EDITORIAL Digital play with

Indian business modelshe last decade has seen rapid digitisation. However, the last three months have seen the pace Tof digitisation accelerate rapidly. Even as the world

adjusts to a new normal, the ability to leverage digitisation to improve, create and innovate business models will be vital in deciding the winners of the future. In India, in this context, the two issues that assume significant importance are business models that can monetise user bases using transactions and the ability of technological solutions to create disruptors and opportunities in previously unexplored corners. The first issue is the monetisation of user bases. As India builds its digital infrastructure in terms of UPI, access to faster data speeds and greater digitisation of processes, monetisation and, more importantly, the creation of sustainable business models that deliver a return on investment that is higher than the cost of capital will be an area of considerable interventions from businesses of all hues. Going a step further, while ad-based business models are seeing the usual players wrestle it out, the transaction-based model utilising digital frameworks will be a vital focus area in the post-COVID era. Partnerships between businesses that need to monetise user bases that have been created through significant investments and those businesses that have market-focused products but need access to a relevant user base will be a key driver going forward. The reason monetisation and business models that can help monetise assume great importance, in an Indian context, is the unique dynamic of the Indian market, that of a large macro market with still a relatively low revenue per capita. For instance, while India''s net ad sales revenues grew at 15.4 per cent in 2019, the per capita ad spend in 2019 in India is at a little over $7 vis-à-vis $695 in the US in 2019.The most significant learning from the data is that India will require businesses to innovate on the monetisation front to create weighty value over and above advertisement revenues. As stated earlier, the ability to marry user bases and a seamless product or service will be decisive to monetisation and ultimate investment returns and business success. The ability to cater to a rapidly growing large user base, and yet the ability to monetise using relatively lower revenues per user will be vital. The telecom industry has shown one use case for reference purposes. The second issue of prime importance is for businesses to be aware of both opportunities in and threats to their business models from previously unexplored corners of the market. Necessarily, in addition to the traditional disruptor of businesses, the quick adoption of digital infrastructure will mean new challenges from unforeseen competitors.

China 'bigger threat to India'than Pakistan: Sharad PawarSays, Centre should try to put international pressure on China

AGENCYMUMBAI, JUL 12

Amid the border tension withChina, NCP president SharadPawar has said China is a"bigger threat to India" thanPakistan. China's militarymight is "ten times greater"than India, the former defenceminister said, adding thatBeijing has "weaned away"India's neighbours to its side.

The Centre should try toput international pressure onChinathrough negotiations anddiplomatic channels, Pawarsaid in an interview to ShivSena mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

The second of the three-part interview series waspublished in the Marathi dailyon Sunday. "When we think ofan enemy, the first name thatcomes to our mind is that ofPakistan. But we need notworry about Pakistan. In thelong term,it is China that hasthe power, vision andprogramme to act againstIndian interests. China is abigger threat to India," Pawarsaid. The "real threat to Indiaisfrom China" which hasbecome economically strong,he added. "By creating apicture of camaraderie, youcan't resolve issues betweentwo countries," he said, referring to Prime MinisterNarendra Modi's handshakesand hugs with Chinese

President Xi Jinping during thelatter's India visit.

Asked about the clashbetween Chinese and Indiansoldiers at Galwan Valley inLadakh last month, Pawar said,"When I say there should be nopolitics over the issue, it isbecause we can attack them. But the entire country willhave to pay a heavy price whenthere is retaliation to theattack." "Instead of striking,we should try to putinternational pressure onChinathrough negotiations anddiplomatic channels," he said.

Pawar said China hadturned not just Pakistan, buteven countries like Nepal,Bangladesh and Sri Lankaagainst India.

"When Modi becameprimeminister for the first time, hewent to Nepal to offer prayersat the Pashupatinath temple.

Modi praised Nepal,

calling it Indias friend and thefirst Hindu nation. Now Nepalis not with us, but on Chinasside," the former Unionminister said. India took thelead to liberate Bangladesh, and now the neighbouringcountry has signed a treatywith China, he said. "China hasweaned away all ourneighbours to its side. This isthe contribution of the recentperiod, Pawar said in anapparent reference to the Modigovernment. He said PanditJawaharlal Nehru and IndiraGandhi are always blamed fortheir handling of China andPakistan. "But, during thetenure of Nehru, India andChina shared warm relations,"he said. Nehru was of the viewthat China will become asuperpower some day and thatIndia should maintain a cordialrelation with it since tensionswere notbeneficial to either of

the two countries, he said.Nehru introduced the

Panchsheel treaty with Chinaand there was peace in theregion, the NCP chief said.

"Unfortunately, theChinese leadership tookadifferent stand and there was aconflict. This aspect cannot beignored, he said.

Speaking on the presentstate of the Indian economy,Pawar said Prime MinisterModi should consulteconomists and experts likeManmohan Singh to revive theeconomy.

