St. Aloysius team finishes 2nd in Diocesan Quiz Bowl Tourney

The St. Aloysius fifth and sixth-grade quiz bowl team earned second place in the Diocesan Quiz Bowl Tournament, on Feb. 28 at Our Lady of Mercy School. The St. Aloysius seventh- and eighth-grade team also competed. Eighteen teams competed in each divi-sion. Matches in the pool competition rounds and the semi-final rounds consisted of 40 questions.

The fifth and sixth-grade team defeated St. Louis King of France 21-5, St. Joseph 20-15 and St. Peter Chanel 21-10. The team’s un-defeated record allowed it to move on to the semi-finals, where it defeated St. George by a score of 17-11.

The final match was called by Melanie Verges, superintendent of schools. St. Aloysius and St. Jude battled in a close match. The Lions were ahead, then trailed, and were making a comeback when the 50th question was called. St. Aloysius lost the nail biter 22-21.

Team members are sixth graders Brennan Campesi, Anna Ca-mille Eagleton and Mary Stuckey. Fifth grade members are Gino Canizaro, Ben Eagleton and Jack Appleton. Alternates are Lane Poche and Chloe Khuri. Bailey Faulk and Jensen Holiday were team assistants. The team is coached by Edie Boudreaux.

The seventh- and eighth-graders played three matches. In their first match, they lost to St. Thomas More by a score of 12-19. In the second match, they defeated St. Jean Vianney by a score of 16-12. In the third match, they were defeated by Holy Ghost by a score of 7-10.

Team members are eighth-graders Daniel Woodruff, Matthew Odom and Cody Patriquin. Frank Kerr served as alternate. Sev-enth-grade team members are Lincoln Price, Kennedy Basco and Chris Purnell. The team is coached by Annette Raterman.

William Martin, a sophomore at Catholic High School, became an Eagle Scout on the evening of Dec. 23. Earlier that day, he had been in Jennings to deliver and install a bronze Braille American Flag to the War Veterans Home.

His original proposal for his Eagle Scout project was to donate a bronze Braille American Flag to the War Veterans Home in Jackson. His research indicated that by 2020, there would be more than a million blind veterans in the United States.

He raised funds for his project by offering presentations, along with his fellow Troop 7 Boy Scouts, to local groups on the history of the United States flag and flag etiquette in exchange for donations for his project. He also sold wristbands with the name of his project on them: “Touch and See.” The fundraising was so successful that he was able to donate a bronze Braille American flag to all five War Veterans Homes in the state.

The first flag was donated to the War Veterans Home in Jackson on Nov. 26. A presentation ceremony was held, followed by a cake and lemonade reception with the veteran residents. Fifty Thanksgiving gift bags filled with items needed by the veterans were

given out. William spent his Christmas holidays traveling

throughout the state delivering and installing the other four bronze Braille American flags. He traveled to Reserve on Dec. 22 to install the flag at the War Veterans Home there. The other flags were delivered and installed on Dec. 23 to the War Veterans Home in Jennings and on Dec. 29-30 to the War Veterans Homes in Monroe and Bossier City.

On March 1, William was honored at the annual Istrouma Area Council Boy Scouts of America Recognition Reception with the 2014 Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams Eagle Scout Project of the Year. His project was chosen from among the 129 Boy Scout projects completed in 2014 by Scouts in the Greater Baton Rouge area who earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a Scout must progress through six lesser ranks, earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, serve in leadership positions with the troop and provide service to the community. About seven percent of Boy Scouts attain the rank of Eagle. William is a member of Boy Scout Troop 7 sponsored by Saint Aloysius Catholic Church. His scoutmaster is Mr. Mark Ford.

By Greg Aycock Country-rock-folk band Green River Or-

dinance, known nationally for music that speaks to the soul and moves your feet, will headline the 2015 St. Aloysius Parish Fair.

Over the decade-long journey from their first incarnation as 13- and 14-year-olds in Fort Worth, Texas, to the 2013 re-lease of “Chasing Down the Wind,” Green River Ordinance has steadily evolved.

