    1. PREAMBLE

This document identifies the materials and procedures to be used in the surface

preparation and painting of steel at William Hares Grantham facility

    2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS

    a) BS EN ISO 12944 Parts 18 Corrosion protection of steel structures byprotective paint systems.

    b) BS EN ISO 8501-1:2007Visual assessment of surface cleanliness.

    c) William Hare Standard Procedures.

    d) Clients specification 2408-0000-JDS-2300-01

    3. BLASTING STANDARD

The standard achieved at William Hares facility will be ISO 8501 -1-2007

    pictorial standard SA 2.5.

The blast standard is checked against the ISO Pictorial Standard to ensure that

    the standard is being achieved.

The blast media supplier carries out a monthly inspection of the blast machineand manual blasting facility. A technical service report is issued on the

operational condition of the machine and manual blasting cabinet, the abrasive

is also checked for any contamination, and if anything is identified during this

inspection a copy of the visit report is passed to the maintenance department to

    action.

    4. SURFACE PREPARATION

The items unable to pass through the automatic machine or areas not reached

will be manually cleaned using the manual recovery cabinet method, the

abrasive used in the manual blasting booth is steel grit which gives an angular

profile. This is by design, so as to provide extra key for primer, in inaccessible

or shadowed areas, such as inside end plates and horizontal cleats, as well as

    large frame boxes etc.

    5. BLASTING

    Machine Blasting

Steel is blast cleaned through a Spencer Halsted 8 wheel roller conveyor blast-

    cleaning machine.

The blast machine is charged with a mixture of Metabrasive S330 Steel Shot

and Metabrasive GP18 Grit that produces a blast profile between 50 75

microns. The mixture is constantly being cleaned during blasting operations, and the

machine has a full recovery system fitted. These systems remove dust; take

out fines etc, therefore clean abrasive is returned to the feed hopper. The mix

is checked during the suppliers monthly inspection of the machines using ISO

testing sieves. The abrasive is also checked for any contamination, Surface

amplitude (PROFILE) is checked weekly using TESTEX TAPE, the results

    are kept for future reference.

The operating mix is maintained by adding new material to the machines

    little & often

    Manual Blasting

The items unable to pass through the automatic machine or areas not reached

will be manually cleaned using the manual recovery cabinet method,

The abrasive used in the manual blasting booth is GH40 steel grit, which gives

an angular profile. This is by design, so as to provide extra key for primer, in

inaccessible or shadowed areas, such as inside end plates and horizontal cleats,

as well as large frame boxes etc. The mix is also checked during the suppliers

monthly inspection of the machines using ISO testing sieves. The abrasive is

checked for any contamination. Surface amplitude (PROFILE) is checked

weekly using TESTEX TAPE, the results are kept for future reference.

    their lids secured.

    b) Products, which have reached their expiry date, shall not be usedunless checked and approved by the Paint Manufacturer. The material

shall be kept in a quarantine area until it has been tested.

    c) The content of each paint tin shall be completely mixed and dispersedto obtain a homogeneous blend. Only power mixers shall be used.

Under no circumstances shall hand mixing be allowed.

    d) In the case of two pack products, both components shall be mixedtogether to ensure complete dispersion and mixing. Data sheets shall

be checked to establish if an induction period is required (sweat in-

time) prior to the application of the material. The pot life of the

material is contained in the manufacturers productdata and must be

    adhered to.

    e) Thinning is not normally required when using airless spray equipmentunless directed by the paint manufacturer.

    f) All steelwork will be treated in an enclosed workshop. Painting shallnot take place when the air temperature is less than 10 degrees

centigrade, when the relative humidity exceeds 85% and when the steeltemperature is less than 3 degrees above dew point, environmental

readings will be taken and recorded on GQD01 record sheet four times

    a day.

Prior to any on site repair the affected areas should be cleaned toremove all surface contamination using a suitable water solubledetergent applied in accordance with the manufacturesrecommendations.

For all damaged areas including minor scratches.

Manually prepare exposed steel substrate in accordance with BS EN

ISO8501-1 2007 ST3.By very thorough hand and power tool cleaning e.g. hand wire brushand sanding/mechanical wire brush and mechanical sanding. Theresulting surface should be suitably profiled to provide key and be freeof dust etc. prior to coating. The edges of the damaged areas should be feathered back to a firmand tightly adhered surface and lightly abrading the surrounding area toprovide a key for the repair overlap.

Prior to painting ensure the prepared area is free of all contamination.Apply by brush Hemples Hempadure 45880 Alu Mastic at 125m dftoverlapping the existing coating by around 50mm.It may be necessary to apply more than one coat to achieve therequired thickness.

Where practical check the thickness of the repair area before applyingthe intermediate coat.

Apply the intermediate coat Hemples 15560/12430 to achieve 150mdft again this may require more than one coat.

When dried in accordance with the manufactures product data sheetapply Hempathane HS55610 to the required shade at 75m dft.

    REMARKS:

Weathering/service temperatures: The natural tendency of epoxy coatings to chalk in outdoor exposure and to become more sensitive tomechanical damage and chemical exposure at elevated temperatures is also reflected in this product.

    Film thicknesses/thinning:

    Shades:

May be specified in another film thickness than indicated depending on purpose and area of use. Thiswill alter spreading rate and may influence drying time and recoating interval. Normal range dry is:75-150 micron/3-6 mils

CURING AGENT 97560 will become darker during storage. This will result in darker and moreyellowish shade than grey 12170. The colour change will have no influence on the performance. The product is also available in a Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO) pigmented shade (Shade no. 12430 reddish grey).

Application(s) Special care should be taken in relation to irregular surfaces (welding seams, undercuts etc.) asapplication with an excessive film thickness may result in cracking especially on such areas.Excessive film thickness is typically more than 400 micron/ 16 mils per coat.

