Poetry Out Loud is a yearly event where you choose a poem from the website www.poetryoutloud.org. You must memorize the chosen poem to recite; you must be able to recite the poem perfectly, without missing any words. Poetry Out Loud gives out $20,000 to the National champion. In order to receive this honor, you must first compete with students in your class. Classroom winners move on to compete in the school competition- thats when the real fun starts. The school winner then goes on to compete with local students who won their school’s competition; that is what is known as the region- als. The winner will then compete to go to the nationals in Washington. If you think that you can do all of that, then it would be an easy way to make $20,000 . I urge you to at least try it out; you never know, you might like it. Freshmen-juniors are highly wanted for this competition; however, seniors are welcome to compete as well. No SmokingBy Vincent Moore

“Smoking is a very bad habit.”- Lorenzo

You know, my friend inspired me to write this article. Now I’m not going to soil his name in the school newspaper, so let’s just call him Chris Farley. Anyway, Chris hasn’t always been a partier and used to have a lot of potential as an actor. Now, thanks to the abomination we call cigarettes, he could barely recite his lines because of the smoke in his lungs. Chris is dead now. Now to bore you with facts about smoking. Smoking-related diseases cause an estimated 440,000 American deaths each year. Smoking costs the United States over $150 billion annually in health care costs. Cigarette smoking has been identified as the most important source of preventable morbidity and premature mortality in the United States and the world (Smoking-facts.net). Hopefully, that convinced you not to smoke and convinced someone to quit smoking. Well, I’m sure after reading such an informative article like this one, you’re probably thinking, “So how does the average Joe stop smoking?” To effectively kick this nasty, life- endangering, unattract-ive habit you need to put as much time as possible between each ciga-rette, remember that cravings only last for a few minutes. Just think of how proud you would be of yourself after quitting.

What Can’t You Live Without?By: Clare Nunley What do you say to people asking you where you’re going for college, and what do you want to do there? Do you already know your plan, or are you just like “Haha, uhmmm....I’m working on that.” The stress level on seniors, and even juniors these days is crazy. I mean, we are like, seventeen and eighteen, right? Why do we need to know what we want to do for the rest of our lives?

Alright. I’ll admit it. I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do, and where I want to go. But I’m just saying that it’s okay to not know what you want to do. One of the main purposes of college is to find out what you want to do, and who you are. Who you want. What you want. What you don’t care about, and what you can’t live without. That. That, right there, is what determines what you should be when you “grow up.”

2012 History By: Sydney Velez As we get ready to break for the Holidays and New Years, we should reminisce in our 2012 year. As we continue to live our lives going forward, we tend to forget things that happened in the past. So, instead of saying goofy things that happen

in December, since we all pretty much know that the only thing we care about is Christmas, I’ll say major things that happened this past year.

•Jan. 18th - S.O.P.A. blackout •Feb. 5th - Giants win the Super bowl XLVI against the Patriots •March 20th- John Carter is released. It is the biggest loss Disney has had, losing over $200 million. •April 2nd- Seven students are killed in a California shooting •May 17th- The Census Bureau says that white births are no longer dominant in the United States, but they remain the majority in population with 63.4% •June 3rd- Tiger Woods wins the 73rd PGA tour•July 27th – August 12th- The Summer Olympics were held in London, England. •August 6th- Curiosity lands on Mars. •September 11th- In Bengasi, Libya, the 11th year an-niversary of 9/11/01, the US ambassador and others were killed as a result of terrorist attacks. •October 14th – Felix Baumgartner broke the sound bar-rier by skydiving 23 miles out of a plane in New Mexico. •November 6th – Barrack Obama was reelected and will serve another term as the US President •December 21st- Mayans predict we will all die.

Same Old, Same Old...By: Sydney Velez Last year, I re-ceived some pretty cool things for Christmas.

