WALTER SCOTT’S

WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...

KRISTEN STEWART

I am a new fan of singer Ed Sheeran. What can you tell

me about him? When will he be

performing in America?

—Dean B., Sante Fe, N.M.

A: The British singer-songwriter, whose 2014 album x (pronounced “multiply”) reached No. 1 in 14 countries, was born in Halifax, England. Since signing with Atlantic Records in 2011, Sheeran, 24, has sold millions of singles and albums. “Thinking Out Loud” and “Don’t” were Top 10 hits in the U.S. and “I See Fire” was featured in the 2013 movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. He’ll be bringing his show to

numerous North American cities in September, including a

Sept. 26 gig with Beyoncé, Pearl Jam and Coldplay at the Global Citizen Fes-tival—which raises funds and awareness for a more sustainable planet—in New York City’s Central Park (globalcitizen.org).

Q: What has Paget Brewster been doing since leaving Criminal Minds? The show isn’t the same without her.—Emily M., New Haven, Conn.

A: Brewster left her role as FBI agent Emily Prentiss on the CBS series Criminal Minds because she “didn’t feel challenged anymore.” She found that excite-ment when she joined the sixth season of Com-munity (streaming on Yahoo Screen) as Frankie Dart, an administrative consultant brought in to help shape up the school. “Community is a thrilling, hilarious show,” says Brewster, 46.“This is jumping into the deep end of the pool.”

Jocks Score on Big ScreenLebron James is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. But this summer

he proved he’s also a talented actor, stealing his scenes in the Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck. Here are more athletes who’ve found Hollywood fame.

QYou play Phoebe, the girlfriend of Jesse Eisenberg’s character, in American Ultra. What about the movie intrigued you? “It’s a spectacularly broad comedy, but it’s also grounded in a very sweet, genuine love story: Two unassuming stoner kids are thrown into, like, the Bourne Supremacy and turn into sleeper-cell-like agents fi ghting for their lives. It’s crazy.”Did you like doing your own stunts? “As much as I can. I am defi nitely not a wimp. I didn’t entirely realize: Action movies hurt. You have to be down to take a hit. I went home with some serious bruising—and by the way, that’s the best. I would literally go home and be, ‘Check it out.’”Are you pleased with the life you’ve chosen? “At my age, people are just trying to fi gure out what they want to do, and I’ve been reaping the benefi ts for so long from a decision I made as a tiny kid. I feel like I got such a head start on the game. I want to keep running.” What are you passionate about? “I love writing poetry. It’s my favorite thing to do. I’m trying to push that into what I also love, which is fi lmmaking.”

Even though Kristen Stewart is best known for her role as Bella Swan in Twilight, the

Los Angeles native has been acting in movies since she was 10. Following last year’s critically acclaimed drama Still Alice, Stewart, 25, lightens things up in the action-comedy American Ultra, in theaters Aug. 21.

‘Friday Night’A er its publication in 1990, it didn’t take long for Friday Night Lights: A Town,

a Team, and a Dream by Pulitzer Prize-winning author H.G. (Buzz) Bissinger to graduate from best-selling sensation to classic. The non ction account of the winningest high school football team in Texas history, Odessa’s Permian Panthers, has been called the best football book of all time. And its impact stretched far beyond sports and literature. It inspired a 2004 movie and two TV series, and a new 25th anniversary edition (Da Capo Press) features an a erword with the author’s account of his recent reunion with members of the 1988 team—and updates on what they went on to do a er the glow of the Friday night lights faded.

CAREER KICKOFF For its talented TV cast, Friday Night Lights was the start of even greater success.

Attach this Lions Clear Eyes Metal Sign to any wall to give yourself a dose of the TV show’s winning philosophy ($60).

1988 Journalist Buzz Bissinger arrives in Odessa, Texas, to follow the Permian Panthers in their pursuit of a fi fth state championship.

1990 Bissinger’s book is a hit every-where except Odessa, where residents are stung by its unfl inching depiction of their sports-obsessed town.

1993 Discovering that Lights had been optioned for a movie, NBC premieres Against the Grain, a short-lived TV series inspired by the book and starring a young Ben Affl eck.

