Colorado Honor Band

Colorado Honor Band has had a long and distinguished history. Our instrumental

ensembles have been in existence in the metropolitan area since 1953 and have

established a reputation for excellence over the past 63 years. The Colorado Hon-

or Band Association has alumni who now are playing in leading symphonies across

the country, community adult bands in the Colorado area, professional jazz groups

and rock bands, working for financial institutions, attending universities, teaching

at universities, working as engineers, and donating their time back to their commu-

nities. Over the past 63 years, our ensembles have performed at International Mu-sic Festivals, World's Fairs, the Colorado Music Educators Association Convention,

and numerous concerts and parades in the Denver Metro Area. Our staff mem-

bers have been nominated to state-level positions and have sponsored festivals in

their respective school districts.

Private instrumental teachers, the Home School Association, and many public

school teachers rank the Colorado Honor Band as one of the best community op-

portunities for young students. We encourage individual achievement and pro-gress, provide experiences through travel, and advocate responsibilities and lead-

ership to aid growth and development. Music is a vital means by which to reach a

universal goal: to enrich one’s life. The directors are supported by a staff of pro-

fessional musicians, teachers, and returning alumni.

Being a Board Member

The CHBA Board of Directors is committed to providing a strong future for

Colorado Honor Band Association. Meeting monthly, Board members work

together to rally community support, strengthen the CHBA family of past

and present student members, and make decisions that will preserve

CHBA’s structural and financial stability.

If you know someone who has a heart for youth instrumental music pro-

grams, a desire to be a part of a nonprofit organization, and would be in-

terested in joining our Board of Directors, please contact our office. Unfortu-

nately, current parents cannot join the board.

Student Board Members

Each year, students apply and interview for the opportunity to be a part of

our Board. The students chosen attend board meetings, assist with events

Costs vary accordingly to your students' participation, however it is cheaper by the

dozen.

For more details visit our website:

https://cohonorband.org/best-music-program/affordable-music-program/

Please also be sure to update all your information with us if it changes!

Dues are payable on or before the 10th of the first month of each semester. Please drop

your envelope in the mail, return it to one of the teachers at your center, pay online through

our website, or bring it to the main office at Historic Grant Avenue. After the 10th of the

month, the unpaid balance will be assessed a 20% late fee unless you communicate with

us! We want to help you as much as we can!

Monthly Band Billing

Near the end of each month, you can expect to receive a billing statement from Colorado

Honor Band. If you have a balance you will receive a bill one month in advance (i.e. you will

receive your February statement at the end of January). Even if you have paid for the semes-

ters tuition you may accumulate a balance.

Upon completion of a given method book or theory book, a student may ask a staff member

or pay a visit to our office upstairs at our Grant Avenue location, and we will provide the next

required book. If we do not receive payment at that time, we will simply bill your account.

We use a computerized billing program to process and email individualized monthly

statements for all members. We also send out email notices from time to time. Please

insure that we have a current email address for you at all times, or you will not receive

all the Colorado Honor Band information you need. If you do not have access to

email, we will put our communications to you in the mail. Please indicate in the ap-

propriate fields on your registration form how you would prefer to receive your monthly

statements and newsletters.

Monthly Band Notes

We send this out in the middle of the month. It has friendly reminders and upcoming

calendar dates. It is to your benefit to read it. We also post it on the website in the

Member Portal section. If you do not receive it from us please tell us because we may

not have a correct email for you, please update your information if this is true.

Program Events

WEEKLY REHEARSALS

Each of CHBA ensembles holds weekly rehearsals year-round. Students in Beginning

and Intermediate Bands may choose to attend any or all of the our weekly classes,

depending on your schedule, at no extra cost to you.

SATURDAY WORKSHOPS

These music intensives include full-band and sectional rehearsals for all ensembles.

Students refine their performance pieces and have an opportunity to socialize and

meet new people. These workshops are particularly important for Beginning and In-

termediate Band students from our various rehearsal centers to play as complete

ensembles.

COMBINED REHEARSALS

These special pre-concert rehearsals are scheduled for Beginning Band and Inter-

mediate Band members only. Like the workshops, these crucial rehearsals bring to-

gether the members of our different rehearsal centers so that they may learn to

play as a full group with their peers in preparation for the Winter, Spring, and Sum-

mer Concerts. These rehearsals meet at our Historic Grant Avenue location.

