Paradise is recognized as being Atlantic Canada’s fastest growing municipality with the youngest average-aged population in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Located adjacent to the major centres in the Province, including the Capital City of St. John’s and neighbouring City of Mount Pearl, is just one of the many reasons that attribute to their rising popularity. They are on the doorstep of the Trans-Canada Highway and Outer Ring Road, with St. John’s International Airport and port facilities just minutes away. An energetic Town of 18,000 that is experiencing substantial and sustainable growth – Paradise is the place where opportunity abounds for retail, commercial and industrial enterprises seeking a solid base.

According to Rodney Cumby, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Paradise, the Town offers a rare opportunity that combines value, quality, excellent location and excep-tional future potential. “Offshore oil, manufacturing, construction, tourism, trucking and retail opera-tions have already set down roots in Paradise. The Town is home to busi-nesses in a diverse range of indus-tries who are realizing the countless benefits of setting up shop in Para-dise,” said Cumby.

Paradise is excited to bring new op-portunities and employment to their area, so earning business is very im-portant to them. They offer a three-year, 50 per cent annual business tax incentive for any company establish-ing in the Town, as long as it does not compete with an existing business.

“Paradise offers a strong business infrastructure and available workforce. With Paradise’s central

location, your business can easily draw both potential employees and consumers from Paradise and

surrounding communities.”

“Paradise is a community poised for growth. We are positioned to take

advantage of the emerging economy. As a Council we understand how important it is that we support new business. You can expect to find knowledgeable staff with a ‘can-do’ attitude that push to meet your competitive business needs. That means

a business-friendly environment with less red tape”

Ralph Wiseman • Mayor, Town of Paradise

“Now is the time to invest in Para-dise. You will find prime land and excellent locations for your retail or commercial establishment, offering significant value for your financial investment.” Cumby said. “Paradise has available fully-serviced commer-cial and industrial land that will suit your needs, whatever they may be. Our commercial areas are already well established with much interest from companies looking to expand or locate in the North East Avalon area.”

There are several strategically-placed industrial parks available. The Town recently signed a deal for Phase Three of the Octagon Pond Business Park. Ideally located to take part in the booming offshore sector, this de-velopment is already commenced and will see a further 90 acres of indus-trial and commercial land developed. Paradise has the available locations to provide plenty of room for a business to execute its most ambitious plans.

The significance of the oil indus-try for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador means many students are choosing programs with this in-dustry in mind. Furthermore, many people in the Province are currently working within the oil and gas sector and already possess industry specific knowledge.

There were over 900 new homes built in Paradise over the past two years and it continues to attract families to call Paradise home. “One of the big advantages is that we offer the best of urban and com-munity living. Parents don’t have to worry about sacrificing the con-venience and excitement of living in a major urban area for a neigh-bourly environment in which to raise their children. In Paradise, you are in the middle of everything, just minutes away from the capital city. Residents have easy access to

work, shopping, recreational and cultural attractions, hospitals and educational institutions.” states Cumby.

Indeed the Town of Paradise is a vi-brant, growing community with an excellent location and a bright fu-ture. From businesses entrenched in Canada’s offshore oil industry to exciting new commercial and retail ventures – Paradise offers so much – including the charm of New-foundland warm and welcoming culture. •

The Town is also very committed to providing an excellent quality of life to its residents and businesses. The Town has invested heavily into walking areas around Octagon Pond and Neil’s Pond and into developing recreational facilities and programs. In 2012 construction for a new $21 Million arena will commence as well as the development of new parks. These new initiatives will make Paradise a better place to live, work and grow. Why does workers’ compensation seem so difficult and daunting to employers? With the new initiatives and policies that have been implemented over the last decade, you would think it would be much easier for employers to effectively manage workers’ compensation claims. But in reality, many organizations are struggling with getting injured employees back to work in a safe and timely manner.

To get more information, we caught up with Dallas Mercer, President of Dallas Mercer Consulting (DMC), a company that has spent the last 10 years finding solutions to workers’ compensation issues for employers.

Q. So what exactly is it you do at DMC? A. Essentially, we act as our clients’ virtual workers’ compensation department. We have no other focus than to micromanage their claims to resolution. In a nutshell, we apply our comprehensive knowledge of policies and legislation to direct the management of claims and we hold workers’ compensation accountable for decisions that are made.

Q. Who works at DMC? A. Our team consists of 18 professionals with a combined 120 years of experience in the workers’ compensation and safety fields. We also have a physiotherapist

and an occupational therapist on staff that provide advice and guidance on difficult cases. Our team of disability managers have a skill set that would be impossible for employers to replicate within their own organizations.

Q. Why do employers hire you? A. Well, Ches Penney said, “Workers’ compensation is not a place for amateurs”. It is intended to be a self-reliant system, meaning employers are responsible for managing their own claims. Unfortunately the knowledge and expertise required to do so is something few employers have. And of course, we have a proven track record for resolving issues that significantly impact the bottom line!

Q. Is hiring DMC cost-effective? A. Absolutely! DMC has over 240 clients throughout Canada and when employers see our results they quickly recognize our value. Perhaps a client of ours, Connie Adams at Cablelync, summed it up best. She said, "We first made contact with DMC after a great deal of frustration in trying to work with WHSCC ourselves. DMC’s assistance on these claims has been absolutely instrumental in achieving the ultimate outcome – claims that are now closed! For this, we have immense gratitude and appreciation for DMC and would highly recommend DMC’s services to all companies. It is a necessary and worthwhile investment!"
