Happy Mother's Day 2014 The Ireton Informer Grand Knight’s Message Brothers and Sisters, I hope that everyone had a Blessed Easter and I hope that you are all enjoying the beautiful spring weather that May brings. Many thanks to all who helped out and attended our Spring Prom. A special thank you to Jerry Duncan for chairing this function and to the cooks and servers who helped make this a successful event. I want to thank Brother Jim Romano for hosting coffee and donuts after the Masses at Epiphany on April 26 th and 27th. Our Council plans on sponsoring coffee and donuts after Mass at Epiphany the last weekend of each month. Please see Jim to sign up and help. This is a great time to socialize and make new friends and you don’t have to be a member of Epiphany to volunteer. Let’s show our support to our Council and to Fr. John, the Pastor of Epiphany by supporting this endeavor. I would also like to thank Brother Dave Brennan for organizing our Lenten food drive. As I write this message we are not quite at 1000 lbs. of food but we are very close and we expect to make our goal by the end of April. I would also like to thank all the members who so generously donated food to this worthy cause. We still have two months in our fraternal year and one big event that still needs to be taken care of. Please remember KOVAR in May, keep an eye out for emails from Buddy or see our KOVAR chairman, Jim Cooke or your KOVAR Captain for information about when and where you are needed. May also brings our council elections. Please plan to attend our Council meeting on May 18 th and take part in the elections for our new Officers. I would like to give special recognition to Brother Jamie Miller. I’m not sure if many of our membership know this but Jamie is leaving for a military deployment in May. He will be serving overseas in Turkey for one year with the U.S. Army. Jamie is currently serving as our Chancellor and has recently stepped down from his position as Bingo Manager because of this deployment, Jamie has been a tremendous asset to our Council and he will be sorely missed. The next item to bring up is a warm welcome our new Bingo Manager, Doug MacPherson. When you see Doug around the council tell him thanks for taking over this great responsibility and offer your support. Bingo Manager is not an easy job but you can help ease the burden on Doug if you would consider volunteering for a Bingo or Kitchen team. Brothers and Sisters, I would like to take this opportunity to once again encourage you to help us recruit our Catholic friends and acquaintances to join our order. Knight and Family of the Month The May Knight of the Month It is with great pleasure that I announce the family of Bob and Marty Prebish as our May 2014 Family of the Month. Bob and Marty can always be found at the Bishop Ireton Center, whether it’s attending Council meetings or Ladies Auxiliary meetings, working Bingo or helping out at one of our many events. Bob is the Financial Secretary for Council 6189 and an active member of the Board of Directors for the Bishop Ireton Center. Bob’s experience and guidance has been extremely helpful in the day to day tasks of running a Knights of Columbus council. Marty is also very active in the Ladies Auxiliary and has previously served as President of this fine organization. Bob and Marty are also very energetic members of St. Edwards Church, both serving as Eucharistic Ministers for the parish. I am proud to announce Bob and Marty as our May 2014 Family of the Month. Thank you Bob and Marty for everything you do to support our council... (GK Jack Simila)

The May Family of the Month I am proud to announce Brother Tony Toler as our May 2014 Knight of the Month. Tony is a long time member of the Knights of Columbus and a vital member of our council. He is very active in Council meetings and an active member of the Board of Directors for the Bishop Ireton Center. Tony is also a member of two kitchen Bingo teams. Tony is not only dynamic with the Knights of Columbus but also very active member at St. Edwards Church. I am proud to announce Brother Tony Toler as the Bishop Ireton Council 6189 Knight of the Month for May 2014 (GK Jack Simila)

State of BIC…

Our meeting was held on Tuesday April 8th at 7:00. The first order of business and saddest was to announce the resignation of brother Tony Toler from the BIC Board. He has cited health issues as the reason but would continue to run the kitchen at bingo. The BIC Board wishes him the very best and his advice and help will truly be missed. We received a bid for the butcher block table in the kitchen to be resurfaced at $879. Gene and myself went and purchased a used stainless steel table for $250. Brother Doug MacPherson will buy the old table for $50. It will be installed soon weather permitting. The repair work on the front awning has not helped. It now has large tears along the building line, pin holes, and several long tears in the middle. Gene, our Building Manager, is seeking bids on replacement now. Hopefully we can continue to use the framework. At this meeting a motion was made and accepted to reaffirm a BIC policy that no pets are allowed in the building during any functions. Please support this policy.

Another follow-up meeting will be held soon on how to attract more customers. I will keep you updated. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday May 6th at 7:00. Please continue to support your Council. Yours in service Jerry Duncan, BIC President

May, 2014. Blessings to all for this most glorious Easter Season. I would like to offer congratulations to two of our members - Brothers John D. Barrett and Richard L. Fisher - on the recent recognition by Supreme Council as Honorary Life members. This is accorded to brother Knights who have reached their 70th birthday and have 25 years of continuous service. Brother Barret and Fisher will soon receive a gold membership card in the mail. As we resume our regular pace of Council activities, I wish to encourage all who are able to consider committing to collect for KOVAR. The drive will

be held the weekend of May 16th and 17th and details are located elsewhere in this newsletter. Our slate of officer for fraternal year 2014-15 has been announced and elections are scheduled for our next meeting on May 18th. Please come out and meet and greet our newly elected officers.

Military Retiree News....

