Overview
AtTheAcademyforActiveLearners,eachchildcontinuouslydevelopsnewskillsandcuriosities.Ourteachersandparentslearnfromeachother,children,environmentandexperiences,tobetterenrichthelivesofallofourstudents.ThefirstthreeyearsarewhatJeanPiaget,Frenchdevelopmentalpsychologist,callsthesensorimotorperiod,whereinfantsandtoddlerslearnthroughsensoryexploration.Theydevelopphysicalandcognitiveskills,andlearnaboutpeopleandobjectsbybecomingfullyinvolvedwiththeirsurroundings.
Ourindoorgymisanexceptionalwayforpreschoolerstoexcelintheirgrossmotorskillsbyplayingonthegymequipment,developingbalance,body/spatialawareness,hand/eyecoordinationandsomuchmore.Eachclassrotatesthroughtheindoorgymdaily,withageappropriategymequipment;infants:softplaystructuresforclimbing/playing,toddlers/preschoolers;playstructures,balancebeams,gamesandmore!Indoorgymequipmentrotatesweekly,focusingondifferentareas,toenablechildrentobuilduponskillstheyareusing.
StructuredCurriculum
Ourcurriculum,“TeachingStrategiesforEarlyChildhood”curriculum(http://www.teachingstategies.com),isalignedwiththeStateofMaine’sEarlyChildhoodGuidelines.Ourteachersmostlyprovidestructure-basedactivitieswithgoalsandobjectivesclearlystatedintheirplanningtoreacheachchildindividually.Eachmonththerearecross-curriculumthemeswithpretendplayactivities,songs,artprojects,role-playing,languageartsandreadingattheage-appropriatelevelforeachclassroom.Weassesschildrendailywithinformalandformalobservationstocompileaportfoliofortheparentstomonitortheirchild’sprogressovertheirtimeatTheAcademy.Weworkonfineandgrossmotorskillsatallages,aswellassocialdevelopment,propercommunicationandconflictresolutionemphasizingbeingagoodfriend.Throughpositiveencouragementandguidance,weassisteachchildingainingpositiveself-esteem,confidenceandindependence.
Ourprogramsprovidemanybenefitsthatotherprogramstonotoffersuchasalowerteacher/childratiothanstateregulationsrequire,largeindoorgym,andextracurricularclasses(music,gym,danceandyogafortoddlersandpreschoolers.

Health&IllnessPolicy
Wedoourbesttokeepyourchildrenhealthywhileinourcare.Unfortunatelyyoungchildrengetsick.Wedorequirepaymentoftuitionevenwhenchildrenmaybekepthomeorsenthomeduetoillness.Ifachildrequiresprescriptionorover-the-countermedication,theMedicationPermissionFormmustbecompleted.TheDepartmentofHealth&HumanServicesregulationsprohibittheadmittanceofanychildintoachildcarecenterthatexhibitsanyofthefollowingsymptoms:
• Fever(100°forhigher)–childmustbefeverfreefor24hourswithouttheaidofmedication
• Diarrhea–childmustbesymptomfreefor24hourswithouttheaidofmedication(after3diarrheabm’syourchildwillneedtobecaredforathome)
• Vomiting–childmustbesymptomfreefor24hourswithouttheaidofmedication
• Runnynosewithcoloreddischarge(checkwithdoctorandnotereturned)• Rash(checkwithdoctorandnotereturned)• Dischargefromeyesorears(checkwithdoctorandnotereturned)• Lice–childneedstobetreatedandnitsremovedbeforereturn• Communicablediseases–chickenpox,measles,mumps,conjunctivitis(pink
eye),influenza,etc.Thechildmayreturnwhentheincubationandcontagiousperiodhaspassedandthechildiswellenoughtoresumenormalchildcareactivities,accompaniedwithadoctor’snote.
Illnesswhileinourcare:ifyourchildbecomesillwhileatourcenter,parentsandemergencycontactswillbecalledandyourchildwillneedtobepickedupwithinthehour.Duringthistime,yourchildmaybecaredforoutsideoftheirclassroom.Emergency-Incaseofemergency,parents,child’sdoctorand/orambulancemaybecalledaccordingly.ParentsarerequiredtocompletetheAuthorizationtoTreatMinorformandChild’sPhysicalHealthStatusform.

Meals&SnacksTheAcademyprovideshealthy,nutritiousandage-appropriatebreakfastandafternoonsnacks(includingfruit,pancakes,waffles,eggs,cereal,yogurt,applesauce,vegetables,grahamcrackers,andmilk.)ParentshavethechoicetoprovidelunchfortheirchildrendailyinalunchboxwithicepackorparticipateinourHealthyLunchProgramfor$20/wkperchild.Menuscanbeprovided.Weincorporatemanyvegetablepureesinourrecipestosneakmorenutritionintotheirmeals.**Ifyourchildhasspecialdietaryrequirements,wewillworkwithyoutomeettheirneeds.Ifyouneedtocontrolyourchild’sfoodintakemoreclosely,feelfreetoprovidebreakfastandsnackalso.
