Dear Friends of St. Louise, For the faithful, Holy Week is to the year as Sunday is to the week – and, as the psalms tell us, the faithful here must praise the Lord! As important as this week is to all of us, many parishioners are not able to attend church on Holy Thursday or Good Friday, or go to the Easter Vigil, because of work, inability to drive at night, or many other reasons. What is the “faithful heart” to do in these cases, to mark this as the holiest week of the year? Here are some suggestions for those who cannot join us for the Triduum celebrations (these are good even if you are coming to the Triduum!): Prayer: This week, make an extra effort to give time to prayer. You might prayerfully read the Gospel passage for each day (the daily readings are easy to find at www.usccb.org/bible). Or pray the Stations of the Cross or the Rosary each day. And a few minutes of silent prayer is always a wonderful way to begin or end the day. Fasting: Remember that, for those who are healthy enough to do so, Good Friday is a day of fasting (eating smaller portions than usual, and no snacking in between meals) and abstinence (no meat). If you are not able to fast and abstain due to health reasons, a heartfelt prayer or act of charity would be a wonderful substitute. The idea is to offer something up to Jesus, who offered his life in his flesh for us. Almsgiving: The collection for Operation Rice Bowl will happen at the Mass for Holy Thursday, but you are welcome to bring your gift in to the Parish Office any time. This collection helps Catholic Relief Services to touch the lives of those in our world who face the most desperate poverty imaginable. These are simple ways that we can live as one body, in prayer, fasting and almsgiving, during Holy Week. Blessing to you all! Fr. Gary Zender Please let your family and friends know that our first Easter Sunday Mass is at 7AM. Fr. Dick Basso has graciously agreed to be with us for that Mass.

Misa.

Field Trip to our Local Holy Doors— Our Parish Pilgrimage of Mercy SATURDAY, MAY 21, 3PM

On Saturday, May 21, St. Louise parishioners are invited to par-ticipate in the Pilgrimage of Mercy — A Walk Through the Holy Doors at St. James Cathedral. Our journey together will include a bilingual (Spanish-English) tour of St. James Cathedral followed by a bilingual Mass at 12:30PM. Lunch is not provided. Feel free to bring your own lunch.

For those interested, St. Louise will provide bus transportation departing from the church parking lot. If you wish to take advantage of this trans-portation, you need to reserve your seat by sign-ing up on the parish website, www.stlouise.org, or by calling the Parish Office, 425-747-4450, by Monday, April 25.

Holy doors are traditionally found in the four papal major basilicas in Vatican City and Rome, and Pope Francis has encouraged each diocese

to open a Holy Door at its cathedra, to which pilgrims can jour-ney during the Jubilee Year. In Seattle, St. James Cathedral has designated its bronze doors, covered in depictions of stories of God’s mercy, as the church’s Holy Doors.

Parenting Classes—Love and Logic BEGINS APRIL 12, ST. LOUIE PARISH HALL

This six session, multi-media program combines video teachings, written exercises and small group interactions to create a fun, and life-changing, learning experience for parents who are ready to put an end to bickering, whining and arguing and instead have a peaceful home with happy chil-dren. With a laugh-and-learn approach, parents will giggle their way through teachings that are simple and easy to learn, teach responsibility and character, lower stress levels in the home, and have immediate and positive effect.

Here are some of the practical things parents will learn how to handle: argu-ing, whining, complaining, begging, chores, homework, bullying, video/TV time, curfews, sibling bickering, and much, much more!

All without nagging, yelling, spanking, lecturing, threatening, warning, reminding, ranting or raving. Yes, it is possible with a little Love and Logic!

St. Louise School News

Our Year-Long School Service Projects For the entire school year, every classroom has assisted a service organization in hopes of instilling a deeper understanding of stewardship within our students. During the season of Lent, almsgiving has been especially meaningful in our primary grade levels: Our kindergarten supports the Bellevue Fire Department’s

“Teddy Bear Patrol.” Donated bears from our kindergarteners are used by the firefighters to comfort children in times of trauma.

The 1st grade classes are providing service to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Heifer International throughout the school year.

The 2nd graders assist the Humane Society. The students learn what it is to be a good pet owner and conduct classroom collection drives for needs of the Humane Society.

Our 3rd graders participate in service to the St. Louise Parish community by preparing the church pews for the weekend Masses.

Social Concerns Meeting Report One important issue discussed was the 2016 unsheltered homeless count that was conducted in selected areas of King County. There were 4,505 people identified in this count, which did not include the estimated 5,000 to 6,000 homeless living somewhere indoors. This was a 19% increase over last year. The number identified on the Eastside was 245. The extremely high cost of housing is a primary factor involved. Thanks to the monetary and volunteer assistance of St. Louise parishioners, SCC continues to support programs to help alleviate homeless-ness.

Discretionary disbursements were made to the following agen-cies, which includes several homeless programs. This is in ad-dition to support provided on a continual basis.

Congregations for Kids $400 Crossroads Meal Program $125 Congregations for the Homeless (Emergency Winter Shel-

ter) $300 Sophia Way (where needed) $300 The Landing Shelter for homeless 18-24 year olds $400 Catholic Relief Services (Indonesia earthquake) $400 Catholic Relief Services (Refugees) $300 Medical Teams International $400

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
