HOLY WEEK + FOLLOW, PARTAKE, SHARE

'Therefore, with all faith and devotion, let us commemorate the Lord’s entry into the city of our salvation, following in his footsteps, so that, being made by his grace partakers of the Cross, we may have a share also in his Resurrection and in his life.'

These words come from the opening prayer of Palm Sunday, the solemn entrance into Holy Week. Today they stand ready to enter the most sacred moment of Jesus’ life. The Church wants us to do more than “celebrate” these sacred days. We are called to “follow” His footsteps, “partake” of the Cross, and “share” in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Today we accompany Christ as he enters Jerusalem. As He enters the sacred city to celebrate Passover, the disciples and Jesus gather in the upper room. We sit at that table with the apostles, eating and drinking the bread and wine that is Jesus’ body and blood. On Good Friday, we stand at the foot of His cross, bringing our sins, suffering, and death. And, finally, we rise with Him on Easter Sunday. Hope conquers all evil and the human person is redeemed through the blood of Jesus. It is an incredible journey! It is the journey from death to life, from despair to hope. It is the most important journey the faithful will ever take.

We partake in His Passion by sacramentally and in prayer. Every Mass makes Calvary present for those who truly participate. During the Penitential Rite, our sins, suffering, and baggage are brought to the cross of Christ. In receiving Holy Communion, we are at the Mass of Holy Thursday, the foot of the Cross on Good Friday, and the empty tomb of Easter. Christ is present at each Mass, in the person of the priest celebrating and in the assembly, in the opening of the Word, and under the appearance of bread and wine. Every Mass is the Christian’s encounter with Christ, who suffered, died, and rose. This is how we follow, partake, and share in the final moments of Jesus. In the Eucharist, the faithful are one with Jesus.

As you stand today and contemplate the week ahead, remember that it is your week. You have prepared for this week through works of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Bring to the cross your own sin, suffering, and death. Be healed. And be free.

Estas palabras provienen de la oración de apertura del Domingo de Ramos, la solemne entrada a la Semana Santa. Hoy están listos para entrar en el momento más sagrado de la vida de Jesús. La Iglesia quiere que hagamos más que "celebrar" estos días sagrados. Estamos llamados a "seguir" Sus pasos,

"participar" de la Cruz, y "compartir" en la Resurrección de Jesucristo.

Participamos en Su Pasión sacramentalmente y en oración. Cada Misa hace presente al Calvario para aquellos que verdaderamente participan. Durante el Rito Penitencial nuestros pecados, sufrimiento y equipaje son traídos a la cruz de Cristo. Al recibir la Santa Comunión estamos en la Misa del Jueves

Santo, el pie de la Cruz el Viernes Santo y la tumba vacía de Pascua. Cristo está presente en cada Misa, en la persona del sacerdote celebrando y en la asamblea, en la apertura de la Palabra, y bajo la

apariencia del pan y del vino. Cada misa es el encuentro del cristiano con Cristo, que sufrió, murió y resucitó. Así es como lo seguimos, participamos y compartimos los momentos finales de Jesús. En la

Eucaristía, los fieles son uno con Jesús.

Mientras se paran hoy y contemplan la semana que viene, recuerden que es su semana. Ustedes se han preparado para esta semana a través de las obras de oración, ayuno y limosna. Traiga a la cruz su

propio pecado, sufrimiento y muerte. Ser curado. Y ser libre.

HOLY THURSDAY + WASH ONE ANOTHER’S FEET

“Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master, ‘and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher,

have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another ‘s feet.”

“Love one another as I have loved you” means that our love should be unconditional. . When Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, He showed us how we should humble ourselves to give

service to our neighbor, even to one who is lowly and poor, even to the one who we know hates us and might betray us.

Jesus teaches us that our love is far from His unless we repay evil with good, forgive all and repay with kindness those who harm us. In God’s vision, there is no “they”, only “we”, no strangers,

only brothers and sisters. No one should be left outside the circle of our love. We should be able to care for each other and draw the best from one another and help others find their way to our

Lord. We should be able to lift each other up and build up one another so that we are instrumental in the wholeness and healing of God’s people.

Everything we have: life, breath, family, hopes, dreams, loves, and every sort of gift and talent – God gave to us. Everything should be shared and given back to His children in need.