“Chasing Down the Wind” features the growth of Green River Ordinance’s honest, hopeful songwriting and soaring harmo-nies. Written on the banks of the Caney Fork River in rural Tennessee, the album captures the spirit and freedom that comes from escaping the rush of the big city and rediscovering the simple things in life.

Released on June 8, 2013, “Chasing Down the Wind” debuted at No. 15 on iTunes overall, No. 1 on the singer-song-writer chart in the Billboard Top 100, No. 6 on the Billboard folk chart, and No. 26 on the Billboard rock chart.

The single “It Ain’t Love” reached No. 2 on the Texas Country Radio Charts and was the No. 3 most-played song at this format in 2013. Green River Ordinance’s follow-up single, “Flying,” reached No. 1

on the Texas Country Radio Chart. The band’s intensity and strong fan

connection prompted EMI to sign them to Capitol Records. In 2009, the band’s de-but album, “Out of My Hands,” shot to the top of the Billboard charts and catapulted

their two singles, “Come On,” and “On Your Own,” into the Top 40.

Green River Ordinance has opened for Bon Jovi and also shared stages with such acts as Train, Needtobreathe, Zac Brown Band, Counting Crows and the Goo Goo

Dolls. Their music has been played in three films and on 56 network and cable television shows, including The Young and the Restless. Their videos have been featured on MTV, VH1 and CMT.

Green River Ordinance’s indepen-dent follow-up records, “Under Fire” and “Chasing Down the Wind,” have contin-ued to push the band’s national success and the band conducted a national tour in support of both records. Green River Or-dinance is currently recording a new CD in Nashville and Atlanta.

Be sure to visit their website at www.greenriverordinance.com and the band’s You Tube page for a preview of the fair’s headlining band. Please join St. Aloysius Parish in welcoming Green River Ordi-nance to the St. Aloysius Parish Fair on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015. Show time is 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

In our continuing efforts to promote a culture of life and sup-port those who choose life, the St. Aloysius Dignity of Life Com-mittee held a Baby Shower Col-lection Drive during the month

of April to collect items needed to help new mothers in caring for their babies.

The response from parish-ioners was overwhelming! We were able to collect enough baby items to support four centers in the Baton Rouge area.

Habitat for Humanity eliminates pov-erty houses one home at a time.

St. Aloysius just completed its 23rd Catholic Coalition Build. The build was sponsored by eight local Catholic church-es: Most Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Mercy, St. Aloysius, St. George, St. Jean Vianney, St. Patrick, St. Thomas More and St. Alphonsus.

Parishioners worked alongside the homeowner-partner, Sade Breaux, and her daughter to construct the home, and sponsoring churches provided the fund-ing to buy the materials needed for the construction, as well as lunch on work days.

Catholic churches have partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Ba-ton Rouge since 1996, when St. Thomas More and St. Aloysius rehabilitated a home for a Habitat partner family. Since that time, local Catholic churches have sponsored and built at least one home per year in partnership with Habitat.

These Catholic churches have made a lasting impact in the lives of 23 families in the Baton Rouge area, the latest being the family of Sade Breaux.

Sade was forced to move to Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina. But since moving here, she has made Baton Rouge her new home. Her 9-year-old daughter, Layla, has grown up here and loves her school and friends. Tired of moving from apartment to apartment, Sade is happy to finally have a place she can call her own in the city she now thinks of as home.

To the Catholic Coalition for sponsor-ing and volunteering to build her home, Sade would like to say, “Thank you so much! This home is such a blessing for me and my child. I’m so grateful for every-thing you’ve done to make this possible.”

Homeowner-partners qualify for homes by having a need for a better home, a willingness to partner (required to work side-by-side with volunteers on their home and the homes of others) and an ability to pay (homes are sold with a 20-year interest-free loan). All loan payments are deposited in a Fund for Humanity, which is used to purchase materials for future houses.

The goal to eliminate poverty hous-ing is seemingly impossible. However, by working together, the Catholic Coalition and homeowner-partners can help that dream become reality – one home at a time for one family at a time.

For more information on Habitat for Humanity contact Kim Boudreaux at [email protected].
