However, in designing that space you must examine your exercise goals so that the area doesn’t become what one woman describes as “a perfect place to hang laundry.” Randy Vigil, membership manager for Equinox Fitness (opening a new facility near Fry’s Electronics in Palo Alto this summer) said that in order to get a good workout you should consider cardiovascu- lar, strength, balance, posture and agility — and that the equipment you choose flows naturally from the areas you want to emphasize. Of course, such issues as budget and space play into equipment decisions. If both are limited, you can still be in good shape. Vigil estimated that in 200 square feet and for about $650 you can set up a bicycle on tracks, an unstable piece, such as a medicine ball or Fitball for balance, dumbbells of different sizes, flexible bands (sort of surgical tubes with handles) for strength, power and flex- ibility, and a mat. “A mirror is also very helpful because it helps you check your form,” he added. T o exercise or not to exercise: That is not the question. We all know that we should exercise. The question is: How

do you incorporate an exercise regimen into your daily life? With time at a premium, more and more people are choosing to

dedicate space in their homes for regular workouts. However, in designing that space you must examine your exercise goals so that the area doesn’t become what one woman describes as “a perfect place to hang laundry.”

Randy Vigil, membership manager for Equinox Fitness (opening a new facility near Fry’s Electronics in Palo Alto this summer) said that in order to get a good workout you should consider cardiovascu-lar, strength, balance, posture and agility — and that the equipment you choose flows naturally from the areas you want to emphasize.

However, this is Silicon Valley, home of super achievers and mega houses. Exercise rooms here house equipment previously limited to professional gyms — from sophisticated universal gyms (individual

box,” into which she puts various finishes, such as carpet samples, experimenting with how they look under various lights.

Since incandescents gener-ate heat, you have to consider whether that is a plus or minus for your situation. Another factor is putting lights in strategic places — such as right over the Stair-master — so that you can read.

Light wells in these modern basements prevent the dark, damp feel of the converted “rec rooms” that Baby Boomers recall. “I like to place a mural or fountain out-side the wells so that the view is extended,” Krag said.

Flooring runs the gamut from cement (if your exercise room is in the garage) to far more forgiv-ing surfaces. In any case all the experts recommend liberal use of washable exercise mats, which provide cushioning for the body and protection of the underlying carpet or flooring. Interlocking, stabilizing rubber mats should also be used under heavy ma-chinery.

“I like to use a tight weave carpet. They were previously seen mainly in office areas, but now there is a wide choice for residential use,” Krag said. “I’ve recently used a cork floor in a home in Palo Alto. It’s not only for comfort. As a natural mate-

rial, it’s also green (environment-friendly).”

Vigil suggests a suspended hardwood floor similar to what is used in basketball courts. “It allows for bounce,” he said, thus making it ideal for exercise that entails a lot of jumping (use of a flat floor ladder) or for group classes.

Enhancements such as flat-screen TVs and music systems are also becoming more and more popular in home gyms. Krag advises people to use art as well in creating an encouraging environment.

In many cases exercise areas are adjacent to storage areas. How-ever, if there’s space, building in cabinets for storage of items such as towels, weights, mats, etc., is a good idea. Hooks for towels and/or robes are welcome accessories, and a small refrigerator for cold drinks is handy as well.

“We’re also designing less structured exercise/play areas for children,” Krag said. “We include climbing ladders, climbing ropes, trapeze bars, mats that can be Velcro-ed together for tumbling or creating structures, suction darts and art-making areas.”

Whatever space you use, the advice is to exercise judgment about what you really need be-fore you design the area, and to create a pleasant area that makes exercise enjoyable.

“You don’t want the machines to gather dust,” Vigil said. ■