1998 Director Alan Pakula, tapped to helm the feature fi lm, dies. After two more directors miss the mark, Bissinger’s cousin, director Peter Berg,

takes on the project.

2002 Sports Illustrated ranks FNL the fourth-greatest sports book ever written.

2004 The movie, starring Billy Bob Thornton as coach Gary Gaines and Connie Britton as his wife, Sharon, is a hit.

2006 A second NBC-TV series, adapted from the movie and also directed by Berg, premieres to critical raves and a small but dedicated audience.

2011 The series ends after winning a locker full of awards, including an Emmy for Kyle Chandler as coach Eric Taylor.

TIMELINE

For anyone who thinks you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, Berloni would off er Mimi and Marco as exhibits A and B to the contrary. “Like us, dogs learn new things every day,” he says. “Although like me,” he jokes, “they sometimes forget.”

From Cage to StageTraining rescue dogs for the stage and screen is hardly a new trick for Berloni. He’s been doing it since 1976 when, as a 19-year-old actor at a regional theater in Connecticut, he was asked to fi nd a dog to play Sandy in Annie, a new musical based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip. On his day off , he visited shelters, meeting dozens of abandoned pets. “I was profoundly moved,” he recalls. “I never knew society treated dogs so badly.”

Toward the end of the day, he came across a scrawny mutt sitting in the shadows who was scheduled to be put to sleep the next day. e nameless young stray was so terrifi ed of people that attendants had to use a rope to get him out of his cage. ey believed he had been abused. Berloni, on a hunch, bought him for $7 and took him home.

Based on his experiences growing up with a beloved collie, Berloni fi gured that the key to training Sandy, as he named the stray, was building trust. So he took him to work, where he was helping build stage sets, and began to gain Sandy’s confi dence. Gradually, he introduced him to the cast and crew. It’s their next-to-last performance of e Audience, a Broadway hit starring the actress Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II. e two corgis might lack Dame Mirren’s regal presence or box-offi ce draw, but they’ve been undeniable crowd pleasers. Mimi and Marco may be among Broadway’s most unlikely stars. Only last fall they were all but homeless, given up by an owner who could no longer care for them. A rescue group took them in, but their prospects for fi nding a permanent home were slim. With Mimi pushing age 10 and Marco just a year younger, they were hardly the

frisky pups most people want to adopt. en Bill Berloni came into their lives.

e Tony Award-winning animal trainer brought them home and worked with them for several months. Soon they were on Broadway—fi ve nights a week plus three matinees.

To get Sandy to perform his role, Berloni relied on positive reinforcement—and strategically placed treats. When Sandy ran to Annie on stage, the dog knew she would have

a tasty morsel hidden in her hand for him. e following year, Annie moved to

Broadway. So did Berloni, Sandy and the young actress who played Annie, Andrea McArdle. Sandy would spend the next seven years on Broadway, playing alongside fi ve diff erent Annies in more than 2,300 performances. Berloni had found a career. Today, he still marvels at his luck. “It’s all because I rescued a dog,” he says.

Working Like a DogIt’s less than 30 minutes to show time, and Berloni is warming up Mimi and Marco in the wings, while Sadie Sink, an actress who plays Elizabeth as a girl, takes her chair onstage. On cue, the corgis race over and leap onto her lap. She slips them their favorite treat, mozzarella cheese, and nuzzles them aff ectionately. ey’re ready for another show. If Berloni owes a debt to an abandoned dog, it is one he has

repaid many times. Consider Chico, a Chihuahua he adopted from a New Jersey shelter and trained for a major role in Legally Blonde: e Musical. Or Argyle, a rescued collie he trained for the Broadway production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. (Argyle got his name from eating socks, a habit his original owners apparently grew tired of, especially after paying for two surgeries to have them removed.)

Finding a dog with star potential is part art and part science. Aside from their breed and coloring, “I look for dogs who

are dealing with the stress of the shelter,” Berloni says. “If a dog can deal with that, they will be calm in a home situation and good for the stage.”

