Interview Number
For Release 2 we have generated a new distance measure RT13V112 which is a calculation inwhole miles between the Main Family place code coordinates and the Parent/Child place codecoordinates. Please note this new variable may be obtained under restricted contract only.
For Release 3 we have generated a new categorical distance measure RT13V133 on theParent/Child File using RT13V112 variable Miles. We have also updated all Person Numbersso that the Parent/Child File correctly merges with the latest 1968-2015 Cross WaveIndividual File.
For Release 4 we have corrected a handful of Parent/Child Person Numbers on theParent/Child file that were not correctly updated to latest version on the 2015 ParentIdentification File.
For Release 5 we have updated all Person Numbers so that the Parent/Child File correctlymerges with the latest 1968-2017 Cross Wave Individual File.
For Release 6 we have a handful Parent/Child records that had a mismatch between thenumber of parent records on the Parent/Child File and the summary variable RT13V10 on thefamily file. We also make a handful of Person Number changes based on changes to ParentIdentification File.
This number is the merge key between the Rosters and Transfers Family Level File (RT13FAM)and it's companion file Rosters and Transfers Parent/Child Level File (RT13PARCHD). Theremay be some records in the family level file that have no corresponding records on theParent/Child file however, all records in the Parent/Child file will have a record on theRT Family level file. RT13V61=RT13V2 (RT Family file variable). Please note this numberis unique on the RT13FAM file but may not be contiguous.
This variable is a component of the primary key for the Parent/Child File.
RT13V61 (Interview Number) + RT13V70 (Type of Record) + RT13V72 (Record Number) provides aunique key to every record on this Parent/Child File.

For child records where we have non-missing values for birth month and year, age was notasked. However, we created an estimated age using the date of interview and the child'sbirth month and year collected. We assigned day of birth as the 15th in order to calculate RT13V83 for child records where AgeCkpt (RT13V79=5).

To obtain total dollars given in 2012, multiply the number of dollars in RT13V125 by thenumbers of weeks; months, etc. in a year coded in RTR13V126. Responses recorded as 'other'in RT13V126 were recoded to be total annual dollars in RT13V125 whenever possible based oninterviewer notes.
The questionnaire indicates a hard range for PT7 with a lower bound of $100 irrespectiveof the unit of time. If a respondent reported an amount less than $100 for any unit oftime other than a year (e.g. $50 a month), interviewers were able to record thisinformation in notes fields and PSID staff edited the information to record an amount forthe year. It is possible that in some instances the interviewers did the calculation forthe annual amount during the interview and recorded the annualized amount. It is likelythat interviewers then recorded the unit of time as 'Year.'