“I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” If Jesus, washed the feet of His first disciples, then we do the same and wash one another’s feet. Let us

always follow Jesus and serve one another. To follow Christ is to serve one another, minister to one another, carry each other’s burdens, lift each other up, pray for one another, love one another and die for one

another - serve anonymously even up to the Cross.

As Jesus has done to us, we too should do to all. Whose feet will you wash? Or, who will you serve? Who will you allow to wash your feet? Who will you allow to serve you?

JUEVES SANTO + LAVAR LOS PIES DE LOS OTROS

¿Te das cuenta de lo que he hecho por ti? Usted me llama

capaces de levantar unos a otros y construir unos a otros para que sean instrumentales en la totalidad y la sanidad del pueblo de Dios.

Todo lo que tenemos: vida, aliento, familia, esperanzas, sueños, amores, y todo tipo de don y talento - Dios nos dio. Todo debe ser compartido y devuelto a Sus hijos necesitados.

"Yo te he dado un modelo a seguir, para que como yo he hecho por ti, también lo hagas." Si Jesús, lavó los pies de sus primeros discípulos, entonces hacemos lo mismo y nos lavamos los

pies unos a otros. Sigamos siempre a Jesús y sirvamos unos a otros.

Seguir a Cristo es servirnos unos a otros, ministrarnos los unos a los otros, cargarnos los unos con los otros, levantarnos unos a otros, orar unos por otros, amarnos unos a otros y morir unos

por otros; servir anónimamente hasta la Cruz. Como Jesús nos ha hecho, nosotros también debemos hacer a todos. ¿De quién van a lavar los

pies? O, ¿a quién servirá? ¿A quién permitirás que te laves los pies? ¿A quién le permitirá servirle?

THE GOOD IN GOOD FRIDAY

Why call the day of Jesus’ death “Good Friday”? Allow me to suggest that the name Good Friday is appropriate because the suffering and death of Jesus, as terrible as it was, is the dramatic

culmination of God’s plan to save His people from their sins.

In order for the Good News of the Gospel to have meaning for us, we have to understand the bad news of our condition: we are sinful people under condemnation. The Good News of deliverance

only makes sense once we see how we are enslaved.

Good Friday is “good” because as terrible as that day was, it had to happen for us to receive the joy of Easter. The wrath of God against sin had to be poured out on Jesus, the perfect sacrificial

Lamb of God, in order for forgiveness and salvation to be poured out to the nations. Without

that awful day of suffering, sorrow, and shed blood at the cross, God could not be both “just and the justifier” of those who trust in Jesus. Paradoxically, the day that seemed to be

the greatest triumph of evil was actually the deathblow in God’s gloriously good plan to redeem the world from bondage.

The Cross is where we see the convergence of great suffering and God’s forgiveness. Psalm 85 sings of a day when “righteousness and peace” will “kiss each other.” The Cross of Jesus is where the Judas’s kiss is wiped away, where God’s demands, his righteousness, coincided with

His mercy. We receive divine mercy and peace because Jesus willingly took our punishment, the result of God’s righteousness against sin. “For the joy set before him” (Hebrews 12:2) Jesus endured the cross on Good Friday, knowing it led to his resurrection, our salvation, and the

beginning of God’s reign of righteousness and peace.

Good Friday marks the day when wrath and mercy met at the cross.

That’s why Good Friday is so dark and so Good.

LO BUENO EN VIERNES SANTO

¿Por qué llamar el día de la muerte de Jesús "Viernes Santo"? Permítanme sugerir que el nombre de Viernes Santo es apropiado

porque el sufrimiento y muerte de Jesús, por terrible que sea, es la culminación dramática del plan de Dios para salvar a Su pueblo de sus pecados.

The Exsultet: The Proclamation of Easter

It is truly right and just, with ardent love of mind and heart and with devoted service of our voice, to acclaim our God invisible, the almighty Father,

and Jesus Christ, our Lord, his Son, his Only Begotten. Who for our sake paid Adam's debt to the eternal Father, and, pouring out his own dear Blood,

wiped clean the record of our ancient sinfulness. These, then, are the feasts of Passover, in which is slain the Lamb, the one true Lamb,

whose Blood anoints the doorposts of believers.