The Air Force has recently completed implementation of its secure healthcare-messaging system, MiCare, to all 76 of its medical treatment facilities worldwide. As of March 1, more than 360,000 Air Force healthcare beneficiaries and 2,300 providers have signed up for this service, which allows the patient and provider to communicate on a secure network regarding non-urgent healthcare concerns. The MiCare network allows beneficiaries to view their healthcare record, make appointments, fill prescriptions and allows providers to push important preventative care updates to the members. Overall, those using MiCare can expect a decrease in trips to the MTF and more personal communication with their healthcare team. For more information about MiCare. visit the Air Force Medical Service website at www.afms.af.mil/MiCare or ask your healthcare team during your next visit. Also, the plan to cope with DoD budget cuts includes slashing taxpayer support of commissaries, from $1.4 billion a year down to $400 million by fiscal 2017. In an effort to save commissaries and protect exchanges, the chief executive officer of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), has proposed to merge commissary operations with exchanges and use resulting efficiencies to stabilize grocery prices and keep patrons. KUDOS to a Brother Knight....

Our Council has some outstanding members and one is Lt. Col Jaime Miller. He stepped up to take over the Bingo Management when no one else had volunteered. He has been a Council Officer in the chair of the Chancellor. He has provided insight and suggestions to help when problems have arisen. Sadly, he is leaving us for a year as the U.S. Army is reassigning him to Turkey. Brother Jaime says he will return after his assignment is completed. Until he returns, Brother Jaime Miller will be missed by us all and we wish him the best in his new assignment. We also pray that he will return to us safely in 2015.

A Note from your Insurance Agent WE STAND ON STRONG ETHICAL GROUND: Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy side of capitalism. At the Knights of Columbus, we know this business model is incorrect. As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Father Michael McGivney. In fact, much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can be attributed to our ethical, moral standards. More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it year in, and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very highly. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all the transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values. If a transaction makes them uncomfortable, they don’t make it. “We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for profit health care that pays for any of these, or pornography,” said the Supreme Knight. “There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life.” In the end the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality and not money-making. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the order sound financially for generations to come. “Faithful Catholics have choices when buying life insurance,” Said the Supreme Knight. “But they know that at the Knights of Columbus their policy is supplied by an insurer that shares their moral and ethical values and is guided in all of its investment and sales practices by those values.” To learn more, contact me today.

On Abortion...

For decades, Congress has upheld a policy preventing the use of federal tax dollars to fund elective abortion. Specifically, every year since 1976, Congress has attached the Hyde Amendment to the appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services. Planned Parenthood lobbied heavily in favor of the Affordable Care Act's mandatory contraception coverage, and its report called Obamacare - "a historic advance for women's health." Planned Parenthood kills more babies. Consider the toll and loss of human lives in the name of abortion. This is more than we lose any our wars against terrorism. For the first time, the federal government will provide an “affordability tax credit” to millions of low-income and middle-income individuals and families to help subsidize the purchase of health plans on the exchanges.[2] By allowing health insurers that sell plans on many state exchanges to cover abortion while remaining eligible for federal subsidies, Obamacare opens new avenues for federal funding of abortion coverage. These federal tax credits could facilitate the purchase of health plans that cover elective abortion for millions of Americans who did not have such coverage previously. Now it remains to see if Congress can do the right thing and defund both Planned Parenthood and Obamacare pertaining to abortions.

Little Angel Interment

The next interment of the little angels will be on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 hosted by the McMahon Assembly. Many of us have not attended one of these. Why not - at least one. The funerals allow some sense of dignity to the babies who never had a chance at life. This past month of April the 4th Degree helped bury 22 small caskets that held 55 little babies. That is a sobering thought to ponder. The Interment is at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1400 S. Randolph Street, Richmond, VA (Off Harrison Street, beside Riverview Cemetery).

LADIES AUXILIARYLady of the Month April 2014

I am proud to announce that Barbara Bodeman is our Lady of the Month for April 2014. Barbara has been a faithful member of our auxiliary for years. As our secretary she attends all of our meeting and takes notes. These notes she turns into clear ainformative minutes using her skills, hard work and (I suspect) magic. Barbara can be depended on to help prepare for, run, and clean up after all of our functions.

Barbara and her husband, Tom are members of St. Edwards, where they faithfully attends daily mass. She is also a member of the Cursillo Community movement, which is a person who has been on a Cursillo weekend and tries to bring Christ to others through words and deeds.

Barbara is a happily retired person. This gives her time to share with us and time for other important things. They live in Midlothian where she is the President of their community association. She has five grown children and several wonderful grandchildren.

Let me close with this acknowledgement! She loves Chicken Picken ! Every year she is a enthusiastic worker, cleaning chicken for the Brunswick Stew. This is truly a valuable and honored skill! For all she does; We are proud to name“Barbara Bodeman”Lady of the month For April 2014

The Catholic practice of assigning a special devotion to each month goes back to the early 16th century. Since the best known of those devotions is probably the dedication of May as the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it might come as a surprise that it wasn't until the late 18th century that this devotion arose among Jesuits in Rome. In the early years of the 19th century, it quickly spread throughout the Western Church, and, by the time of Pope Pius IX's declaration of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854, it had become universal.

May crowning and other special events in May in honor of Mary, such as public recitation of the rosary, stem from this time. Sadly, such communal events are more rare today, but we can take the month of May as an opportunity to renew our own devotion to the Mother of God by dusting off our rosaries and adding a few more Marian prayers to our daily routine.
