August has been a fruitful month! On its first day, we teamed with Good Shepherd Catholic Church and the Fair-fax County Health Department to offer COVID-19 testing in our hall. The event was featured on August 20 in the Arlington Catholic Herald in an article written by Mike Murphy (see the article at https://www.catholicherald.com/News/Local.News/Knights host COVID-19 testing/)

We had four Fridays of Bingo (when this article was written) and met for Saturday prayer/rosary at the Landmark area abortion facility that include a mass on August 15 and on August 22 Bishop Burbidge blessed the mobile ul-trasound equipment. On a sad note, we learned of the death of Maria Maliki, wife of our late Brother Stan, on Au-gust 18, as well as Brother Knight Michael John Stehn on July 9.

A special thank you is extended to District Deputy, Joe Tiago, for his support of our Council. He frequently helps as a bingo floor worker and also provided input on the previously mentioned article covering the COVID-19 testing that really enhanced it. Thank you.

Looking ahead, please join us in the coming weeks for the Charity, Unity, and Fraternity degree at Good Shep-herd (September 2, 7:30 p.m.), Bingo (every Friday evening, please consider volunteering!!), and the 54-day No-vena. Ladies of the Council, mark your calendars and attend a luncheon on September 12 1:00 p.m. with the GK in the Council Hall.

John Daly

Brothers, Greetings from your Corporation Board of Directors. After a slight delay caused by the COVID virus the newly con-stituted Board was able to meet in early August to elect our officers for this fraternal year. They are as follows: President – John Daly Vice President – Andy Rogers Secretary – Kerry McCabe Treasurer – Alex Amari Assistant Treasurer – Bill Burns Charity Committee – Past President Mike Murphy By-laws – Brian Green Credentials – John Hannon Nominations – Rich Hayden Throughout the course of this year we want to hear your ideas and vision for how the Corporation can continue to improve to better serve the membership, the community and those in need. If you see any of us, please feel free to share your thoughts – just don’t yell at us. We’re all trying our best! We are pleased to report that under the leadership of our BINGO Management team led by Larry Dietrick, his wife Debbie and Tim McCauley, ably assisted by our office staff, we have been able to get BINGO up and running again. Conducted in accordance with all applicable guidelines, BINGO is off to a fast start, helping off-set some of the loss-es we have incurred since March. Last year, under the leadership of Mike Murphy, the Board was able to bring to conclusion projects that often dated back to the Presidencies of John Dougherty and Joe Graf. We relined the parking lot, installed a new air condition-er on the roof, upgraded the BINGO boards to high definition televisions, Andy Rogers and Mark Busse led up-grades to our security system and President Murphy and PGK Rob Reynolds helped install a new wi-fi network while Persnickety Painters repainted the interior of the Hall. Hopefully you have noticed some of these changes. Our sense is that 2020-2021 will include upgrades that might not be as obvious. We know we need to plan to redo the roof, at considerable expense. We are also aware that the parking lot needs a watchful eye. We’ve had in-creased expenses in areas such as office staff salaries on down to pest control. Our initial thought for this year is that we need to be good stewards of our resources, particularly going into the winter months, to better understand what path nature will take us on concerning the pandemic. And lest we never forget our commitment to support your charities through BINGO revenue. Regardless of what the future holds, do know that the Board of Directors is committed to working hard for you through these “interesting” times. Should you ever have a question or concern please reach out to one of us or, better yet, attend our meetings on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Hall. Respectfully, John J. Daly

THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS!

