‘The Gatekeepers’Filmmaker Dror Moreh interviews all surviving former heads of Shin Bet - the Israeli security agency whose activities and membership are closely held state secrets. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 - 97 minutes)
Stan: This compelling documentary, an Oscar® nominee in the Best Documentary category for this year’s awards, captures the fervor of commitment by the interviewees of the Israeli security agency to protect its citizens from acts of terrorism including collateral citizen deaths and ally relationships, while simultaneously giving the viewers the enormity of the decisions that are constantly made on a regular basis. This reviewer was reminded of what the decision making process must have been like for our President and his team to arrive at a ‘go’ for the clandestine mission involving Osama Bin Laden and the repercussions from our own allies.(Grade: B)
‘The Last Exorcism: Part II’*Ashley Bell plays a woman who is found terrified and alone in rural Louisiana. Just as she begins the difficult process of starting a new life, the evil force that once possessed her is back with other, unimaginably horrific plans that mean her last exorcism was just the beginning. (PG-13 - 100 minutes)

‘The Frankenstein Theory’Timothy V. Murphy plays a disgraced college professor who leads a documentary film crew to the rim of the Arctic Circle in a desperate effort to vindicate his academic reputation and prove that Mary Shelley’s literary classic “Frankenstein” is, in fact, a work of non-fiction disguised as fantasy. Playing exclusively at AMC Arizona Center 24. (NR - 87 minutes)
Joseph: “The Frankenstein Theory” spends too much time on the “theory” and not enough time on the “Frankenstein.” That is to say that writer/director Andrew Weiner’s new found-footage flick, which was produced by “The Last Exorcism” creators Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland, has a magnificently monstrous finale but the boring build-up is so bulky that viewers very well may lose interest long before arriving at that aforementioned action-packed part. Having said that, Weiner’s project earns points for exploring a relatively original idea rather than re-visiting the same old supernatural song and dance. Plentiful potential and excellent execution is two very different things, though. (Grade: D)
‘The Lost Medallion’Billy Unger and Sammi Hanratty play two teenage friends who uncover a long-lost medallion and accidentally wish themselves back in time. The experience gives them a new understanding of who they are and what their lives really mean. (PG - 100 minutes)
Joseph: “The Lost Medallion” is a faith-based family flick that, unlike most movies of its genre, conceals its religious roots remarkably well. In fact, writer/director Bill Muir conceals them perhaps even too well as one would have to make a lot of large leaps from the motion picture’s plot points in order to arrive at the same character-building conclusions that the kids in the film do. Having said that, the movie’s messages are still very valuable. Moreover, they are seamlessly instilled into young viewers thanks to the abundantly absorbing adventure on which it takes audiences of all ages. (Grade: C)
‘Happy People: A Year in the Taiga’*Werner Herzogon and Dmitry Vasyukov visit the indigenous people living in Bakhtia - the heart of the Siberian Taiga - some 300 villagers whose daily routines have barely changed over the last century and live according to their own values and cultural traditions. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NR - 90 minutes)

‘Jack the Giant Slayer’*Nicholas Hoult plays a young farmhand who unwittingly opens a gateway between our
world and a fearsome race of giants. Fighting for a kingdom, its people and the love of a brave princess, the farmhand comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend. (PG-13 - 100 minutes)

“On top of that, we had to put together two people to make one with Bill Nighy and myself. We had to create this character where the two of us were a two-headed giant. We were using Bill’s body and his head. He had to act and I had to mirror him physically so that my body was moving the same as his but I had to act separately with my head and my right arm since I am the head and arm that is attached to him. All of my theater and mime training came into play there. But then the voice-over thing of having to imagine everything that was there came into play at the same time.
“And my character also has no vocal cords. He speaks through all of these strange sounds and weird gestations so I had to emote with my face and my hands. And you may say, ‘But that doesn’t look like you and Bill.’ Yeah, that’s true, because then they put

“This was performance capture. It is the same process that was used in ‘Avatar,’ where you are actually acting in a big room with all of these sensors, cameras and people with computers. It is kind of like performing for NASA. You are wearing these suits with sensors on them; they map your face and record it all into the computer so that it picks up everything you do. You don’t have the sets and you don’t have the costumes but you do have the other actors - which is great - and you are imagining, ‘OK, you are running through the hallway of this castle. You are chasing Jack and you grab him.’

‘Treasure Detectives’ seeks to separate the fake from the fabulous

Expert Curtis Dowling and his team of investigators seek the facts behind collectibles, artwork and antiquities using high-tech science, innovative technology and street smarts to discover if they’re sophisticated forgeries or true collectors’ items.
They not only trace an item’s origin and manufacture but also, if it is a fake, how the deception was accomplished.