When I went back to school in January, I noticed that all my friends got pretty much the same things. They all asked for iPods or Beats or some other fancy electronic that everyone has. This kinda bothered me. Five years ago, I bought the “Next big thing, the iPod Classic.” Now, it’s the iPod touch 5. My problem with getting new things, is that next year there will the newer versions of these things. It’s annoying how companies choose to fix what’s not broken. Apple and Sam-sung are notorious for doing this. I have an idea. Maybe instead of constantly redoing the electronics you al-ready have, maybe you could just create a whole new product. One that isn’t related to any other product you have made, and is completely unique. Call it something different, also. I’m over everything being called the i-something. Try the q-some-thing. It’s different. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love the newest electronic, but I don’t wish to replace something that isn’t broken, when I could have a completely different product.

Do you happen to have a donkey? Well, I wouldn’t recommend putting him in your bath-tub; it’s illegal in our wonderful state of Georgia. Did someone use “fighting” words with you? If so, then it’s perfectly legal to use simple battery. Wanna carry an ice cream cone in your back pocket on a Sunday? I wouldn’t do that if I were you, it’s punishable by law. If you take your giraffe to Atlanta, whatever you do, DO NOT tie him to a telephone pole. Piggy back rides are also illegal in Atlanta. You have chicken in Gainesville? You better eat it with your hands, it’s illegal otherwise. In Quitman, you cannot drive on the sidewalk no matter how appealing it may look, don’t do it. Also, in Quitman it is illegal for a chicken to cross the road, so if you see him try just turn him in. Isn’t Georgia great?! We have some of the oddest laws but not as odd as most. Aren’t you proud to live in this great state? If you want to see more weird state laws go to ahajokes.com/stupid_laws.html. Some will make you laugh, others will make you wonder exactly why this law was made and who would even TRY to do any of it.

Sorry Sir...That’s IllegalBy Tiffani Pair

Hunting and FishingCoon HuntingBy Dylan Free It’s about that time again, folks. Leaves are falling, it’s getting chilly, and the coons are out and about. In this article I’m going to tell y’all how to hunt, where to hunt, and the ups and downs of coon hunting. Thefirstthingy’allneedto know is what kind of dog to get. For me, the best kind of dog is a Bluetick Coonhound, but it doesn’t matter as y’all know how to train you’re dog. Thefirstthingisthatyouneedto trap a live coon. You can do this by getting a trap for a coon. You sit the trap out where you know that they’re coons (they are almost always around water). When you get a coon, you want to bring your dogs up to the cage and let them smell the coon. Let the coon go about a minute after you turn your dogs loose. Let them go after the coon. But, keep in mind that if it’s their firsttimegoingafterthecoon, you shouldn’t get your hopes up. More than likely you will have to do this a couple more times before your dog gets the coon in the tree. The best place to hunt is near rivers or creeks. Coons like to stay near water because that’s where they get their food. They likefish, crawfish, andfrogs. The reason I like to coon hunt is because it’s fun. Coon hunting can also be challenging, depending on where you hunt. It’s not like any other hunt-ing because you can go with a group, talk about things, and catch up with friends.

A Band RecapWhat’s Up? What’s Up? What’s Up?By: Clare Nunley The JCCHS Marching Band performed in the Athens Christmas parade on Thurs-day, Dec. 6 at 7:00 pm. It’s always fun to march by the crowd of people cheering for you--it gives your heart a warm, fuzzy feeling even when it’s freezing outside. The parade went well, and the band performed Angel Medley to many thousands of people. Merry Christ-mas, Ho Ho Ho! Also, the JCCHS Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble performed a Christmas concert on Monday, December 10 at 7:30 in the J.L. McMullan Auditorium. All bands performed spectacularly, and the drawings for diamond studs and tires was held.

End of the Marching SeasonBy: Chloe Soto Imagine 16 bands all wanting something in common… TO BE THE BEST. On Sat-urday, October 24th, JCCHS band members came home singing “when the Panthers come marching in”……… with grins as wide as their tubas. For those of you who do not know, the band was awarded with an overall straight superior. Those scores were for percussion, color guard, and drum line. I want to give a shout out to the Percussion section who got 1st place, Color guard who got third place, Band 1st place, and Drum Major 2nd place, all in 8AAA. Great job Casey Hitzges! They were awarded trophies in every section. Congratulations JCCHS band!

