Alphabet Inc, the world’s largest mobile technolo-gy company, has agreed to tweak its flagship op-erating system, widely used to run smartphones,

exclusively for India. This is the first time that Alphabet, the promoter of Google Inc., has taken such a decision. The offer on the table for it was simply mouth-watering:Onboarding 35 crore Indian feature phone users to digi-tal space, which is already dominated by Google, and apartnership with India’s largest conglomerate and mostinfluential corporate entity Reliance Industries Limited. The fact that the deal would help Google to get its 35 percent of its next one-billion users in one-go would havemade the deal quite alluring. The partnership betweenAlphabet and Jio Networks, the digital arm of RIL, couldbe considered as a harbinger of many positive develop-ments for India. The development of an affordable India-specific smartphone would threaten the market domi-nance of Chinese handset makers, which became a bighit with price-sensitive Indians and gradually captured abig chunk of the Indian handset market. The Jio-Alpha-bet deal would help Jio Networks to compete with Chi-nese companies better and reduce India’s mobile phoneimports from China. Deep pockets of Reliance Industrieshave also helped India in another front: The 5G technol-ogy solution. Now the country has its own home-growncompany developing the 5G technology solution. WhileIndia may still have to depend on imported 5G equip-ment for the rollout of next-generation telecom services,Jio Platforms has ensured that the country has taken thefirst step towards the localisation of the crucial telecomnetwork. The localisation of the telecom hardware andsoftware requirements would help in the creation of keysupply chain, leading to several ancillary industries. Themassive telecom backbone, which Jio Platforms hasbuilt, created the required infrastructure to revolutionisethe $600-billion Indian retail market, most of it still usesthe centuries-old format. Unlike hinging on essentiallythe western models of supermarkets, Reliance Industriesplans to create a hybrid retail sector to tap one of thelargest consumer markets in the world, by digitally con-necting kirana stores with its advanced retail network us-ing the hub-and-spoke model. The hybrid model couldchallenge the fast-growing e-commerce market by al-lowing people to buy products at neighbourhood shops, which could also increase the profitability of shopkeep-ers. At the heart of RIL’s strategy lies its potential to of-fer a large part of the Indian consumer market to foreigninvestors, especially those from the United States, whohave been shut out from the world’s largest consumermarket in China by its Communist regime.

Literature & HealthPainting develops children's

cognitive, artistic abilities

Anew research, using digitalimage analysis technology, has shed light on some of the

challenges children face when rep-resenting their imaginationsthrough the medium of paint.

The research from Japan Ad-vanced Institute of Science andTechnology (JAIST), also offeredconcrete insight into the develop-ment of children's psyches, and im-portantly, offers suggestions for ed-ucators to im-prove children'scognitive, spatial, and artistic abili-ties. Painting is arecreational andcreative activityenjoyed by chil-dren across theworld. However, children's paint-ings also serve as crucial artifacts oftheir perceptions, as they containthe sum of what children see as "es-sential."

The spatial relationships be-tween objects in paintings representpainters' experiences and technicalprowess and tend to indicate short-comings of either. These are oftenperceived by viewers of paintings, but until now, detailed evaluationand analysis of children's art havebeen subjective, relying on thetrained eye of an artist or critic.JAIST researchers Lan Yu andYukari Nagai have developed andtested a digital analysis process bywhich children's paintings can be

digitised, categorised, and thenthoroughly analysed. Content, scale, patterns, details, and the rela-tionships between objects in thepaintings are objectively quantifiedand calculated. Trends identifiedamong the subjects sampled, 182girls and 234 boys in the Republicof China, indicate that children whohave not received instruction dis-play poor abilities to recognise andemulate spatial relationships.

The youngerthe painter, theless likely that heor she will havedeveloped thesecognitive abili-ties. Lack of detailand inability toimitate objects is

identified as common to children'spainting. Statistical analysis of theboys and girls in this study indicat-ed that they have different attitudestoward painting; girls preferred par-ticipating in painting more thanboys did. This research has implica-tions in art education, suggestingthat art teachers focus on severalkey elements that are useful to thecognitive development of youngpainters. Guiding children to paintobjects outside could enhance theirawareness of their natural environ-ments. Focusing instruction on ob-ject size, and the ability to recogniseand control it could remedy thiscrucial deficit in children's paintings.

Two daily fasting diets, alsoknown as time-restrictedfeeding diets, are effective for

weight loss, according to a newstudy published by researchers fromthe University of Illinois at Chicago.