Soon after e Audience closes, Berloni will head to Chicago to check out a pair of 10-year-old cairn terriers living with a rescue group there. If they pass the audition, they may fi nd themselves sharing the coveted role of Toto, Dorothy’s feisty terrier, in e Wiz Live!, NBC’s live TV musical,

Roxie, Rocco, Chico, Lilla, Trixie, Minnie and Romeo with trainer Bill Berloni (left). Corgis Marco and Mimi attempt to upstage co-star Helen Mirren in The Audience, (above). Berloni works with Bowdie, who plays Winn-Dixie, (above right), and the original Sandy from Annie (right), from Berloni’s book, Broadway Tails (Lyons Press).

Dec. 3. at will make two in a row for Berloni, who also trained Bowdie, a standard poodle mix, who played Nana in NBC’s Peter Pan Live! last December. Bowdie’s performance may be the fi rst time a real animal played the role, which is usually played by an actor in a dog costume. With a live TV audience in the millions, that was a gamble, but, Berloni says, “the dog was fl awless.”

Indeed, Bowdie may be the leader of Berloni’s pack these days. He has the main role in a musical version of the book Because of Winn-Dixie that Berloni and his wife, Dorothy, have staged in several cities and are hoping to bring to Broadway in 2016. If that happens, it will be one of the rare occasions when a dog has the title role in a Broadway show.

When Bowdie isn’t acting, he lives the life of a normal dog on the Berlonis’ farm in Higganum, Conn., along with about 30 fellow canines. Most work on stage, on the big or small screen or in advertising. Some, like Mikey, another longtime Sandy, are retired from show biz and just enjoying their golden years. As if that wasn’t enough animal companionship, the Berlonis also have a menagerie that includes two horses, a donkey, a pony, a llama, two pigs and three ducklings.

After spending most of his life in the wings, Berloni has recently found himself in the limelight on From Wags to Riches, a Discovery Family Channel reality series airing ursday nights. Among its revelations: e Berlonis sometimes sleep with as many as nine dogs! “ ey’re welcome as long as they don’t try to hog the bed,” he says.

ough he started out as an actor, Berloni seems happy to let his dogs enjoy the oohs and aahs. “I’m hoping they’ll be the focus of the show,” he says. “ e animals are the stars, not us.”

His main reason for doing From Wags to Riches, Berloni says, is to call attention to the huge numbers of wonderful dogs in the nation’s shelters, just waiting for someone to come along and take them home. When people admire his own dogs, he’s fond of pointing out their humble origins. “ ey’ll say how lovely the dogs are, and I’ll say, ‘You could have adopted them the day before I did!’”

Discovery Channel’s From Wags to Riches, airing in“Pawgust,” stars Dorothy, Jenna and Bill Berloni and the menagerie of stars that make up William Berloni’s Theatrical Animals.

places & things that make America unique.

“TED is Christmas morning for the mind,” says Richard Saul Wurman, 80, whose curiosity about the convergence of technology, entertainment and design (i.e., TED) back in 1984 led to the fi rst TED conference.

irty years later, more than 1,800 TED talks (ted.com) have been viewed 2.5 billion times, on topics from bionic limbs to body language. (Wurman sold TED to the nonprofi t Sapling Foundation in 2001; since then, local TEDx events also have sprung up ).

“Google was announced there; the Macintosh computer was fi rst seen there,” Wurman says. “ ere was that American spirit about it.”

Brené Brown, sociologist and author of the Aug. 25 release Rising Strong (Random House) whose 2010 TED talk on the power of vulnerability hit 20 million views, says TED is uniquely American: “It’s about being asked to do something uncomfortable in the service of curiosity and conversa-tion—not in the service of your work, of money, of politics or of religion.” —Kathleen McCleary

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant

Send questions to marilyn @ parade.com

Say four people are drawing straws for a prize. My friends and I agree that the first person to draw has a 1 in 4 chance of getting the short straw. However, if he or she does get it, the second person’s chances drop to zero. And if the first person doesn’t get the short straw, the second person’s chances increase to 1 in 3, and so on. Our disagreement: Is it better to draw first, last, or does it make any difference?

—Nancy P., Newport, N.H.

The order makes no difference. Envision all four people drawing straws, but instead, not looking at them yet. At this point, each person has a straw. Does it help to be the first or last one to look? No.