Nut-FreeFacilityDuetoincreasingamountoffoodallergies,ourcenterisanut-freefacility;thisincludesbothpeanutsandtreenuts.WewanttoprotectanychildrenthatmaycometoTheAcademywithaseverenutallergy,inordertodothiswehavetokeepanyfoodproductsthatcontainormayhavebeenmanufacturedwithnutsoutofourbuilding.Thisistoinsurethattheoilsthatcomefromnutsdonottouchanysurfacesthatachildwithanutallergymaycomeintocontactwith.Therearealotofnut-freeoptionsouttherethatkidslove!
Playground/GymPolicy
Eachclassroomwillhaveaminimumofonehourofoutsideplayincorporatedintotheirdailyschedule,weatherpermitting.Ourteachershavecreativelythreadednatureandelementsoftheoutsideenvironmentintotheircurriculumandweeklythemes.Notonlywillouroutsideplaytimehavealotofphysicalactivity,butwillalsocreatealearningenvironmentwherechildrenmaybewateringtheirplantsorlearningmoreaboutseasons,insectsandweather.Winterweather/snowdays:Wedonotfollowpublicschoolclosings.Ourstafflivefairlyclose-bysothatwemaybeopenforparentsthatdostillneedtoattendwork,andwewillonlycloseifthemainroadsareunsafetodriveon.Wewillplanonoutsideplayfortemperaturesabove25°Fandwillremindparentstosendinappropriateweathergear,(snowpants,boots,mittensandhatsinwinter.)Theindoorgymhassoftplaytoysandequipment,targetingdifferentskillsandbuildinguponthem.Classroomsspendbetween30-90minutesinthegymdaily,dependingonagegroupandoutsideweather.Allclassroomswillberotatedthroughthegymtwiceon
dayswheretheweatherdoesnotallowustogooutside.
Discipline
Weusepraiseandcreatepositiveredirectionasourmainformofdisciplineandguidance,andwealsoaddresstheunwantedbehaviorsdirectlytoensurethechildrenunderstandwhichbehaviorsareacceptable.Ourteachersareexcellentcommunicatorsandarealwayssearchingforwaystoshowchildrenhowtoproperlycommunicatetheirfeelings/need,tolessentheamountofphysicalconfrontationsthatmayoccur.Webelieveinusing“Istatements”;“I’msadbecauseshetookmytoy.”Wefindthatrepetitionandconsistencywiththesestatementsishelpfulforchildrentoexpresswhatitisthattheymaybefeelingandwhy,andthencreatesaplatformforconflictresolutionskillstobuild.Theseskillsstartrathersimplistically,andasthechildbecomesmoreintunewiththeirfeelingsandenvironment,the“Istatements”andtheconflictresolutionprocessbecomesmorecomplex.Wedonotuseanytypeofphysicaldiscipline,corporalpunishment,orhumiliationasaformofdiscipline.Weapproacheachsituationasalearningopportunityandarecommittedtodoingsoinapositivemanner.Wealsoencourageandteachsignlanguageinouryoungerclassroomstoassistwithcommunicatingtheirneedswhenlanguagehasnotbeenbuiltyet.
NegativeBehaviorPolicySafetyisourprimaryconcernatTheAcademy.Moreserious,unwantedbehaviorswillbehandledwithclosecommunicationbetweentheteachersandtheparents/guardiansofthechild/childreninvolved.IncidentreportswillbecompletedasneededandparentswillbeaskedtomeetwiththeDirectorandstafftodiscussbehaviormodificationplansasappropriate.Iftherearebehaviorssoextremeandthatthechild’sbehaviorisnotimproving,theparentsmaybenotifiedwithorwithouttwoweeksnotice,thatTheAcademymaynolongerprovidecareforthestudent.Biting:Althoughbitingiscommonlyseeninyoungchildrenformanyreasons,itisnotanacceptablebehavior.Wewillworkwithfamiliestodetermineacourseofaction,whichmayincludeusingchew/bitingtoysthatthechildmaycarrywiththem,havingateachershadowthechildthathasbittentoensurethattheotherchildrenaresafeandunharmedagain;preventionandearlyinterventioniskey.Directlyfollowinganincident,thechildrenwillbeseparatedandthechildthatwasbittenwillbetendedtoimmediately.Bothparentsofchildreninvolvedwillbecalledtonotifythemofthesituation.Theteacherand/ordirectorwillspeakwiththeparentstodiscussadetailedplanofactiontoeliminatethebehavior.Parentsmaybeaskedtocomeandpickupthechildifthebehaviorisnotimprovingandalternativeresources/educationalsettingsmaybediscussedtodeterminethebestsupportandplacementforthechild.Childrenmaybereleasedfromourcareiftheproblempersists.