The study reported results froma clinical trial that compared a 4-hour time-restricted feeding diet anda 6-hour time-restricted feeding dietto a control group.

"This is the first human clinicaltrial to compare the effects of twopopular forms of time-restrictedfeeding on body weight and car-diometabolic risk factors," saidKrista Varady, professor of nutritionat the UIC College of AppliedHealth Sciences and correspondingauthor of the story.

Participants in the 4-hour time-restricted feeding diet group wereasked to eat only between the hoursof 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Participants inthe 6-hour time-restricted feedingdiet group were asked to eat onlybetween the hours of 1 p.m. and 7p.m. In both the study groups, pa-tients were allowed to eat whateverthey wanted during the 4-hour or 6-hour eating period. During the fast-ing hours, participants were direct-ed to only drink water or calorie-free beverages. In the control group, participants were directed to main-tain their weight and not changetheir diet or physical activity levels.

The participants were followed for10 weeks as weight, insulin resist-ance, oxidative stress, blood pres-sure, LDL cholesterol, HDL choles-terol, triglycerides, and inflammato-ry markers were tracked.

The study, published in CellMetabolism, found that participantsin both daily fasting groups reducedcalorie intake by about 550 calorieseach day simply by adhering to theschedule and lost about 3% of theirbody weight. The researchers alsofound that insulin resistance and ox-idative stress levels were reducedamong participants in the studygroups when compared with thecontrol group. There was no effecton blood pressure, LDL cholesterol,HDL cholesterol or triglycerides. There also was no significant differ-

ence in weight loss or cardiometa-bolic risk factors between the 4-hour and 6-hour diet groups. "Thefindings of this study are promisingand reinforce what we've seen inother studies -- fasting diets are a vi-able option for people who want tolose weight, especially for peoplewho do not want to count calories orfind other diets to be fatiguing,"Varady said. " "It's also telling thatthere was no added weight loss ben-efit for people who sustained alonger fast -- until we have furtherstudies that directly compare thetwo diets or seek to study the opti-mal time for fasting, these resultssuggest that the 6-hour fast mightmake sense for most people whowant to pursue a daily fasting diet,"added Varady.

Aprominent Sindhileader, who is nowliving in political

asylum in Germany, haswritten an open letter toworld leaders and humanrights organisations, accus-ing Pakistani army generalsof their involvement in reli-gious terrorism from Kabulto Kashmir since 1947.

Shafi Burfat, the chair-man of Jeay Sindh Muttahi-da Mahaz (JSMM) said thatthese generals have beenpractising worst kinds offascism and human rights vi-olations through massacre, genocide, enforced disap-pearances, torture, extrajudi-cial killings, dumping bul-let-riddled mutilated bodiesand assassinations of politi-cal activists of Sindh,Balochistan and KhyberPakhtunkhwa.

"Punjabi fascist Armyeven abuses dead bodies ofpolitical activists apart fromthe political suppression andeconomic exploitation ofSindh, Balochistan andPashtunistan chained in thefascist theocratic state ofPakistan," Burfat wrote inhis letter.

"Therefore, we appealthe civilised democraticcountries like the UnitedStates, United Kingdom, Eu-rope, Canada, Germany andAustralia to immediatelyban and seize all the bankaccounts and assets of thegenerals of Pakistan who are

living in your territory andexpel all these murderers,"said the Sindhi leader. Hebelieves that the PakistanArmy is a murderous armythat massacred three millionBengalis in 1971 and theyare repeating the same atroc-ities against the people ofSindh, Balochistan, Pash-tun-dominated areas andPoK. "Thousands of Sindhiand Baloch political ac-

tivists and leaders have beenabducted including topJSMM leader Nawab Mahar. Some of the other Sindhi po-litical activists that havebeen abducted by the notori-ous spy agency, the ISI, andare still missing include Ai-jaz Gaho, Mehran Mirani,Insaf Dayo, Dr HidayatullahJarwar, Gulsher Tagar, AqibChandio, Suhail Raza Bhat-ti, Hyder Khoso, Darya

Khan Dhakan, ShakeelHaider and hundreds of oth-ers who are facing inhumantorture in cells of ISI," saidBurfat, whose party is strug-gling for the freedom ofSindhudesh from Pakistanioccupation.