District Honor BandBy: Clare Nunley Many band students on Saturday, December 8th, tried out at Norcross High School for District Honor Band. 9th and 10th graders play a total of nine scales, an etude, and sightread. 11th and 12th graders play a total of 13 scales, an etude, and sightread. If one of them makes it, he or she will go to the Honor band or Clinic band, depending on his or her scores, or grade. We hope to see a good turnout this year--and possibly beat the Middle School’s 27 accepted in DHB. Stay tuned, and wish us all luck for the audition in January for All-State. Oh yeahhh.

We’re All Over the State The Chorus is proud to announce that two of its stu-dents, Cody Braselton and McKenna Brandenburg, have been accepted to the 2013 GMEA High School All-State Chorus! All-State Chorus is the highest level of achievement for high school chorus students in the state of Georgia. The competition for spots is extreme-ly fierce as only approximately the top 500 female and top 500 males are accepted out of the many thousand that audition. If you see Cody or McKenna, please congratulate them for their tremendous achievement!

How to Upgrade to a New Phone and Actually Make MoneyBy Chase Johnson Have you been itching to get a new phone but don’t have the money? Well, how would you like to upgrade, and make money doing it? You’re probably thinking this has to be a scam, it sounds to good to be true. Well it’s not, I do this every time I upgrade my phone. Unfortunate-ly, this only works with iPhones.Step One: Prepare your Phone to sell on eBay Firstly, restore your phone in iTunes. Then, to get more money out of it we are going to Jailbreak it. Now let me clarify something, most people think Jailbreaking gets you free apps and is illegal. That’s not true; The Library of Congress approved a DMCA exemption in 2010 for Jailbreaking cell phones, including the iPhone. However, if you hack it to install “Installous” that will get you free apps and that is illegal. For a guide on how to Jailbreak your iPhone visit: http://bit.ly/LiKiJH .Step Two: Sell your Phone on eBay At the moment a Jailbroken iPhone 4 is going for around $260 on eBay. A new iPhone 5 (if you qualify for an upgrade with AT&T) is $200 with a 2 year contract. So if you sell your iPhone 4 and buy an iPhone 5 you will make $50- $60. This trick may not work for everyone, but it may help you. There you go. Enjoy the $50 you just made. Oh yeah, and your new phone.

Building your own com-puter: Edition 3 – Installing an operating system In this edition I will tell you how to install Windows 7, but the process is pretty much the same for any edition of Win-dows including Windows 8. The things you will need for this are a computer you built with a DVD drive and a Windows 7 disc with a valid product key.

Computers...

The first thing you will need to do is change your boot order in your bios so your computer boots from the DVD. To do that you will need to look at the screen right at the very second you turn your computer on it should be the logo of the company that makes your motherboard it should also say something like: “BIOS Settings: Del” or “BIOS Settings: ESC” or “Setup: Del” or “Setup: ESC”. That tells you what key to press to enter setup. So turn the computer back off and start repeatedly tapping the corresponding key (del, esc, ect.). When you enter setup you will want to find the boot device priority and change it so the DVD drive is above the hard drive. Then, make sure to Exit Saving Changes. Insert the DVD and restart the computer, when it loads just follow the on-screen instructions to setup windows. Once you are done pat yourself on the back, you just built a computer.

Boys BasketballBy: Kevin Lineberger There is excitement and even jitters coming out of the boy’s basketball team this year. Coach Beaver enters his 6th year as the head coach of the team. With a totally new combination of players, Beaver looks to “speed” the tempo up. The 2012-2013 varsity boys basketball team will include four seniors: Reno

Messler, Kevin Lineberger, Chase Dunlap, and Maurice Wade. In addition it will feature juniors Xavier Harper, Dillon McDonald, Hakeem Samuels, Layson Giles, and Andrew Fogarty. Rounding out the lineup will be the lone sophomore Jacob Lewis. “We are the most athletic we have been while I have been here,” says Beaver. “As a result we will use that as an advantage. We are going to play a lot different than the previous year’s I have been here.” There will be less of a patterned offense and more of a run and gun style. Overall, Beaver has high expectations for the team this year. The most important thing will be “getting each player to understand and play their role and not try to do too much.” “We have a lot of talent and potential to do great things this year, and I am really excited to see what we can do.” Theonlyareaofconcernthisyearfortheteamisthenumberoffirsttimevarsityplayers.Precisely only three players have full time varsity experience coming into this season. “We will have some growing pains, but they played a lot of games together this summer, so I think it won’t be too big of a transition.” The Boys Basketball team opens its season up with an inner squad scrimmage on November 13; then begins a pre-season tournament at home on November 19-20.