CONCERTS

Each semester concludes with a concert where all bands will have a chance to

perform. Students learn proper performance etiquette and develop the pride and

self-respect that comes with working hard to produce excellence as an individual

and as a member of a group. Beginning band students must have completed les-

son 6 in order to perform in the winter concert. This is also a great opportunity for

younger students to hear the progression of abilities and their possibilities. We under-

stand that you are busy and that these concerts can be long. However, please

make an effort to stay for the whole concert as it builds community among the

groups. In addition to the two indoor concerts during the school year, CHBA also

hosts an annual Summer Concert Series in the local parks of the Denver-

metropolitan area.

General Information

Student Absence

Parents must call the main office or leave us an email. You do not need to make up a reason.

We have you call so that we know, that you know the student is not at band. If we do not re-

ceive a phone call, students in the Advanced Band and Symphony Winds will lose their chair

after 3 unreported absences.

Student Registration Forms Our Registration form is on our website at: http://cohonorband.org/join/registration. Please fill

out a form for each student that joins our program. We use some of the information on the form

for grants. You only have to complete one per child; however, please keep us informed of any

updates on your information.

Leave of Absence If for any reason you have a conflict and need to be gone for a month or more, please let us

know ahead of time. Terms are September–January, February–May, and June–August. If you do

not let us know ahead of time in writing, you will still be responsible for the monthly dues. Please

put all billing absences and billing questions in writing. The bookkeeper has no idea about your

student’s participation, and sometimes such information is not directly communicated among

staff.

Withdrawal If you wish to discontinue participation with Colorado Honor Band, please send us an email or, if

you receive a hard copy of your bill, write a message on your billing sheet. Please put it in WRIT-

ING. (Hard copy or email)

CHBA Curriculum

ACHIEVEMENT REQUIREMENTS

CHBA is a 4-tiered program, with an appropriate band for any young musician’s

ability level. Students may graduate to each successive level upon completion of

the appropriate achievement requirements. All requirements are detailed in the

CHBA Achievement Requirements Booklet which students will receive in January.

METHOD BOOKS

Students learn to recognize music notation and rhythmic patterns, and they devel-

op in technique and understanding of musical stylization. Method book pages, or

“lessons,” may be performed for approval by staff members on a weekly basis in

fulfillment of participation expectations as well as a student’s completion of

achievement requirements. Specific books used for each instrument are listed in

the Achievement Requirements Booklet. It is the students responsibility to let the

staff know they have a lesson ready to play.

MASTER THEORY BOOKS

This 6-book series introduces the basic music theory behind musical form and com-

position. Students learn how to read bass and treble clef, to count rhythms, to build

musical scales and chords, and to both analyze and compose music. Theory

books with completed lessons may be turned in for grading by staff members on a

regular basis in fulfillment of participation expectations and a student’s completion

of achievement requirements. Each page containing errors must be corrected by

the student until it is 100% correct. Students will receive this book with the Achieve-

ment Requirements Booklet in January.

STUDENT-TO-STUDENT MENTORING PROGRAM

This voluntary mentoring program is open to students in Symphony Winds who are

pursuing the High Honors achievement level in the CHBA curriculum. These stu-

dents must be observed to be good role models and demonstrate leadership and

a dedication to excellence. Mentors are invited to the weekly rehearsal centers to

provide one-on-one music coaching to Beginning and Intermediate Band students.

Please also be sure to update all your information with us if it changes!

Scrip Program

Buy gift cards to your favorite stores and get money into your credit ac-

counts!

Great Lakes Scrip Company contracts with hundreds of retailers to sell their gift cards. They, in turn, sell them to non

-profit organizations, such as CHBA. We buy these gift cards AT FACE VALUE and REDEEM THEM AT FACE VALUE.

Each retailer offers a certain percentage ‘rebate’ (from 2% to 16%). This is where our earned money is collected

into our individual accounts. CHBA will be splitting the percentages earned in an 60-40 split. Your individual ac-

count will receive 60%. CHBA will receive 40% due to the shipping/handling costs of the cards and the banking

expenses.

Contact Nicole Sheeran [email protected] with any questions.
