PE department. Next week we are looking forward to the Hustings for our new Head Boy, Deputy Head Boy, Senior Prefect Team and Sports Captains and Deputy Sports Captain. This is a very important event in the life of the school and always sets a very high standard for future generations of pupils, who are aspiring to leadership positions in our school community. We will be providing the proles and manifestoes of all the candidates next week. Thank you to those parents who have already paid their contribution towards the whole school trip to Westminster Cathedral on Wednesday, 8th July. Please ensure the reply and permission slips are returned to your son’s form tutor. On Thursday, the PFG met for the last time this academic year, in order to provide feedback to senior teachers on parental perspectives about our strengths and areas of improvement this academic year. Parents discussed our School Improvement Plans for 2015 - 16 on which they were able to make valuable comments. In addition, parents were provided with our new proposed assessment structures and also our new provision for educational trips and visits. Parents also looked ahead to the new academic year to plan their own work schedule. The PFG are very committed and I would like to thank them for all their continued support and hard work of our school improvement work. Performing Arts Taster Day at St Dominic’s

On Monday 15th June, 30 Year 8 pupils from Salvatorian

College attended a performing arts day at St Dominic's

Sixth Form.

The selected pupils have demonstrated an aptitude for Art

& Design, Design Technology, History of Art, Drama, Music

and P.E. The pupils took part in a sample lesson in their

designated subject and then also choose one extra

subject.

The day also included a tour of the college and an

interactive presentation ran by St Dominic's students. !Thank you to Miss Hands and Miss Pasion who led the trip. !Karen Wilkinson

Head of Creative Arts, Pupil Premium Lead Teacher !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a report of the day written by Taylor, Jotham,

George, Sepahr and John  from 8C !"The trip was amazing and exciting, I have learnt many

new skills while at St.Dominic's. The staff were very helpful as

were the students who helped us find our way around the

college and helped us in our lessons. !The presentations of all of the groups were amazing,

especially the drama group, who showed us two

performances with the genre being conflict. They used their

actions instead of their words. !The music group made a short video of them playing and

singing ‘Uptown Funk’. The History of Art group analysed

paintings. They then drew pictures on tinfoil. P.E did a

physical fitness test and Design Technology took ordinary

objects and enhanced them. Art made moving scenes

with two plastic cups inside each other.

Thank you to St. Dominic’s for giving us this amazing

opportunity to share with us what our future may be like." !

Laudato Sii

The final form Pilgrimage took place on Wednesday.   !The pupils went to the Tyburn Shrine to see the relics of many Saints and then walked to Westminster Cathedral and across the river to Southwark Cathedral.   !

In walking these four miles the boys had time to reflect on the legacy of the martyrs in England and in the Universal Church. !As it was the anniversary of Cardinal Hume’s death, the boys also offered prayers for his soul at his tomb.

On Thursday, the Holy Father released his latest Encyclical Laudato Sii.  These type of Papal letters are usually named after their first sentence.  Unusually this encyclical’s title is in an Umbrian-dialect of Italian rather than Latin. This is due to it beginning with a quote from the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi often called the Canticle of the Sun. !Much has been written about this document before its promulgation.  On reading it, it is rather obvious that it is not a radical environment manifesto or communist ploy; nor does the Pope make statements of a scientific nature.   In effect he presents the holistic ecology of creation building on the work of St. John XXIII to Benedict XVI. Pope Francis calls on each individual to realise their place in humanity and within the cosmos.  He calls for us to be aware of our relationships with nature, community and each other and to live up to our vocation to stewardship and responsibility. !Throughout the centuries the Supreme Pontiff has taught on the issues of the day and how the gospel sheds light on them.  St. Pius V confronted the schism of the Reformation; Leo XIII addressed the rapid industrialisation of the late 19th Century and St. John XXIII considered the possibility of nuclear holocaust during the Cold War.  Pope Francis likewise is proclaiming the Good News in the face of environmental concerns. !M.