Girls Varsity BasketballBy: Kevin Lineberger The 2012-2013 girls varsity basketball team will look very similar to last years’ team. We only lost two seniors from last years’ squad, while Coach Hawley returns for his 3rd year as head coach. Thegirl’sVarsitybasketballteamwillincludefiveseniors:VictoriaFontana,

Savannah Roncodori, Kaity Hays, Daphne Melton, and Gabbi Kastner. To round up the lineup will be three juniors: Mason Garland, Kaite Phillips, and Victoria Woods. As the season progresses Haw-ley hopes to bring up some underclassmen to gain some varsity time as well. The style of play this year will be similar to past years under Hawley. “We are a quicker team and we will look to get out transition rather than the half court.” says Hawley. “We aren’t the biggest team, so getting out on fast breaks and speeding up the tempo will be important this year.” A Strong point for the team this year will be the overall team strength and speed. Over the summer the girls had many weight training sessions organized to increase speed and strength. “Our girls will be a lot stronger this year because of all the extra work they put in,” explains Hawley. “We are going to be stronger and quicker.” InordertohaveasuccessfulseasonHawleypointsouttwokeyareas:finishingbetterandthe grabbing the 50/50 ball. Finishing better will give the team easy buckets that every team can use. Grabbing the 50/50 ball will give more opportunities to score and keep the ball out of the opponent’s hands. “We have to work on taking advantage of second chances to score when they are presented.” The Girls Basketball team opens its season with a scrimmage at Apalachee High school on November13.ThefirsthomegamewillDecember8againstWashingtonWilkesHighschool.

Dakota’s NFL PredictionsBy: Dakota Reeves

The rookie out of Stan-ford was drafted by the Colts as the

number one overall draft pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. While the Colts record isn’t impres-sive, Luck’s stats are. He has thrown for 3,596 on 279 completions, averages 7 yards a pass, and has an overall completion percentage of 55 percent. Player If Manning continues to dominate defenses with his play calling, he will win the “Player of the Year Award.” Manning is second in the NFL with a quatarback rating of 104.6. Manning hasn’t had manygreatfirsthalfperfor-mances but Manning shines when his team is down late in the game. Manning has thrown for 3,502 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 9 intercep-tions. After missing the 2011 season, Manning was released by the Colts and was picked up by the Denver Broncos. He has led the Broncos to a 9-3 record and to the top of the AFC West. Wesley William Roberts ScholarshipBy: Zenaida Marrero In Memory of Wesley Roberts, a fund has been funded to award several $1,500 scholarships for graduating seniors from Jackson County Comprehensive High school. The providers for the scholarship care more about enthusiasm and determination in reaching ones goals than a number on a transcript, so for people who have a GPA of 2.0 or higher this is for you! The essay really is the most important part of this application: it must be about yourself, your goals, and how this money will benefit you in reaching them. For more information look up the link below!http://pantherhelp.com/Scholarships_2012/Roberts%20Scholarship%202012.pdf

How to Make an Appointment for College DayJose Cruz Attention, Juniors and Seniors: do you want to miss school without being counted absent, and check out a college you would like to visit or attend after high school? First, you set up an appointment with the college you are interested in. Make sure you give the counselors a week and a half worth of notice, and get two forms from the counselor’s office. You get your teachers and parent’s signature on the first form and then return it to the counselor’s office once you fill it out. For the second form, you get college admission officer to sign it, and teachers from your school. Both of the forms you return to the counselor’s office. This will count as an excused absence. You have 3 college visits a year. The school will not provide trans-portation, you must provide your own transportation to the college you are planning to go to.

