American Education Week/Grandparents Day at SES

Schools throughout the United States will be observing American Education Week during the week of November

17th. The staff and I eagerly invite you to visit your child's teacher on Monday, November 17th, Tuesday, November 18th, and Wednesday, November 19th of that week. We

are proud of our educational program and hope that a day at school will further your knowledge and understanding of

elementary education today.In addition, we are eager to invite our grandparents to visit

the school on Thursday, November 20th or Friday, November 21st. These are magic days at SES. We are

scheduling two days in order to prevent overcrowding and potential parking problems.

SES Students Interview Local CandidatesSudlersville Elementary School students serve as news

anchors on a morning news show. Sudlersville SOARING News airs each morning where the anchors share the

latest happenings at SES. Recently, the students were very fortunate to have some very special guests on their news

program. Candidates running for county offices in this years elections were invited to appear on our news

program. News anchors interviewed the candidates asking questions about where they went to elementary school, what their favorite subject in school was and why they want to be a board member, county commissioner or sheriff. The students had the pleasure of interviewing County Commissioner candidates Phil Duminel, John

Moran, Suzanne Hogan and, Fred McNeil, Sheriff candidate Gary Hoffman and School

Board Candidate John McQueeney.

Sudlersville Elementary School Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

On October 3, 2014, the students participated in an assembly with guests from Rey-Azteca, a mariachi band. Students enjoyed the lively pace and learning about music from another culture. Ms. Angie Soto provided some background information about mariachi bands to help students develop their knowledge. The assembly was sponsored by the SES PTA and was enjoyed by all.

Attendance by Mrs. HamptonPlease realize how important attendance and academic success are to all of us at SES. If a student misses school, he/she misses out. For the most part, students do make-up their work. However, in-school instruction has a positive impact on students. We want all of our little Eagles to SOAR!!!!

Recognitions! Sudlersville Elementary School teachers were among other QACPS teachers who received recognition at the October Board of Education meeting. The prekindergarten and the kindergarten teachers were recognized for the Maryland State Department of Education accreditation and validation process. This recognition certifies that SES has a high quality early childhood program. Congratulations SES !

Sudlersville Elementary School Playground Dedication CeremonyOn September 30, 2014, students, teacher, parents, and community members celebrated the new playground equipment at Sudlersville Elementary School. The students shared safety, organization, active learning, and respect (SOAR) that occurs as they use the playground equipment. Dr. Carol Williamson, QACPS superintendent, and Mrs. Michele Hampton, principal, addressed the students and guests. Commissioner Jim Moran and representatives from Parks and Recreation celebrated with the students at the dedication ceremony. The Department of Natural Resources, Queen Anne's County Parks and Recreation, and the Town of Sudlersville were recognized as project supporters.

Math Night Tricks at SES Students and parents learned math tricks at SES on October

29th. This event was organized by Mrs. Terri Gloyd. Both parents and

students learned strategies for math calculation and problem

solving.

Major Reading Shifts and Parent Tips During parent-teacher conferences, you will hear about three major shifts in our reading framework. First, students will focus on answering text dependent questions through close readings. Text dependent questions require the students to go back in the text to answer them. These questions cannot be answered without the text. When you are reading with your child at home, encourage him or her to go back into the text to answer questions. Ask him or her: “Can you show me where you found that answer?” or “What part of the story shows that?” Students will also often engage in close reading where they will reread a portion of the text to analyze an author’s word choice or a story’s structure. You can have them practice by rereading and discussing a portion of the text. The second change is that students are mostly writing to source. Writing to source means that the students are using text evidence to help them build an opinion or inform others. They will refer directly back to text(s). The three major types of writing that students will focus on in elementary school are opinion or argumentative writing, informative writing and narrative writing. Each of these genres have specific characteristics. All types, however, require the student to clearly introduce their topic or focus, offer clear organization and include supportive details and a concise conclusion. The third major shift is an increased focused on speaking and listening in the classroom. Students will be learning effective speaking and listening skills for not only presentations but daily conversation. Students will collaborate and build upon others’ ideas. They will be developing oral arguments using text support.