AdditionalInformationBabysitting&ParentsNightOut
Inordertokeepourparent/teacherrelationshiponaprofessionallevel,weaskparentsdonotsolicitourstaffforbabysittingorchildcareoutsideofTheAcademy.Wedoofferhowever,“ParentsNightOut”oncepermonthforchildrenenrolledatourcenteronly.WewillhaveourstaffavailableatthecenteronaFridayevening(6:30-10pm),wherewewillhavefungamesandcrafts,dinnerandamoviebeforetheyarepickedup.Thiswillbeofferedonafirstcomefirstservebasisandspacewillbelimited.
OpenDoorPolicyOurdoorsarealwaysopentoparentsthroughoutthedaytoobservetheirchildrenandourlearningenvironment.Ifyouneedtocommunicatewithyourchild’steacherorourdirector,feelfreetospeakwithusinperson,calloremailtosetupanappointmentasneededformoredetailedissues.Weaskthatparentsdonotusesocialnetworking(suchasFacebookorTwitter)asaformofcommunicationorconnectionwithourstaff.TheAcademyforActiveLearnershasafanpagethatparentsmay“Like”oraddasafriend,inordertofolloweventsorseeupdatedphotos.
MandatedReporterPolicyTheAcademyforActiveLearnersstaffarerequiredbyMainelawtoreportanyinstancesofsuspectedchildabuse,neglectordomesticviolence.Ourfirstconcernischildsafety,andifwesuspectachildhasbeensubjecttoabuse,wewillfileareporttoauthorities.Thestaffmemberwillbringtheirconcernstothedirectoranddiscussthesituationandthedirectorwillnotifytheauthorities(DepartmentofHealthandHumanServicesand/orChildProtectiveServices.)Thedirectormayalsoinformparentswhenareportismade,exceptinthecaseofreportingsuspectedsexualabuse,inaccordancewithStateofMaineguidelines.Itisimportantforteachersandstafftodocumentconcernsthattheyhaveorcertainsituationsthatarisewithparentsandchildrenthatseemsomewhatoutoftheordinaryinordertotrackpatternsand/orfrequencyofincidents.Forexample,theremaybearecurringissuewhenacertainparentdrops-offorpicks-upachild,etc.Documentingconcerns(evenminor),isouronlywaytotrackincidentsandensureconsistencyevenamongstteachersandstaff.Teachersshouldalwaysfeelfreetospeakopenlywithourdirectorregardinganyconcernsandfeelcomfortabletoreportdirectlyifthesituationcallsforit.Weareallhereforthesafetyandwell-beingofthechildren.
OurStaffWebelieveinhiringoneducationandexperiencedteachersthatarecommittedtotheearlychildhoodfield.EachclassroomhasaleadteacherthatmustobtainaBachelor’sDegreeinEducationorcloselyrelatedfieldplus4yearsexperiencewiththe0-5agegroup.Co-teachersmusthavecompletedatleast18unitsofcollegecreditsaswellas4yearsexperiencewiththe0-5agegroup.Allofourstaffarerequiredtohaveup-to-dateFirstAid/CPRCertificationsandregisterwithMaineRoadstoQualitytotracktheireducationandexperienceontheircareerpath.
Alcohol/Substance/Smoking/Firearms/PetPolicyThecenterprohibitstheuseofalcohol,theuseorpossessionofillegalsubstancesorunauthorizedpotentiallytoxicsubstances,firearms,pelletorBBguns(loadedorunloaded)inthecenter,parkinglot,oronfacilitygrounds.Thispolicyextendstoanycenter-sponsoredevents.Thefacility,buildingsandgroundsareconsideredtobe“SmokeFree.”Smokingisnotallowedinthebuilding,playgroundorparkinglot(includingpersonalvehicles,entrances,orwalkways.)Individualswhosmokemustdosoofftheproperty.Ifaparent,guardianorotherauthorizedadultarrivestopickupachildandappearsintoxicatedorundertheinfluenceandexhibitsbehaviorsuchasslurredorincoherentspeech,difficultywalkingorotherunusualbehaviorsthatmayindicateuseofdrugsand/oralcohol,orodorssuchasalcohol,marijuana,orothersubstancesarenotedbystaff.Staffmayrequesttheparentorguardianseekanalternativeformoftransportation.Thelocalpolicewillbecontactedtointerveneifnecessary.Safetyofourchildrenisourutmostconcern.Animalsarenotallowedinthefacilityoronthefacilitygroundsduetoriskofillnessessuchassalmonella,riskofinjury,orhealthriskduetoallergicindividuals.