May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know what is the hope that belongs to our call. (See Ephesians 1: 17-18) Worthy Brother Knights of District 13, peace be with you! As we continue attempts to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world and in our community of faith in particular, as we try to find a way to accommodate our “new normal”, to date, we have explored different options and implemented many new ways of conducting our daily lives and businesses. As Knights, we’re always called to serve others in need regardless of the circumstances, and to ever exemplify the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. Charity is our greatest principle and in difficult times, when our neighbors, our brothers, our community of faith, our coun-try, and the world are hurting the most, that’s when we as Knights are needed the most. I encourage all my Brother Knights of District 13 to consider a charitable act at least weekly, no matter how small or insignificant we may think that act may be. In fact, there’s no small act of charity, and charity can be expressed in various forms and forums, beginning in our own homes. One of the foremost highlights in the month of August was the 138th Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus during which Supreme Knight Carl Anderson reflected on the current fraternal year that he char-acterized as “Knights of Columbus Year of Fraternity”. He also touched us on the call we have as Knights, reminding us of our commitment to be a brother as we claim membership in the Knights of Columbus: “We’re brothers who see all those who suffer, all those in need as our brothers. Brotherhood is a commit-ment of the heart.” In this spirit, I encourage all of us to continue to recruit eligible catholic men to be a brother in the Knights of Columbus, and retain them to continue to be active in our Order in responding to our call to serve and to leave no neighbors behind. District 13 has a couple of opportunities to join the Order in September. I encourage the district councils, to the extent possible, to send candidates to the September Knighthood Exemplification Degrees that will be held on Wednesday September 2nd at 7:30pm at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, and Saturday September 26th at 6:00pm at the Fort Belvoir Woodlawn Chapel. The District leadership team has been busy despite the pandemic in assuring monthly coverage for council meetings and coordinating other activities, in addition to a few events that I ’d like to highlight below. I had the privilege to participate in a very successful event sponsored by Mount Vernon Council 5998, a Targeted Community COVID-19 testing on August 1st. The council-hosted event was spearheaded by Good Shepherd Catholic Church’s Hispanic Ministry in partnership with the Fairfax County Health Depart-ment to provide testing for over 250 residents within the community. An article was published in the August 20th issue of the Arlington Catholic Herald highlighting the event.

I also participated in an event with Bishop Burbidge and Immediate Past State Deputy Bob Szerszynski, the blessing of the new 4D ultrasound machine co-purchased by Mount Vernon Council 5998 and Ascen-sion Council 9285 for A Best Choice Mobile Ultrasound & Pregnancy Resource Center. The event was held on August 22nd in the parking lot adjacent to an abortion clinic, the Alexandria Women's Health Clinic. Several dozen people participated in the event.

District Deputy Article (continued)

FDD Frank Guest helped coordinate a request from Father Mathias Njong, a priest who served almost 5 years as chaplain at the Pentagon and has come to the end of his contract. Thanks to Springfield Coun-cil 6153 and Mount Vernon Council 5998 for donating a total of 8 Knights of Columbus soccer balls to Father Mathias for the youth ministry in his home country of Cameroon. Appreciation also goes to PGK Mike Murphy of Mount Vernon Council 5998 and Chris Krisinger, a parishioner of Saint Mary of Sorrows for donating an embroidered Knight of Columbus polo shirt with Fr. Mathias name and council on it. I have also served as a volunteer to several Bingo events hosted by Mount Vernon Council 5998 every Friday in support of the many charitable activities they support. I went there four times this month and there was an average of about 100 bingo players each time. I encourage other councils to participate in this fun and charitable event as schedule allows. A kudos to Saint Lawrence Council 9407 for swiftly initiating a plea to State Deputy Brian Ripple just a day after the explosion in Beirut that killed more than 200 and injured thousands, asking for support from Supreme to assist the most impacted by the tragedy. Thanks to SD Brian who immediately elevated the is-sue to Supreme, I was pleased to be on the notification that the Knights of Columbus is making a $250,000 donation in support of the relief effort in Lebanon. The Degree team of Springfield Council 6153 was selected by SD Brian Ripple to conduct virtual online ex-emplifications for the State Council. I’m very please with this recognition and I look forward to participating in the first online exemplification ceremony led by the Springfield team to be scheduled sometimes in Septem-ber. Springfield Council 6153 also supported a successful food drive this month at St. Bernadette for the St. Lucy Project. 6076 lbs of food was collected, $215 in cash donation, and $50 in gift card. St. Lucy Pro-ject is operated by Catholic Charities and connects food resources with local pantries that distribute food directly to their neighbors. One of the key requirements for selected Knights of Columbus leaders is to complete training for the safe environment program. The Knights of Columbus Safe Environment Program is operated in conjunction with PRAESIDIUM, which specializes in preventing sexual abuse in organizations that serve youth and vulnerable adults. I congratulate Fort Belvoir Council 11170 for leading the way in District 13 by ensuring that all of the required leadership of their council is 100 percent compliant with the requirement of SAFE Environment. Looking forward to 100 percent compliance for all District 13 councils in the coming weeks. Continuing to pray the rosary is an important part of our call as Knights, and I was pleased to participate in the Rosary for Life held by Fort Belvoir Council 11170 this month. Each council is facing different challenges as imposed by local restrictions during this pandemic. United as a Supreme to assist the most impacted by the tragedy. Thanks to SD Brian who immediately elevated the issue to Supreme, I was pleased to be on the no-tification that the Knights of Columbus is making a $250,000 donation in support of the relief effort in Leba-non. Our district leadership has been coordinating with the Abbate Agency regarding a potential districtwide Fra-ternal Benefit Night and I’m pleased to report that we have agreed on Wednesday October 28th at 7:00pm for the event. The event will have both in-person and virtual options and we’ll gather at Mount Vernon Council 5998 for those planning to attend in person. I hope for maximum participation from each council given the flexibility offered by the event. More information forthcoming with additional logistics, including how to register for the event.

