2002-2003 Board of Directors AOF Past Presidents

As I reach the end of my first year

as President of the American

Optometric Foundation (AOF), I

must admit that it has been a year

filled with both surprises and challenges. I have

been surprised to discover that so few people are

familiar with AOF and its mission to support

optometric research and education. They, in turn,

are surprised to learn that AOF provides over

$190,000 each year in financial assistance through

its scholarships, research grants, student and

residency awards. It has been a challenge to

educate others, both within and outside our

profession, on the impact our mission has on

optometry’s future.

When faced with this challenge, I think back

to AOF’s early beginnings. Through his personal

vision and determination, Dr. William C. Ezell

enlisted the support of the profession to contribute

to the creation of “a foundation to uphold, broaden,

foster, promote and aid optometric education, the

optometric profession and its practitioners.” It is

said that Dr. Ezell “touched” everyone in his

efforts to make AOF a reality. While AOF has

undergone several transformations over the years,

the heart of AOF remains the same. Now, it is our

responsibility to “touch” others with AOF’s message.

I am pleased to report that the essence of AOF’s

mission, and the focus of Dr. Ezell’s efforts,

continues to be the William C. Ezell Fellowship

Program. Since 1949, this program has provided

support to post-graduate students who plan to

pursue an academic career in optometry and

vision science. AOF’s Board of Directors recently

contacted former Ezell Fellows to inquire of

the impact the Ezell Fellowship had on their

professional development. Not only have these

individuals helped to make optometric education

what it is today, but their contributions have had

a direct impact on patient care.

This year, AOF continued the tradition by

awarding eight Ezell Fellowships from a highly

competitive pool of applicants. I would like to

express my gratitude to the following sponsors for

their support of the 2003-2004 Ezell Fellowship

Program: Bausch & Lomb, CIBA Vision,

CooperVision, Inc., Essilor, Ocular Sciences, Inc.,

and Vistakon (2 Fellowships). One of greatest

contributions that AOF receives is the personal

commitment of these industry leaders. I am also

pleased that, for the first time, the American

Academy of Optometry’s Section on Cornea &

Contact Lenses has sponsored an Ezell Fellowship.

This kind of support “from within the ranks”

demonstrates that there

are those within the

profession who are

willing to give back.

Of course, none of

AOF’s accomplishments

would be possible with-

out the team effort that includes the AOF Board or

Directors, the American Academy of Optometry’s

Board of Directors, Section on Cornea & Contact

Lenses, Research Committee and Awards

Committee. Finally, I want to thank everyone

who has contributed to AOF. I hope you will

continue to support our efforts and help us to

raise awareness of AOF.

Sincerely,

Peter Bergenske, OD, FAAO

President

Ezell Fellows 1949-2003

Inspired by the need to advance optometric

research and education, Dr. William C. Ezell

founded the American Optometric Founda-

tion (AOF) in 1947. As a means to fulfill his

vision, AOF established the William C. Ezell

Fellowship, which to this day, continues to provide

financial support to postgraduate students who

plan to pursue an academic career in optometry

and vision science. AOF salutes the Ezell

Fellows, past and present, for their continuing

contributions to vision science and to the

profession of optometry.