This is the night, when once you led our forebears, Israel's children, from slavery in Egypt and made them pass dry-shod through the Red Sea.

This is the night that with a pillar of fire banished the darkness of sin.

This is the night that even now, throughout the world, sets Christian believers apart from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin, leading them to grace and joining them to his holy ones. This is the night, when Christ broke the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the

underworld. Our birth would have been no gain, had we not been redeemed. O wonder of your humble care for us!

O love, O charity beyond all telling, to ransom a slave you gave away your Son!

O truly necessary sin of Adam, destroyed completely by the Death of Christ! O happy fault that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer!

O truly blessed night, worthy alone to know the time and hour when Christ rose from the underworld! This is the night of which it is written:

The night shall be as bright as day, dazzling is the night for me, and full of gladness.

The sanctifying power of this night dispels wickedness, washes faults away, restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners, drives out hatred, fosters concord,

and brings down the mighty.

On this, your night of grace, O holy Father, accept this candle, a solemn offering, the work of bees and of your servants’ hands, an evening sacrifice of praise,

this gift from your most holy Church. But now we know the praises of this pillar, which glowing fire ignites for God's honor,

a fire into many flames divided, yet never dimmed by sharing of its light, for it is fed by melting wax, drawn out by mother bees

to build a torch so precious.

O truly blessed night,

when things of heaven are wed to those of earth, and divine to the human.

Therefore, O Lord, we pray you that this candle, hallowed to the honor of your name, may persevere undimmed,

to overcome the darkness of this night. Receive it as a pleasing fragrance, and let it mingle with the lights of heaven.

May this flame be found still burning by the Morning Star: the one Morning Star who never sets, Christ your Son,

who, coming back from death's domain, has shed his peaceful light on humanity, and lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Exultet: El Pregón Pascual

En verdad es justo y necesario aclamar con nuestras voces y con todo el afecto del corazón, a Dios invisible, el Padre todopoderoso,

y a su Hijo único, nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Porque él ha pagado por nosotros al eterno Padre la deuda de Adán,

y ha borrado con su sangre inmaculada la condena del antiguo pecado. Porque éstas son las fiestas de Pascua, en las que se inmola el verdadero Cordero,

cuya sangre consagra las puertas de los fieles.

Ésta es la noche en que sacaste de Egipto a los israelitas, nuestros padres, y los hiciste pasar a pie, sin mojarse, el Mar Rojo. Ésta es la noche en que la columna de fuego

esclareció las tinieblas del pecado. Ésta es la noche que a todos los que creen en Cristo, por toda la tierra, los arranca de los vicios del mundo y de la oscuridad del pecado, los restituye a la

gracia y los agrega a los santos. Ésta es la noche en que, rotas las cadenas de la muerte, Cristo asciende victorioso del abismo. ¿De qué nos serviría haber nacido

¡Feliz la culpa que mereció tal Redentor! ¡Qué noche tan dichosa! Sólo ella conoció el momento en que Cristo resucitó del abismo.

Ésta es la noche de la que estaba escrito: "Será la noche clara como el día, la noche iluminada por mi gozo". Y así, esta noche santa ahuyenta los pecados,

lava las culpas, devuelve la inocencia a los caídos, la alegría a los tristes, expulsa el odio, trae la concordia, doblega a los poderosos.

En esta noche de gracia, acepta, Padre santo, el sacrificio vespertino de alabanza, que la santa

Iglesia te ofrece en la solemne ofrenda de este cirio, obra de las abejas. Sabemos ya lo que anuncia esta columna de fuego, que arde en llama viva para la gloria de Dios.

Y aunque distribuye su luz, no mengua al repartirla, porque se alimenta de cera fundida que elaboró la abeja fecunda para hacer esta lámpara preciosa.

¡Qué noche tan dichosa, en que se une el cielo con la tierra,

lo humano con lo divino! Te rogamos, Señor, que este cirio consagrado a tu nombre para destruir la oscuridad de esta noche,

arda sin apagarse y, aceptado como perfume, se asocie a las lumbreras del cielo. Que el lucero matinal lo encuentre ardiendo, ese lucero que no conoce ocaso,

Jesucristo, tu Hijo, que, volviendo del abismo, brilla sereno para el linaje humano y vive y reina por los siglos de los siglos.