HEMPADUR FAST DRY 15560 For professional use only.Nota:

Recoating note: In case of recoating with coating other than HEMPADUR, apply a (thin) additional coat of the productwithing the described directions for recoating.

A completely clean surface is mandatory to ensure intercoat adhesion, especially at long recoatingintervals. Any dirt, oil, grease, and other foreign matter must be removed with suitable detergentfollowed by (high pressure) fresh water cleaning. Salts to be removed with by fresh water hosing.Any degraded surface layer, as a result of a long exposure period, must be removed.Wateretting may be relevant to remove any degraded surface layer and may also replace the abovementioned cleaning methods when properly executed. Consult HEMPEL for specific advice if in doubt. To check whether the quality of the surface cleaning is adequate, a test patch may be relevant.

SURFACE PREPARATION: New steel:Abrasive blasting to Sa 2. For temporary protection, if required, use a suitableshopprimer. All damage of shopprimer and contamination from storage and fabrication should bethoroughly cleaned prior to final painting. For repair and touch-up use: HEMPADUROther metals andlight alloys:Thorough degreasing and (light) abrasive sweeping to remove contamination and tosecure adhesion - surface profile depending on later exposure. Stainless steel: (eg. ballast tanks ofchemical carriers) to be abrasive blast cleaned to a uniform, sharp, dense profile (Rugotest No. 3,BN9a, ISO Comparator Medium (G), Keane-Tator Comparator 2.0 G/S) corresponding to Rz minimum50 micron. .Any salts, grease, oil, etc. to be removed before abrasive blasting is commenced. 1557.Steel, maintenance:Remove oil and grease, etc. with suitable detergent. Remove salt and othercontaminants by (high pressure) fresh water cleaning. Clean damaged areas thoroughly by power toolcleaning to St 3 (minor areas) or by abrasive blasting to min. Sa 2, preferably to Sa 2. Improvedsurface preparation will improve the performance of the product.

As an alternative to dry cleaning, water jetting to sound, well adhering coat and/or to steel. Intact coatmust appear with roughened surface after the water jetting. By water jetting to steel, cleanliness shallbe: Wa 2 -Wa 2 (atmospheric exposure) / minimum Wa 2 (immersion) (ISO 8501-4:2006).

    Acceptable flash-rust degree before application:maximum M (atmospheric exposure) / M, preferably L (immersion) (ISO 8501-4:2006). Feather edges

to sound and intact areas. Dust off residues. Touch up to full film thickness. This should be done whenthe painted surface has reached the condition of being damp, possibly moist. In case of abrasiveblasting a suitable inhibitor may be used. Surplus inhibitor and residual abrasives and sludge must beremoved by (high pressure) fresh water cleaning before recoating. Cleaning with hot water isrecommended.

SURFACE PREPARATION: Remove oil and grease etc. thoroughly with suitable detergent. Remove salts and other contaminantsby high pressure fresh water cleaning.

    Abrasive blasting to Sa 2 (ISO 8501-1:2007) with a sharp-edged surface profile corresponding toRugotest No. 3, BN9a, Keane-Tator Comparator, 2.0 G/S, 2 S, or ISO Comparator, Medium (G).

APPLICATION CONDITIONS: Use only where application and curing can proceed at temperatures above: -10C/14F. Thetemperature of the surface must also be above these limits. The temperature of paint itself should be15C/59F or above. Apply only on a dry and clean surface with a temperature above the dew point toavoid condensation. In confined spaces provide adequate ventilation during application and drying.

    SUBSEQUENT COAT: According to specification.

REMARKS: Note:If used as anticorrosive protection under insulation of high temperature equipment it is veryimportant that NO moisture can penetrate during slow-down periods. This to avoid risk of "wetcorrosion" when the temperature rises.

Weathering/service temperatures: The natural tendency of epoxy coatings to chalk in outdoor exposure and to become more sensitive tomechanical damage and chemical exposure at elevated temperatures is also reflected in this product.

Film thicknesses/thinning: May be specified in another film thickness than indicated depending on purpose and area of use. Thiswill alter spreading rate and may influence drying time and recoating interval. Normal range dry is:50-75 micron/2-3 mils. Thicknesses down to 15 micron/0.6 mils (extra thinning) and up to 80 micron/3.2 mils may be possible. This will alter spreading rate and may influence amount of thinning necessary, drying time, and recoating interval.(The dry film thickness range does not take into account the correction factors for rough surfaces aslisted in ISO 19840).

HEMPADUR ZINC 17360 For professional use only.Note:

Overcoating: Overcoating intervals related to later conditions of exposure: I f the maximum overcoating interval isexceeded, roughening of the surface is necessary to ensure intercoat adhesion. Before overcoating after exposure in contaminated environment, clean the surface thoroughly withhigh pressure fresh water hosing and allow drying.

A specification supersedes any guideline overcoat intervals indicated in the table.

X Move PDS Disclaimer to Second page

Stirring: Before mixing with the curing agent stir the base thoroughly in order to redisperse any possible settlingafter storage. After mixing it is equally important to maintain stirring to keep the wet paint as ahomogeneous mixture. This is specifically important in case of a high level of thinning and/or long break in application, wherethe risk of settlement of zinc particles is the highest.

Overcoating note: A completely clean surface is mandatory to ensure intercoat adhesion, especially at long overcoating

intervals. Any dirt, oil, grease, and other foreign matter must be removed with suitable detergentfollowed by (high pressure) fresh water cleaning. Salts to be removed by fresh water hosing. Inaddition, scrubbing with a stiff brush may be necessary to remove zinc corrosion products (white rust). If the maximum overcoating interval is exceeded, roughening of the surface is necessary to ensureintercoat adhesion.
