    MathYour children will be using a mathematics

    program entitled Everyday Math. Thisprogram teaches a brand new concept

    almost every day.

    Included in this program are funactivities which are used to

    help your children grasp thoseconcepts.

    By the end of the first grade

    your children will need to know:

    - How to count to 100 forward and backwards

    - How to add and subtract

    - Basic time and money skills

    - How to count by 2s, 5s and 10s

    - Sequencing of numbers

    Tests are given after each unit in math.Please make sure that your child

    understands the material and PLEASE askus if theres anything we can do to help.

    your children will need to know:

    - Their alphabet

    - How to put the correct amount of

    space in-between words- How to read at least four levels higher

    than they are right now

    - Their vowels

    -Proper punctuation (periods, commas, etc)

    - The Dolch words

    Your child will soonbe given a list of all

    the words that theyneed to know by

    the end of the first

    grade (Dolch BasicSight Words).Though we will goover certain wordsevery week, please

    make sure thatyour child becomes

    familiar with them.

    Many of our children are now reading onlevels A, B and C (where they should be).By the end of the year we would like them

    to be on levels H, I and J.

    Memoirs writing about a memory

    Narrative Account a fictional story

    Every month the childrenwill be given a Book

    Order Form. Return thatform by the date listed onthe back to insure your

    book order. You are notobligated to purchase

    books from Scholastic,but keep in mind that thisis a great way to get yourchildren to read fantastic

    books at low prices!

    If you have not already,

    please send in themandatory $4.00 perchild for their weekly

    Scholastic newspaper.This newspaper is a

    wonderful resource forchildren and

    encourages readingthrough educational,

    fun stories.

    Homework

    At the beginning of everyweek your child

    will have pasted their

    homework assignmentsfor the rest of the weekin their Homework

    Notebook

    Homework is so important

    because it reinforces what they

    have learned in school.

    Please make sure that your child

    does their homework every night.

    When the child has completed theirhomework, please sign either thehomework, or the homework sheet.

    You can leave us notes to if there issomething youre unsure about.

    Homework Folder

    EVERY SINGLENIGHT!

    Your child will be given important noticesdaily which need to be read and

    acknowledged. Every so often there maybe something to fill out. Please do so and

    return to their folder. Their folders are

    checked daily, along with their homework.

    If your child is absent they areresponsible

    for their missed work. Unless they are

    absent at the beginning of the week thereis no excuse for them not doing their

    homework. After all, it is in theirHomework Notebook.

    In any case, make sure they have a friends

    phone number so that, with yourpermission, they may call their friend in

    case they are confused with that evenings

    assignment.

    Lateness and Attendance

    As in any school, attendance is extremely

    important. It is only when your child attends

    school on a daily basis that they can learnwhat they need to know to its full extent.

    If your child needs to be absent for anyreason, please send a signed absent note.If the child has seen any sort of doctor,

    please send that notice to school as well.

    Lateness is severely frowned

    upon. We understand thatthings happen, but when

    your child arrives to school

    late on a daily basis itbecomes a distraction

    and a waste of valuable time.

    Please teach your child about theirresponsibilities. We appreciate it!

    Emergency Phone Numbers

    You have already filled out theimportant Blue Cards given out

    at the beginning of the year.

    These cards are kept on file in case of anemergency or in case we need to reach

    your for ANY reason.

    If you move, or change jobs, or do anythingelse that requires a change to those blue

    cards please notify us immediately of thatchange. You can put the new numbers oraddress in your childs homework folder.

    Holiday Glee Club

    There may be several holidays

    where there will be a holiday concert.

    This concert will be held in theauditorium during the morning hours.

    Letters will be sent home detailing the

    date and time of each concert.

    Please respond with whether or not you can

    attend so we can plan accordingly.

    Discipline Code

    We have five rules in our classroom

    which we enforce daily:

    4. Keep all hands, feet and objects toyourselves.

    5. Raise your hand and wait to be called on.6. Stay in your assigned location at all times

    7. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

    8. Follow directions the first time they are given.
