Head Teachers Report
CF’s report can be found in Appendix 2. In addition, CF reported on:
a) work carried out in the previous school term by the council with regards costs for improving the schools dining and gym facilities which are approximately £400,000. Whilst moneys for this are unlikely to be forthcoming, CF would like to keep this on the agenda with regards discussing ways of fundraising, for example, through the Lottery and matched funding from Sports Scotland. DC suggested that time at a future PC meeting should be set aside to allow for discussion, this was agreed. CH asked if representatives from the Pupil Council could be invited which was agreed. Further discussions were had around solutions to the current lack of space in the dining hall for lunch. CF advised that the schools Senior Management Team were aware of the problem and would be exploring options including, eating pack lunches in the classrooms with supervision and introducing a ticket system.
b) The school Improvement Plan (Appendix 3)
DC
PTA Report LH reported that new members had been recruited and that they were currently looking at ways of engaging with parents as support for many of the adult events had been dropping off. Between £10, 000 and £12,000 is raised annually and this year they are intending to raise funds through a variety of events including; discos; family photograph day;
2
Christmas Fayre, in particularly selling cards designed by the children themselves; and a ‘Carolside’s got talent event’. Any other suggestion would be gratefully received through the PTA website, and again involvement at PTA meetings by representatives of the Pupil Council would be welcome. Lastly a reminder to support the PTA by buying school uniform items through Academy Uniforms, the next opportunity at the school will be on the 17th and 18th November.
Correspondence DC reported one item, an invitation from the Scottish Parent Teacher Council to become members. As it is unclear what the benefits would be this will be declined
AOCB 1. DC suggested allocating PC funds to the school as usual, this was agreed.
2. DC reported that the wind turbine installation is delayed until the October break.
3. DC reported that a bid for £10,000 for an activity trail had been submitted by CF, however no response had been received.
4. LA thanks the School SMT for improved playground security around pick up and drop off times as there is a higher degree of visibility for both parents and children, and felt that the ‘marshalling’ of the area by the school janitor had helped with some of the parking issues.
5. CR asked what sub groups would be carried forward. It was agreed that; i. the Sports and Communications sub group were no longer necessary. ii. the PLP would become the Homework subgroup and involve CH, LN
and LA. iii. the Healthy Eating / dining hall space issues would be more fully
discussed at October / Novembers Parent Council meeting with representatives from the Pupil Council.
iv. FC will organise a meeting of the Traffic subgroup after CH suggested that Clarkston Community Council and the Pupil Council could be approached to find ways to apply pressure for traffic control measures including line painting, bumps and pavement bollards.
DC FC

HEAD TEACHER’S REPORT
Tuesday 28th
September 2010
HT thanked Mrs Fiona Cowan for carrying out her duties as Chairperson so superbly over the
past year and added that she had very much enjoyed working with her. Mrs Frew wished Mr
David Coyne the very best of luck as he starts his role as the new Chairperson for this session
and is looking forward to working with him.
Building
New boiler house doors have been fitted recently and also two new internal doors.
We have requested that a new wall is built in the infant playground to replace the broken kerb stones that are there.
In the summer two new Promethean Boards were fitted in classrooms – one was purchased by the PTA and the other from the school budget.
Two hundred and eight folding and stacking chairs have been purchased for the dining room by the school. Some of the money was taken from school fund using profits made from our Summer Show and the remainder came from the school budget. The chairs will be used for events and functions held in the school. We hope to look at the cost of folding tables at some point.
Staffing Changes
We have welcomed 13 new staff members to the school this session, including Mrs Harker and Mrs Connick our new DHTs.
Mrs Taylor, Mr Fee and three members of the office staff are currently on long term absence.
We have three students in school this term with two more students starting after the October break.
Curriculum and School News Our roll has increased this year and we have 702 pupils in the school and 110 so far in the nursery. The report from the Follow Through Inspection has not yet been received. There were many
positive comments made and also a number of areas to be addressed. A parents’ leaflet will be sent home in due course.
There will be an unannounced inspection of the Nursery, undertaken by the Care Commission, any time after 8th October. A number of nursery parents will be issued with a questionnaire and an on line self-assessment is due to be completed in preparation for the inspection. Care commission inspection results will form the basis of the nursery’s improvement plan.
Elected children have all been enjoying their new roles in Committees including Pupil Council, Eco Committee and Health and Wellbeing Committee. We have also appointed Playleaders who support our youngest children in the playground. We are grateful to all pupils who undertake extra citizenship duties.
In the nursery staff are developing child and parent led planning.
We are ready to set up a programme of workshop/discussion forums, based on requests from nursery parents through their parental questionnaire issued today.
The nursery and school will be looking for opportunities to further develop partnerships with businesses and community groups.
Over the year we will be evaluating and monitoring new teacher/pupil ratio in P1 which is currently 1 to 16.
Our new DHTs are currently working in consultation with pupils and staff on behaviour in school
