Shumway “Sparkle”
Shumway Elementary School January/February/March 2016
Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on February 10th & 11th .
Please mark these important dates on your calendar as your
participation in conferences will help set the tone for a continued
partnership with your child’s teacher and our school. It has been
proven over time that the key to a successful education
is the emphasis on cooperation between the child,
the school, and the home. Remember that conferences
allow you the chance to check on your child’s progress,
find out about teacher expectations, and inform the
teacher about what happens at home with your child.

Got little ones at home or in kindergarten wanting to read? Here are a few tips to maximize this special reading time with your son or daughter:
• Before you begin reading the book, look at the cover and title and ask your child what they think the story is about.• Pause periodically and ask your child questions about the pictures and what is happening in the story.• Did the character do the right thing? What would you have done differently?• Tell me what is happening in this picture. Where is the character going? What is the character doing?• Make up an alternative ending to the story. What do you think would have happened if…

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to all the families that contributedto Shumway’s Holiday Giving Tree. We were able to support19 students and 5 families and make their holidays brighter.
Spring & Class Pictures
Spring and Classroom Pictures will be taken on Friday, Feb 5th. Flyers will be coming home with your child.
If you wish to buy a classroom picture you will need to send your payment with your child on Feb 5th.
For their individual pictures you will not need to send any payment. (If you wish, you can pick your background choice and send the flyer back with your child, otherwise a gender neutral background will be chosen for you).
A few weeks later a package will be sent home with a proof of your child’s photo. If you like the photos you can purchase from the packages by sending your payment back with your child or order online.
Every year, a number of students become ill for many reasons, including exposure to other ill children in the classroom. To help you make decisions about whether or not to send your child to school, we have put together a list of indicators to help you to decide. A child should not be in school and will be sent home if the following conditions(s) are present.
1. Fever 100 degrees or higher. A child should be fever-free for 24 hours (without medication) before returning to school.
2. Persistent cough.3. Sore throat with fever and/or white spots on the throat.4. Rash with fever illness, such as chicken pox, measles, etc.5. Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. A child should be free from
symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.6. Red, itchy, and draining eyes. If conjunctivitis or “pink eye” is
diagnosed, the child must be on medication for 24 hours before returning to school.
7. Prolonged headache and/or stomachache.8. Swelling or pain at a level that may interfere with learning.9. Earache.10. Toothache.11. Head lice – A child must remain at home until
treated with medicated lice shampoo and the
nits are removed. The child must be clearedthrough the health office before returning toschool. Chandler Unified School District enforcesa no-nit policy.