District Deputy Article (continued)

I’d like to congratulate the following Brother Knights for their election to the positions below: District 13 Nominator: IPGK Don Howell, Springfield Council 6153. Alternate District 13 Nominator: PGK Joe McDonnell, Springfield Council 6153. The District Nominator assists the district delegation in the discernment process to determine the next set of lead-ers for the Virginia State Council and to select the delegates to the Supreme Convention. Looking ahead As previously mentioned above, I look forward to your participation in the upcoming exemplification ceremonies. Regarding the district soccer challenge, we’re still planning for October 17th with a rain date of October 25th. FDD Dave Lewis is still working to firm up the location as we were declined the original location due to COVID-19 re-strictions. In September/October some councils will be hosting their soccer challenge competitions. Whenever possible I encourage the GKs to coordinate on joint council events if they’re unable to host theirs due to COVID-19 restrictions. Alternatively, during the district event we’ll also offer the opportunity for athletes to compete for both council and district events if their councils were unable to host one. More on this to follow. The Virginia State quarterly meeting will be held virtually on October 10th. This is a great opportunity to join the conversation at the State level without the need to travel. Fr. Michael McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus, will be beatified during a special Mass Oct. 31 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, Connecticut. On this same day of the beatification will be held the Virtual Fourth Degree Exemplification Ceremony, and Sir Knights will be able to watch the ceremony on EWTN later in the day. I’d like to highly encourage our fellow Brother Knights that are 3rd Degree members of our Order, to take advantage of this rare opportunity to get their patriotic degree within the comfort of their homes on this memorable day. This is a great opportunity without any travel involved, to join our District 13 Sir Knight Brothers within our 2 Assemblies: Potomac Assembly 2204 and Marian Assembly 2331 as proud Catholic American citizens. The num-ber of participants is limited to 250 so please contact your Grand Knight or Financial Secretary ASAP if interested. Looking forward to a successful Fraternal Benefit Night on October 28th. Best to you and your families. “Help one another. This is what Jesus teaches us. This is what I do. And I do it with my heart.” Pope Francis. Vivat Jesus! Joe Tiago, PGK, PFN, DD13

Michael Murphy is the Knight of the Month. He served as the Corporation President last year 2019 to 2020 where the annual meeting was delayed until July and he led with strength for our Corporation and working to tackle all the activities and lack of activities during the March to July 2020 timeframe. A He was instrumental in accepting the COVID 19 tests and the use of the hall to con-duct these test a commitment to our Community and support of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, who asked us to be the site for these tests conducted by the Fairfax County Health Department. Michael even volunteered to staff the hall during the testing for a double shift. He led the efforts to make the hall and the property a greater place, including planting flowers.

SK Richard Hayden, Denise, and Kyle Hayden, Family of Month.

Richard has been meeting at the Abortion Facility in Alexandria every Saturday for the rosary, and prayers. Father Stephen Imbarrato (from New Mexico), a travelling priest conducted mass in his trailer on August 15th and came back the following week when Bishop Burbidge came to bless the mobile ultrasound equipment. There were a good number of people including the Virginia Knights of Columbus Immediate Past State Dep-uty Robert Szerszynski. As will as many Knights and parishioners from Good Shepherd, Saint Louis, and Saint Mary Basilica like PGK Steve Teslick. We even had a photogra-pher from the Columbian Magazine. For Richard, this effort is after spending Friday night at Bingo as the cashier. He even had coffee, hot chocolate, pastries available with the Bishops visit.

O Mary, you always brighten our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining steadfast in faith. O loving Mother, you know what we need, and we are confident you will provide for us as at Cana in Galilee. Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician, for those who have fallen ill, for those who are vulnerable, and for those who have died. Intercede also for those charged with protecting the health and safety of others and for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure.

Help us, O Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross, to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen.