SAT ClassesBy: Sydney Velez This is probably going to be a really boring article, but it needs to be said. It really matters, whether you care about it or not. Everyone who wants to go to college has to take it. What is it? The SAT. What is the SAT? It is a national test that colleges use to see how much you know, and how you apply your knowledge. The higher you score, the better chance you have of getting into a nice college. The test is over subjects like reading, writing, and math. The next SAT test is January 26th. The deadline to sign up for the SAT is December 28th. So what is Jackson County doing to help you out with this very stressful test? Well, if you take a trip to the library, you’d find a huge selection of SAT practice books. You can check some out, and while you’re leaving, walk across the hall and talk to Mrs. Williams or Mrs. McMenomy for free ELT help sessions. Also available is a class, taught by Kaplan University, about SAT practice. See Mrs. Phillips for more information. I hope this helps you out, and you learned a little more about the SAT before you read this. For more information on the test, go to the school newsletter or www.sat.collegeboard.org.College PlanBy: Jose CruzDo you think it’s possible to go to college? Well it is, with my plan. If you’re a junior, here is what you do if you are starting to apply for college. If you start now, it would help you with your college plans. First what you do is, over the summer you work hard, get a good job and save 80 percent of that money. Put it in the bank, just in case you are tempted to waste it. Then during school make sure you have a part time job and save little by little. After you graduate, you work some more and make sure you have 7 thousand dollars in the bank before you go to college, so that 1 year is paid off. Work while you are going to college and in 1 year you will have enough money to pay the next year, so you can finish college instead of going one year and maybe never go back. This goes for seniors too, work all summer and after getting out of high school. Stack some paper so you can go to college. It is very important so you can be someone in life.

-Next SAT is January 26th, so sign up by December 28th!-Find SAT practice books in the library-Talk to Mrs. Williams or Mrs. McMenomy for FREEEE ELT help sessions-Talk to Mrs. Phillips for information about the available class taught by Kaplan university for SAT practice-Go to www.sat.collegeboard.org for more information.

Ur Lst TxtCaitlyn Martin You’re driving down the road and your phone goes off. Do you check it? Or do you wait until you stop? One text message could cost you your life. Is any text worth that risk? Texting is a habit many of us have, and if your phone buzzes, it’s your instinct to pick it up and read the message, even if you don’t intend to respond. There’s normally no danger to this…until it happens while you’re driving. Did you know that texting while driving makes you twenty-three times more likely to crash? Did you know that approximately 1.3 million crashes in 2011 were caused by a driver texting and driving? Did you know that teens who text and drive spend about 10% of their time texting out of their lane? It’s not just teens; 15% of teenage drivers say they have seen their parents text while driving. They aren’t setting the best example. That doesn’t mean we need to follow their lead. We should know that one text isn’t worth risking your life.

HolidayIssue 17 Winter 2012

By: Christina Mapel Looking at the Christmas holiday, I wanted to know if people had dishes that they enjoy every year. Were they passed down, or do they have some special connection to them or family members? So, I decided to investigate. I found some stories that were a real tear-jerker. One story was especially touching to me: Ms. Wilson, the librarian, told me that her family passes down, not just recipes, but a cast iron skillet. I thought it was interesting, so I asked her what exactly the pan meant to her and she said, “I remember on Sundays my mother would make country-fried steak, and fried chicken in [the skillet]. But for me, it wasn’t really making the recipes my grandmother or mother taught me, it was the quality time we spent together while making it.” It was “good old-fashion cooking.” Another story I found touching came from Becky Funderburk. “Every year my sister and I would bake cakes in our easy bake oven. We thought that the microwave was just a giant easy bake oven. We mixed flour, water, and cake mix together and microwave it for about 30 minutes. Every year it tasted horrible, so we would try adding and subtracting ingredients. We finally figured out that we had to add eggs.” she said with a smile. “We don’t really do it now that we are older, but I miss it.” I really enjoyed looking at the back-story of certain recipes. I know my family has recipes that we make every year, because they were once made by people we love that have passed away. Finding out why people make certain thing was really interesting, and it was a nice experience to be able to listen to all of the stories.