Reading Parents can help in many ways. One of the most important tips is to encourage students to read at home. Help your child complete his or her reading log. Ask questions about the texts he or she reads. Have him or her show you the part of the text where the answer is found. Secondly, build in opportunities for your child to write at home from a grocery store list to a narrative about a special family event or trip. You can also help the students complete a reading journal. A reading journal is a notebook where students write about what they are reading. These entries can include adding a page or chapter to a favorite book, writing a letter to the author about a favorite part or creating a character interview. This journal is a fun way to encourage not only writing about also reading! Learn more strategies and tips for reading success at your child’s parent-teacher conference. It has been an exciting two months in Pre-K. Thanks to everyone for their help with our Nursery Rhyme Day. It was a big success. The kids looked great in their costumes and did a wonderful job reciting their nursery rhymes. We have finished our unit on "My Family, My Community". We have begun our new theme on " My Five Senses". Fall is a great time of year to talk to your child about what they see, hear, smell, feel and taste in the world around them. We are looking forward to our trip to Pizza Hut on Friday, November 7th. It will be a wonderful experience to meet more community helpers and use our five senses. Parent teacher conferences will be held on Monday, November 3rd, 5th and 6th for Pre-K. We look forward to meeting and sharing samples of your child's work with you during the conference. If you have not sent back your confirmation slip please make sure you do so. If you have any other questions please feel free to call. In addition, on Tuesday, November 25th, we will be having our Thanksgiving Feast. Please be on the look out for information from our room parents regarding this special event. November has lots in store for second grade. We will be finishing our introductory science unit, learning place value in math, work hard in literacy block and continue to improve on our writing skills.

Our grade will be doing a Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, November 25th. There will be a planning meeting on Wednesday Nov. 12th at 10:30am if you are interested in helping out. Please look for more information coming home soon.

Very cold weather will soon be on its way. Please make sure your child is prepared for outdoor recess with a warm jacket, hats and gloves (labeled with names).

Each second grade teacher will continue intervention cycles in November. Miss Eber will focus on technology, Mrs. Troyer will doing word work and reader’s theater and Ms. Kane will be working on S.T.E.M.

Many of our students have had great attendance so far this year. Kudos to them! If your child does need to miss school, please look for makeup work in the H.W. folder and send it back when complete.

By the way, our field trip to the Natural History Museum in October was fantastic. The students had many great experiences and learned a lot! Thank you to all our chaperones!

Each day in November will be especially packed with learning since it is a “short” month.

The first marking period has gone by quickly! We have been working on "words we need to have in our brains". These words are located on the chart inside of your child's daily folder. We are slowly working our way through the chart. When you read with your child, look for these words in the text. At conferences, your child's teacher will have more suggestions to help promote reading. Remember to label your child's jacket with his/her initials on the inside tag. Thanks so much!

We are continuing to push through our Multiplication Unit. Students are working hard on 2-digit and 3-digit multiplication problems. Please work with your child nightly to ensure that they know their basic facts 1-12. In Social Studies we our finishing our unit on Woodland Indians and early American colonization. We are looking forward to studying Colonial America as it relates to Maryland.I strongly feel that 4th graders are the best. Students are focusing their writing skills on opinion writing and learning how to form proper paragraphs.Keep up the good work 4th graders!!!

Welcome to the third month of school! Thank you for attending your child’s parent conference~ please feel free to keep in contact with us via the agendas if you have any questions or concerns. November 17th begins “American Education Week, 2014.” This year parents will come in based on the letter of their last name. The week will culminate with grandparent’s day on Friday, November 21st, 2014. We look forward to seeing all parents and grandparents. Please make sure to turn in a lunch slip if you or a grandparent plan on eating lunch with your child. Please mark your calendars- the third grade will be taking a field trip to the MD. Science Center in Baltimore on Friday, December 19th, 2014. Look for permission slips to be coming home soon. This is going to be an awesome trip. We began Topic 4~ “multiplication” in Math! Multiplication flash cards can be found in many dollar stores for purchase. Children are expected to have these multiplication facts mastered by fourth grade so any practice that can be completed at home would be appreciated. United Against Bullying...all year long!SES students and staff were shining bright on Unity Day in our new anti-bullying shirts bearing the message: Bullying STOPS With US. Students enjoyed the visit from our “VIP” guests and costumed characters who encouraged all of us to give a “thumbs-up for standing-up” against bullying. Thank you to everyone who has already supported our PBIS fundraiser which reinforces the message that each of us is a unique, valuable individual worthy of respect and compassion. At SES, we celebrate our culturally diverse student population, and we can’t wait to see our multicultural “chain reaction” of kindness displayed in our main hallway! If you have been wondering how to become more personally involved in our efforts to promote and reward positive behavior and increase our community’s multicultural awareness, please join usat an upcoming PBIS Team meeting and/or Multicultural Proficiency Team meeting. We are also still in need of one or two community volunteers to be Character Counts! Coaches for primary grades. Sudlersville Elementary School's PBIS IncentiveThe SES PBIS (positive behavior intervention and supports) incentive for October was to participate in the Book Character/Figure Parade on October 30th. Students participating earned 20 Eagle Bucks. Students were dressed up as their favorite character in a story or book they have read. Students were very creative, and the teachers were too. Students were eager to demonstrate their understanding of the books they had read!