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God. In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen. Adapted from the prayer of Pope Francis KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ER FOR PROTECTION

Just thinking . . .

Golden Rule Long Lustrous

A score or more of U.S. cities, most notably Portland, Oregon, have witnessed prolonged rioting and looting. Some downtowns experienced borderline anarchy with bloody attacks on police. A few police forces stood by without even defending persons or property. Inexplicably, a couple of mayors let chaos prevail uninhibited. Obviously, perps ignored the Golden Rule disrupting civil tranquility and legitimate commerce. While others peacefully demonstrated for particular causes such as racial equity, why did the mili-tants use those protests as cover for breaking into stores and stripping them of merchandise, and then setting them ablaze? Their motives must be held suspect. The Lord gave Moses a set of rules expanding the Ten Commandments that included this one: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” [Lv 19:18] Jesus, in his Sermon on the Mount, taught, “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you.

This is the law and the prophets.” [Mt 7:12] And again, “Do to others as you would have them

do to you.” [Lk 6:31] Those are examples of the Golden Rule taught in Judaism and Christianity. But other forms of the same exhortation appear in 12 other religions including Islam, 2 new religious movements, 2 Afri-can, and another 2 secular religions. Other versions are found in humanism and existentialism, plus social sciences and economics. And other forms of the rule have also been found in the ancient writings of Egypt, India, Greece, Persia, and Rome. In an Egyptian story, The Eloquent Peasant (c.2040-1650 BC), a goddess named Ma’at says, "Now this is the command: Do to the doer to make him do." A papyrus (c.664-323 BC) puts a neg-ative spin on the Golden Rule, "That which you hate to be done to you, do not do to another."

In the face of such a history, it might be assumed that a lot of people around the globe know the Golden Rule intuitively even if, very likely, they can’t quote a version of it. If that assumption is true, then surely some of the lawbreakers who devastate urban neighborhoods these days are wilfully harming their fellow human beings. Are public school students taught the Golden Rule? Not too likely. An online search turned up lit-tle. Almost 77 million students attend such schools; the Golden Rule Project reported only 15,550 of those multi-millions were taught the rule in 2017. Several sites urge parents to teach it to their children. Mom and dad giving good-example must bestow lifelong benefits on their offspring. The Golden Rule obviously is also religious. But its history shows it comes close to being a trait of humanity. Suppressed, perhaps, but not gone. Were that not true, earlier domestic peace would not have been recognized as the normal condition. Of course, U.S. history records such disorders as the Pullman car strike, the end to the veterans’ bonus march, the sit-down strikes, and other labor riots, the race riots. The very idea of civilization depends on most people keeping the Golden Rule. The me-generation of not too long ago was critiqued for its selfishness. For Catholics, the do-unto-others way of life is Jesus’ teaching. Our Father reminds those praying of this fundamental rule. The fifth of the Lord’s own prayer’s six sentences pleads, “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

Prayer for Vocations

Heavenly Father, bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the

world, the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of your Son so that in Him, with Him and through Him, we may love you

more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ Lord. Amen.

Vocations Committee, Supreme Council, Knights of Columbus

The McGivney Prayer

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

MIRACLE APPROVED! FATHER MCGIVNEY TO BE BEATIFIED! On May 27, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis approved the promulgation of a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to the intercession of the founder of the Knights of Columbus, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. The pope’s action means that Father McGivney can be declared “Blessed,” the step just prior to sainthood. An additional miracle attributed to Father McGivney’s intercession will be required for his canonization as a saint. The miracle recognized as coming through Father McGivney’s intercession involved an unborn child in the United States who in 2015 was healed in utero of a life-threatening condition after prayers by his family to Father McGivney.

Ladies Corner This month we celebrate the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8. To help us honor Our Lady—and to treat us, too—the Grand Knight and Brother Knights will serve us lunch on Saturday, September 12, beginning at 1 p.m., in the hall. Featured on the menu is pork tenderloin, as well as all the trimmings. (They will even do the dishes!) Please phone in your reservation to 703-360-1964, option 3.

I would be remiss if I didn’t note the passing of Maria Maliki, wife of the late Brother Stan Mal-iki, on August 18. Recognized as one of the Grand Ladies of this Council, she was born in 1922 in Eastern Europe and experienced the tumult of World War II firsthand. She told me that during the war, she met Stan. After the war, they married and emigrated to the United States and subsequently began a long chapter with the Council. May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs receive you at your arrival and lead you to the holy city Jerusalem!