Gimme Sweets or Gimme SweetsBy: Kit and Kat It’s Christmas break and you’re at home curled up with a ton of blankets trying not to freeze to death, when a craving suddenly appears. Your mouth starts watering with the thought of a hot chocolate. You can taste the warmth and creaminess of the delightful hot chocolate, but wait you want something sweet to go with it. Your mind ponders on so many delicious treats. Cakes, brownies, cupcakes, and cookies you can’t take it anymore. There are delicious pastry shops/restaurants all over Georgia that will easily fulfill anyone’s cravings. Café Intermezzo is one of our favorite pastry restaurants to go to when wanting something sweet. “On the menu you will find great tasting cakes including an amazing chocolate cake and cheesecakes to choose from. The prices are a little higher than other locations in the area, but it is definitely well worth the extra money.”-Yahoo Voices. The service is family friendly and they always make you feel at home. This is a must go to for this winter break.“They have a great dessert menu to choose from. They have lots of different flavors and it truly is your basic cheesecake location with plenty of fresh baked desserts to choose from.”-Yahoo Voices. The Cheesecake Factory is one of the most popular restaurants known to man. Each of their cheesecakes has a delicious and unique taste to them. The service makes you feel welcome and happy to be there. It’s the perfect treat for a warm cozy winter break. This winter break don’t stay at home eating store bought crappy, hard, dull flavor sweets, instead go out to one of these pastry shops/restaurants and actually eat something delicious. You can visit their websites to check out their menu, make renovations, and just to see their collection of sweets.

Cheesecake Factory:4505 Ashford-Dunwoody Road www.thecheesecakefactory.com Do you have a craving for gummy candy, but

the small treats don’t satisfy your gummy thirst? If only there was some kind of huge gummy candy you could have all to yourself. Well, now there is. Introducing the “World’s Largest Gummy Bear”. This five-pound snack is equivalent to 1,400 small gummy bears. That’s 6,120 calories of chewy goodness. Its 10 inches tall and 5 inches wide, that’s about the size of a new born baby. You can eat it all to yourself, share with friends, or make it the greatest gift ever. Now, how do you eat this gooey beast? Well, there are only two possible ways. You can either do the “Bite & Tear” method, where you attack it with your teeth as if you found a small cub in the woods; or take the boring “Fork & Knife” method. For those of you who are vegan, Halal, or Kosher, you must know that the gummy bear contains pork gelatin (Just like its small cousin). There are ten flavors to choose from: Blue Raspberry, Bubblegum, Cherry Cola, Grape, Green Apple, Orange, Pineapple (The white one), Red Cherry, and 2 Three-Tone flavors. You can find these at http://vat19.com where you can also find several other awesome products, from Giant Gummy Worms to a 26lbs Party Bear. A single flavor bear is $29.99, plus shipping (Cheapest shipping price is $5.00) and a 3-tone is $35.99. For storage, you shouldn’t put it in the fridge because it will become stale in a mater of minutes. Instead, cover it in plastic wrap and leave it on the shelf between eating. I’ve decided to try one for myself and see if it’s really worth buying or if it’s just a waist of money. So far, I really enjoy mine, but there are some issues: Make sure you have strong teeth when eating the bear because it fights back. Also, never put your lips on it, it’s so sticky it can rip off some skin after a while. If you have braces, technically, you can’t eat this, but most of you have eaten worse things anyway. Just remember that these things can rip off brackets if you’re not careful. Finally, don’t try to rush through it, savor the taste or you’ll start vomiting instantly. After 3 days, I’ve just made it to the shoulders.

Bringing back the 80’s style “Cat Eye” Tribal Patterns with lace or pale tops are very popular.

Decorated high-waisted shorts are with any shirt are trending since last summer. Ombre Hair Is a national trend and

will soon die down due to the fact that EVERYBODY is doing it, including me.

For the guys and some girls, brand names Like Obey, Diamond Supply Co., the rap group OFWGKTA, and Taylor Gang.

Stores like Forever 21 and Pacsun carry a lot of the typical hipster or stylish looks trend-ing this year. If you’re really looking for that “soft grunge” look then any thrift shop can have what you’re looking for.

Fashion is all about cycles, some thing you might wear today might be back in fashion 50 years from now. This year we have many styles that were a big fashion trend in the 80’s and 70’s: Cat eyes and high-waisted shorts. The holidays are coming so if you have a special stylist in mind these pictures may give you an idea for their gift. This is for all you fashion-nistas out there that love to keep up with the latest trends. -Zenaida Marrero