He said, "I am afraid thatthey would be extrajudicial-ly killed by ISI. These ter-rorist Nazi generals of Pak-istan Army are using Islamic

terrorism as their weaponfrom Kabul to Kashmir.""Through the military mightand religious ideology, Pak-istan misuses its powers inSindh and Balochistan toprotect the imperialist inter-ests of Punjab, which has alarge population and fewerresources and it cannot sur-vive without occupation andexploitation," said Burfat, who was forced to take po-

litical asylum abroad. TheSindhi leader said that tocheck the growing Indian in-fluence in the region, Pak-istan has sold its ports andlands to China in the nameof CPEC (China-PakistanEconomic Corridor). "TheCPEC project has threatenedIndian and western positionin the Indian Ocean and thatis why the whole region hasbecome the centre of war fa-naticism, conspiracies andcrimes," he said.

Burfat wrote in his letter,"As these all are the conse-quences of the rogue activi-ties of the Pakistan Army,we appeal to the civilisedand democratic world thatthey shall immediately seizethe bank accounts and assetsof Pakistan Army generalsand expel and throw outthem from their respectivecountries."

The Sindhi politicalleader believes that Pakistanhas also struck a deal withIran to facilitate and providethem with nuclear technolo-gy on the condition of ex-pelling India from theChabahar project.

"If this works, thenIran's relations with Indiawill grow hostile and willpose a grave danger to notonly to peace and security ofthe region but would alsohave adverse effects on thewestern interests in the Indi-an Ocean and Central Asia,"said Burfat.

While the Sino-Indian de-es-calation at the Line of Ac-tual Control (LAC) in

Ladakh is still, as external affairsminister S. Jaishankar said, a “workin progress”, China as a factor in In-dia-Iran relations became more man-ifest by two developments.

One, the New York Times pub-lished a leaked draft of a Sino-Iran“sweeping economic and securitypartnership”, encompassing $400billion in Chinese investment overnext 25 years. Two, reports that Iranwas dropping India in the develop-ment of the Chabahar-Zahedan railproject, a showpiece of Afghanistan-Iran-India trilateral cooperation.China had earlier too ramped up itsIranian presence whenever India,Japan and the European Union re-duced their engagement after 2006’s

UN sanctions over Iran’s nuclearprogramme. But the scale and timingof the current foray is significant.Former President Barack Obamachanged America’s Iran policy fromconfrontation to calibrated engage-ment, realising the fight against ISISin Syria-Iraq was unwinnable with-out Iran. This even involved Wash-ington endorsing the P5+Germany2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

Unsurprisingly, the India-Iranagreement on Chabahar port, strate-gically located outside the PersianGulf, was signed in May 2016 whenPrime Minister Narendra Modi vis-ited Iran. This included the con-struction of the Chabahar-Zahedanrailway line for improving connec-tivity with Afghanistan and CentralAsia. In May 2018, US PresidentDonald Trump abandoned the nu-

clear deal with Iran, called the JointComprehensive Programme of Ac-tion (JCPOA), imposing compre-hensive sanctions to build “maxi-mum pressure”. India always imple-mented the UN-mandated sanctionsagainst Iran but avoided unilateralones by the United States. MrModi’s wooing of President Trumpand his unwillingness to upset atruculent leader led to quietly adopt-ing the US-mandated trade and in-vestment boycott of Iran. Concomi-tantly, India also strategically en-gaged Saudi Arabia and the UAE,both US allies. Mr Modi’s person-alised diplomacy targeted AbuDhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mo-hammed bin Zayed and SaudiCrown Prince Mohammed binSalman, despite the latter’s un-savoury image.

Iran-China pact poses a fresh threat to India

Adam's CurseWe sat together at onesummer’s end,That beautiful mild woman, your close friend, And you and I, and talked ofpoetry.I said, ‘A line will take ushours maybe;Yet if it does not seem a

moment’s thought, Our stitching and unstitching has beennaught. Better go down upon your marrow-bones And scrub a kitchen pavement, or break stones Like an old pauper, in all kinds of weather; For to articulate sweet sounds togetherIs to work harder than all these, and yet Be thought an idler by the noisy setOf bankers, schoolmasters, and clergymen The martyrs call the world.’And thereuponThat beautiful mild woman for whose sake There’s many a one shall find out all heartache On finding that her voice is sweet and low Replied, ‘To be born woman is to know—Although they do not talk of it at school—That we must labour to be beautiful.’I said, ‘It’s certain there is no fine thing Since Adam’s fall but needs much labouring. There have been lovers who thought loveshould be So much compounded of high courtesy That they would sigh and quote with learnedlooks Precedents out of beautiful old books; Yet now it seems an idle trade enough.’
