Hello Everyone,
Thank you to all the people who attended our Meet and Greet this week. It was great to see so many people walking around our school. The teachers get a lot out of meeting their students’ families and it helps to build the relationships within the school.
This week I had a parent put a written suggestion in to the office. I really appreciated these suggestions and will contact anyone who puts one in. The thing that I was most happy about was that I could read the suggestion, follow it up and then contact the parent with all the relevant information. This parent asked for work to be done on the student toilets. Although I was aware that there needs to be some work done in this area, I was unaware that there was a problem with the door locks. Handy Andy was able to fix these the next day. This is a big school and I can’t get everywhere so this feedback is really appreciated.
This week the Grade 5 and 6 students had a visit from three Richmond footballers. They spoke about leadership and resilience. The students enjoyed seeing the players and hearing about how to be successful. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the AFL and Richmond in particular. I think that this visit could have only been better if the players were from Essendon.
School Council nominations are now being accepted. School Council meets twice a term on a Monday evening at 6:30pm in the staffroom. The objectives of the School Council are to:
Assist in the efficient governance of the school
Ensure that its decisions affecting students of the school are made having regard, as a primary
consideration, to the best interests of the students Enhance the educational opportunities of the students at the school and
Ensure the school and council comply with any requirements of the Act, the Regulations, a Ministerial
Order, direction, guideline or DE&T policy.
If you would like to be on our School Council, pick up a nomination form from the office. Nominations are due in by Friday 3rd March.
Please remember that school photos will be taken next Friday. The photographers are an external business from the school, so all money needs to go directly to them and CSEF cannot be used.
School staff are on duty each day, to provide supervision for students, from 8:45am until 3:35pm. Our Breakfast Club starts at 8:30am and children are welcome to attend the Breakfast Club. It is very important that students are not in the school grounds before 8:30am and are picked up by 3:35pm.
We have an Out Of School Hours Care program (OSHC) at our school if you need to drop your child earlier or pick up later than these times. Please contact either Gayleen or Jasmine on
5945 7117 for more information and enrolment forms. Have a great week.

School Council Elections 2017
What is a school council and what does it do?
All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.
Who is on the school council?
There are three possible categories of membership:
A mandated elected Parent category. More than one third of the total mem-bers must be from this category. Department of Education and Early Child-hood Development (DEECD) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not employed at the school.
A mandated elected DEECD employee category. Members of this category may make up no more than one third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.
An optional Community member category. Its members are appointed by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experi-ences. DEECD employees are not eligible to be Community members.
The term of office for all members is two years. Half the members must retire each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections.
Why is Parent membership so important?
Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school.
Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement sat-isfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belong-ing.
How can you become involved?
The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant.
In view of this, you might seriously consider
standing for election as a member of the school council
encouraging another person to stand for election.

School Council Elections 2017 (Continued)
Do I need special experience to be on school council?
No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future. What do you need to do to stand for election?
The principal will issue a notice and call for nominations following the commence-ment of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March.
If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate yourself in the Parent category.
DE&T employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not em-ployed are eligible to nominate as parents for the school council where their child is enrolled
Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the notice of election. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination.
If there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a bal-lot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed.
Remember
Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do
Consider standing for election to council this year Be sure to vote in the elections.
Contact the Principal for further information.
