Show Respect Home & School Connection
Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated • 128 N. Royal Avenue, Front Royal, VA 22630 • 540-636-4280
The holiday season is full of opportunities for your youngster to practice something that is important all year long—respect! Here are some examples:
• Talk about respect before a get-together. Explain that she should offer her seat to an adult who is standing. Also, if your child isn’t used to using titles (“Aunt,” “Mr.”), discuss this before visiting someone who prefers them. (“The people you’ll meet like to be called by Mr. or Mrs.”).
• Encourage your youngster to respect other cultures and traditions. If a friend observes a different holiday, she can wish the person a nice celebration. She might also point out something they have in common (“We have tons of relatives in town, too”).
A Grandparent Volunteer Home & School Connection
Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated • 128 N. Royal Avenue, Front Royal, VA 22630 • 540-636-4280
Last year when my mom was in town for the holidays, she asked if she could help me with my daughter Emily’s class party. I checked with the teacher, and he said he’d be happy to have a grandparent volunteer. But before volunteering, she needed to be cleared to volunteer through the District by signing up with www.getinvolvedineducation.com. My mother and I set up the snacks, and she played a game with small groups of kids. The students also enjoyed hearing what winter is like where she lives—she told stories about getting several feet of snow and being stuck inside for days. My daughter was proud to have her grandmother at school. And my mom said she liked seeing Emily’s classroom and meeting her teacher and friends. I’ve already gotten permission from this year’s teacher for her to help out again.
Our Student Council is

WELCOME TO OUR DMF WALKABOUTAUTISM & EXPO, BROUGHT TO YOU BY
WALGREENS
TEAM PAGE! The Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism & Expo, brought to you by Walgreens, will be held Saturday January 25,2014 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida. This is a greatopportunity for us to work together and make a difference forchildren, teens, and adults living with autism. Proceeds raisedthrough this effort will support local South Florida organizations, including hundreds of participating local schools as well as The DanMarino Foundation. What is really important to me is that all moneyraised here, stays here in South Florida! Why we need your help:There is no known cause or cure for autism. It is the fastest-growing developmental disorder, and according to the Center forDisease Control, 1 in 88 children in the United States have autism. Autism usually appears in early childhood, before the age of 3. Though symptoms and severity vary, autism affects a child's abilityto communicate and interact with others. Intensive, early treatmentcan make a big difference in the lives of many children with autismand enable them to achieve independence later in life. Currently,90% of adults with autism are unemployed which is a startlingstatistic! That is why I am asking for your support. Monies raisedwill provide much-needed resources to our community-basedprograms, services, and schools.
Help us help our community. Help us make a difference!