"When Manmohan Singhwas the Union financeminister, he gave a newdirection to the Indianeconomy. I was also part ofthatUnion cabinet. I creditSingh and late P V NarasimhaRaofor the turnaround of theeconomy from crisis," he said.

"Modi should also take thehelp of experts. The countrywill support him in all the stepstaken by him, he said, addingthat the "country needs anotherManmohan Singh".

To a question on Modicalling him a "political guru"(political teacher), Pawar saidthere is no such thing as guruin politics.

Targeting the Centre, hesaid there is nodialoguebetween the Modigovernment and leaders ofother parties.

Harbhajan Singh has echoedSachin Tendulkar's sentimentto urge the InternationalCricket Council (ICC) to doaway with 'umpire's call'whenever a team opts for areview regarding a leg-beforewicket (LBW) decision.

The spinner also addedthat few rules need to bechanged in order to make thegame better.

"Agree with you Paji 1000percent correct. If the ball istouching the stump or kissingthe Stumps it should be givenout. It does not matter howmuch part of the ball hit thewicket..few rules should bchanged in the game for the

betterment of the game..this iscertainly 1 of those," Harbha-jan tweetedTendulkar had saidthat the batsman should begiven out if the ball is hittingthe stumps. "What per cent of

the ball hits the stumps doesn'tmatter, if DRS shows us thatthe ball is hitting the stumps, itshould be given out, regard-less of the on-field call," Ten-dulkar had tweeted. Along

with this tweet, Tendulkar alsoshared a video, in which hehas a discussion with BrianLara regarding the working ofDRS. "One thing I don't agreewith, with the ICC, is the DRSthey have been using for quitesome time. It is the LBW deci-sion where more than 50 percent of the ball must be hittingthe stumps for the on-field de-cision to be overturned," Ten-dulkar said in the video. "Theonly reason they (the batsmanor the bowler) have gone up-stairs is that they are unhappywith the on-field decision, sowhen the decision goes to thethird umpire, let the technolo-gy take over, just like in tennis,it's either in or out, there'snothing in between," headded.

Batsman Ajinkya Rahane has recalledthe advice given to him by former Indianskipper Rahul Dravid to succeed in theshortest format of the game. Rahane re-vealed Dravid told him not to worryabout the quality of a shot, and just to fo-cus on the impact it leaves.

"Sometimes the shots you play inT20 cricket do not look good and youfeel that you got out by playing a badlooking shot. But Rahul Bhai told me not

to bother about what the shots look likein T20," Rahane told Deep Das Gupta ina videocast hosted by ESPNCricinfo.

"He said it does not matter. He saidin T20 cricket, one needs to just watchthe ball and hit it. What matters is what isthe impact of the shot, that's it," headded. Both Rahane and Dravid hadspent some time in the Rajasthan Royalscamp. Dravid had also been the mentorof the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.

Rahane had last played a T20I for In-dia in 2016 against West Indies atLauderhill. The batsman also explained

his batting approach in T20 cricket andhe agreed that he relies on the traditionalstyle of batting rather than big-hitting. "Ido not try to copy anyone in T20 cricket. The shots I play are inside out, behind thebowler and there are some other shots aswell that I have developed. I think if youare sure about your shots, then youshould back them," Rahane said. "I al-ways plan to keep my strike rate around150-160 if I am playing 18 balls insidesix overs. After those six overs, it is im-portant to break down your innings inT20 cricket," he added.

Barcelona manager Quique Setien hasadmitted that striker Lionel Messineeds rest but the club could not affordto do that on Saturday as they scraped a1-0 win over Real Valladolid.

Arturo Vidal netted the deci-sive goal in the 15th minute withMessi claiming his 20th leagueassist of the season in theprocess.

Despite dominating posses-sion, Setien's side struggled towrap up the victory with Messibeing forced to play the full 90minutes.

"Of course. I've said it be-fore, but the score was too tight. If we'd have scored more goals inthe first half, maybe more play-ers would've been rested. Theteam was tired," Goal.com quot-ed Setien as saying after thematch when asked whether Messi need-ed a rest. Setien further explained that ifBarca could have scored more goals inthe first half then more players wouldhave been rested in the game.

"They had players up front withquality and committed men forward. We couldn't cover the whole pitch. Wehad to drop back and that made it moredifficult for us. We should've put thematch to bed in the first half - wecould've scored two or three goals.

[There was] the anxiety of knowing thatyou're only 1-0 up and that they canscore at any moment. In the secondhalf, we struggled. We noticed fatiguein some players to a point," Setien said.

Luis Suarez was given rest on Sat-urday with the Uruguayan strikernamed on the bench and ultimately

coming on just after half-time as An-toine Griezmann was forced out. "It'sgood to give him a rest. Suarez hadplayed five full games in a row and hadto rest at some point. [Griezmann]came off because of some [injury]problems. He asked to come off him-self," Setien said. Barcelona is now onepoint behind La Liga lead-runners RealMadrid in the title race.
