The ABCs of conferences
Try these suggestions to get the most out of your next parent-teacher conference.
Ask questions. A written list will help you remember what you want to know. You might ask whether your child participates in class or how well he gets along with classmates.
Be positive. You could tell the teacher about a classroom activity or lesson that your youngster particularly enjoyed. Sharing good news helps create a strong working relationship.
Check back. If, for instance, your child needs extra help with math facts or struggles with taking turns, see what you can do at home. Then, find out how and when to follow up on his progress
.
Activity Corner: A musical experiment
Why do musical notes sound high or low? Your youngster can find out by making her own set of windpipes. She’ll learn about music and science at the same time.
1. Have your child cut nine straws to different lengths and leave a tenth straw whole. 2. Ask her to lay them side by side, leaving a little space between each straw. 3. Help her put tape across the straws, front and back, to hold them together. 4. She should cut two pieces of cardboard that are wide enough to cover the straws and tape
one piece to each side.
Now your youngster is ready to play her instrument! Suggest that she blow through one straw at a time. Does she know why each straw makes a slightly different sound?
Answer: The shorter the straw, the faster it vibrates (and the higher the pitch) when air is blown through it.
Celebrate Progress
Suggest that your child create a fun reminder of all the things she has accomplished. Let her cover a container with construction paper and label it “I did it!” Then, she can write each success (“memorized the state capitals”) on a slip of paper and put it in the container. When she’s feeling discouraged, have her read the slips.

WELCOME TO OUR DMF WALKABOUTAUTISM & EXPO, BROUGHT TO YOU BY
WALGREENS
TEAM PAGE! The Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism & Expo, brought to you by Walgreens, will be held Saturday January 25,2014 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida. This is a greatopportunity for us to work together and make a difference forchildren, teens, and adults living with autism. Proceeds raisedthrough this effort will support local South Florida organizations, including hundreds of participating local schools as well as The DanMarino Foundation. What is really important to me is that all moneyraised here, stays here in South Florida! Why we need your help:There is no known cause or cure for autism. It is the fastest-growing developmental disorder, and according to the Center forDisease Control, 1 in 88 children in the United States have autism. Autism usually appears in early childhood, before the age of 3. Though symptoms and severity vary, autism affects a child's abilityto communicate and interact with others. Intensive, early treatmentcan make a big difference in the lives of many children with autismand enable them to achieve independence later in life. Currently,90% of adults with autism are unemployed which is a startlingstatistic! That is why I am asking for your support. Monies raisedwill provide much-needed resources to our community-basedprograms, services, and schools.
Help us help our community. Help us make a difference!

FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IN BROWARD
OFFERS HOLIDAY FOOD SAFETY TIPS (BROWARD COUNTY, FL) - As the holidays approach, cooking that special turkey dinner gives rise to anxieties and questions. What kind of turkey should I buy? Should I buy a frozen turkey or a fresh one? How do I store the turkey? The Florida Department of Health in Broward County would like to offer a few simple steps to ensure a delicious and safe holiday meal. Holiday Food Safety - Remember the Basics: Clean, Cook, Chill, Separate Clean – Wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces before and after food preparation, and anything else that comes in contact with raw turkey, poultry and their juices, with soap and water. Especially, wash your hands after preparing meat, poultry, eggs, or seafood. Cook to proper temperatures. Cook food to proper internal temperature (Check packing or instructions for correct temperature settings.) Check for internal temperature with a food thermometer. Separate – Do not cross contaminate. Keep raw meat, poultry, eggs and seafood and their juices away from ready to eat food and from each other. Chill – Refrigerate properly. Refrigerate or freeze prepared food and leftovers within two hours of food preparation. Make sure the refrigerator is set at no higher than 41° F and the freezer is set at 0° F. Defrosting turkey and other foods. The safest thawing method is in the refrigerator at 41° F. Plan ahead: a 16-20 lb. turkey can take: 2-3 days to thaw in the refrigerator, or 8-10 hours to thaw in cold, running water. Never thaw a turkey or any other food by leaving it on the counter. To stuff or not to stuff. The safest way to cook the stuffing is separate from the turkey. But whether the stuffing is cooked inside or outside of the turkey, the stuffing must reach an internal temperature of 165°F. If the turkey is stuffed, mix ingredients just prior to filling the cavity. Stuff loosely to help ensure safe, even cooking. Remember, the temperature of a whole turkey must reach 180 °F in the innermost part of the thigh and the center of the stuffing must reach 165 °F.

Leftovers: Package leftovers in small portions and refrigerate or freeze within 2 hours of serving in smaller, shallow containers to ensure rapid cooling. DO NOT leave turkey, stuffing and other foods at room temperature on the table all day long so people can nibble. Reheat leftovers to proper temperatures: 165° F. Use a food thermometer to check temperature. Remember, if in doubt, throw it out.