While a diseased corn-on-a-cob or a bowl of piping hot crab porridge might not sound appetizing, around the globe these unusual foods are regulars on the breakfast table. As food experts predict that Brits will broaden their breakfast choices in the next 10 years, seeking influence from our foreign brekkie eaters, our beloved fry-up could soon be toast to make way for more exotic dishes like savoury crab porridge, seaweed flakes, and fishy breakfasts.
Pakistan: Siri Paya
In Pakistan, this soup is dished up at breakfast time, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Siri means head and paya means feet, so
you might be able to guess what the main ingredients are in the soup. The Siri soup is made from a slow-cooked cow, lamb or
goats head and feet.
Hong Kong: Crab Porridge
Congee is a porridge made by slow-cooking rice for an extended period of time, until it takes on a thick, creamy texture. Eat like those in Hong Kong and chuck a boiled crab in for good measure, either the whole crab, or a cooked claw.
Iceland: Hafragrautur
Hafragrautur, or oatmeal, has been a staple in the diet of Icelandic families for many years. Oats and water or milk are mixed in a pot and left to simmer. Hafragrautur is usually served with a sprinkle of brown sugar, or occasionally a handful of raisins or a pat of butter.

Ok I know I wrote a blog not long ago about the past, but I came across some information last week and felt the need to share it. In the last blog I talked about not letting the past hold you back from what you could have now, but how do we let go of the past? I came across five steps that we must all do to be able to let go of the past and be able to completely move on.
Step One- Stop all Communication.
Yes we all do it. We break up but yet we continue to call the other person, text them, e-mail etc- and regardless of the intentions we end up in an argument, not to mention feeling worse. After a break up there’s going to be those couple of days of communication of either A- trying to work it out or B- the returning of the things, once you get through the first few days of the break up stop all communication. Delete them from your phone, e-mail address book, Facebook, Twitter, everything.
“But I have their phone number/e-mail memorized.” Yeah we all do, but once you stop using it you’ll forget it. Trust me.
Step Two- Throw away every memory.
Get rid of everything. My ex and I had a ticket board, and on this board was every sporting event, concert, movie, festival that we’d ever gone to together. After being together for nearly three years, it was covered. When I left him, I left the board, along with shirts and teddy bears. Let’s be honest, I pawned the jewelry, but I knew I couldn’t take the physical attributes with me that queued a memory.
Step Three- Pictures, delete and throw away.
In the digital age we are taking twice as many pictures now than we did we film existed. Go through your phone, computer, digital
camera and digital picture frame and get rid of them. Any that are printed off, rip them up and throw them away. Like with step two, you have to get rid of anything that’s going to bring on a memory. Good or bad, you have to separate yourself.
Step Four- Delete Texts and Emails
We all save text message and e-mails that made us feel good or because we don’t ever delete anything. The last thing you want to happen is going back through old text or e-mails looking for something and just happen to come across that message that made you smile the day you got it. You both decided it was time to end the relationship, so delete them from your life.
Step Five- Forgetting the Feeling
This is probably the hardest one of them all, forgetting the way that person made you feel. Even if in the end things got so bad that you were always
miserable, you had some type of feeling inside you that made you stay, that “butterflies in the stomach” feeling. You have to find something to occupy your mind so it doesn’t wonder there. I would suggest every time you think of them pick a task to do- cook, clean, exercise, call a friend, whatever it is do something that’s going to get your mind off of them. Little by little you’ll find yourself thinking about them less and doing this other activity more often.
In the end you’re not being bitter about this past relationship; it’s creating so much space between you and it that when you move onto the next person your thoughts aren’t still lingering in your mind.

I like Beer People. Scratch that, I love Beer People. For those of you that were fortunate enough to attend Arizona Beer Week events, you know exactly what I mean. People in the craft brewing community are absolutely amazing and wonderful to be around. So much so that you will notice that I capitalize the term “Beer People” since I think the group deserves to be singled out and separated from people that drink beer.
Before we get started, let’s clarify the term Beer People. Beer People are made up of two distinct groups, industry folks and consumers, or regular old Beer Geeks as they are sometimes called. Beer Geeks is a term of endearment and should never be confused with the phrase Beer Snob which implies a certain air of superiority which is contrary to the principals of craft beer. Each need the other to survive and there are many instances
when the line blurs or is totally crossed as virtually all of the industry members in our little beer community double as Beer Geeks.
Most people thought that Beer Week started on Saturday February 16th with the Strong Beer Festival. While this was the official kickoff event, there were quite a few pre-events going on around town. Many Beer People were out and about looking for the fun, finding the folks that had just arrived for a week of beer and merriment (beeriment?) and enjoying some impromptu events. The Praying Monk saw quite the gathering of Beer People as reps from Ska, Left Hand, Oskar Blues, Four Peaks, BJ’s and Huss Brewing all gathered for a few beers and some munchies. Later the party moved on to T.T. Roadhouse where the gathered enjoyed a couple of last beers before the impending storm. Other events included some great times at Mellow Mushroom and O.H.S.O, the latter
hosting a local firkin night that featured some real special beers. Eric Wallace, founder of Left Hand Brewing, taught Beer Class at Whole Foods Chandler…and the week was on.
We are not going to say too much about Strong Beer since it has been re-hashed just about everywhere. Suffice to say that every year gets better, the crowds are always well behaved…as Beer People should be…and everybody leaves happy and having tried some special beers they haven’t had before. I cannot emphasize enough how in control the crowd is at this festival. Given the sheer quantities of high ABV beer available you would think it would be enough to push people over the edge and totally out of control. But this is not the drunk fest that some other festivals are. Our hosts for the day, the Arizona Brewers Guild, make sure that the festival is well controlled by not overselling it and making
sure there is enough beer for the crowds.
After Strong Beer there were several great after parties including two, one at O.H.S.O. and one at Yucca Tap Room that seemed to serve the sole purpose of almost killing Eric Wallace. By the time Eric had been in town for 30 hours he had already attended five different events including the Strong Beer Festival (Spoiler Alert – Eric survived). The other great after party was at T.T. Roadhouse where Abita was featured and to make sure you knew it, they rolled in the Jamburritos food truck, a Cajun food truck that rocked everybody’s taste buds and even drew a couple of families that were passing by into the parking lot to sample their wares.
Keeping with the Beer People theme, an industry only breakfast was held at SanTan Brewing and while the food was amazing, the gathering of different distributors,

suppliers and such was the best part. Lions and lambs, dogs and cats, all sharing a beer (or Bloody Mary) and a plate of food before entering back into the ring to once again do battle for their own cause. Keeping with the theme of harmony and world peace, the other event that attracted a mixed group of Beer People was the Third Annual Boulders on Broadway Mini Festival. Plenty of beer from plenty of different suppliers was available and once again there were all kinds of wonderful people on hand to chat with and enjoy a beer with.
Wednesday night was back into the multiple brewers’ event as Draw 10 hosted a Night in Colorado featuring multiple Colorado beers and Flanny’s hosted Craft Brewers Trivia. Several local and out of town brewers played trivia together, and more importantly brought some great beers for the rest of the folks to enjoy. Later that night, Ska Brewing hosted what may have been the most interesting and talked about event. Featured for one appearance only, at Yucca Tap Room, was the burlesque
stylings of Breezi and the Deviant Dames. Lest anyone think that this was some sort of wild, out of control night, it was true old school burlesque performed tastefully and artistically by the ladies. But the focus of the night was on Ska Brewing. At one point I counted representation at this event by no less than 20 different craft breweries and just about everybody enjoyed one of the fine beers made by their hosts from Durango. It was another great opportunity to see the cooperative spirit that is craft beer.
Thursday night was one of the most exciting nights of the week. Flanny’s hosted what has become their annual Colorado Firkin night. Seven different firkins from seven different breweries were available to sample and each one was amazing. But more than just that, the Flanagan father and son team weren’t satisfied with just having the seven firkins. Each brewery had a representative there, in some cases this meant one of the brewers, who took a minute or two to talk about the special beer they prepared prior to swinging the mallet and tapping the firkin. There was a friendly competition between the breweries to see which firkin would die first and all applauded when J.R. from Odell raised his empty firkin high above his head. But there were no losers as the packed house enjoyed all the beers and left happy and smiling.

Friday night hosted many events including the Papago Brewers Shuffleboard tournament which is where just about everybody ended up. Even many of the supplier reps that had events elsewhere stopped by to catch the final match that featured upstart Ross from Abita Brewing pairing with Ron Kloth of Papago who used his home table advantage to win the tournament. Everybody was a winner here as there was plenty of great beer from each brewery and

New American Pale Ale from Alaskan Brewing
releases March 1 Alaskan Brewing is releasing their first new, year-round bottled brew since 2009 with Alaskan Freeride APA. This floral, fruity and citrusy American Pale Ale features Citra, Centennial and Cascade hops in balance with a medium malt body.
First brewed on Alaskan’s pilot system in 2010, Alaskan Freeride APA became a local favorite through Alaskan’s Rough Draft series of draft experimental brews available in Alaska only. Alaskan then shared Freeride APA with select draft locations in the lower 48 via their Rough Draft Export series in the spring of 2012 to celebrate their role as the official beer of FLOW Tailgate Alaska and the annual World Freeride Festival held each year in Thompson Pass near Valdez, Alaska.
“Some of us on the brew crew spend a lot of our free time in Alaska’s backcountry, skiing and snowboarding,” said Alaskan Brewer Tyler Lindquist. “The APA grew out of our attempts at brewing the perfect après-ski beer, but it turned into basically a great après-anything beer.”
Like all Alaskan Brewing labels, Alaskan Freeride APA features scenes from life in Alaska, including backcountry snowboarding near Juneau and snow-biking on a glacial lake. While previous Alaskan label art features vibrant illustrations of Alaska activities, this new package features photographs of Alaskans in action which directly connect the new brew to the people and places that inspired it.
