Regular monthly meetings of the DefianceChapter OGS are held at St. John United Church ofChrist at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise stated. The ad-dress is 950 Webster Street-- on the northeastern cor-ner of the Defiance College campus. Entry is on thenorth side of the church adjacent to the college gym-nasium parking lot. Meetings are the 4th Monday ofeach month except August and December or asnoted.

Board meetings are held at 6:00 p.m. the sec-ond Thursday of the month in the Tiffin Room of theDefiance Regional Medical Center.

Sept. 23, 2013 Chapter Meeting ProgramAt the September 23 meeting, Michael

McMaster presented the program Henry County and theGreat War. Mr. McMaster has author a book on thistopic after reading through all of the county's Germannewspapers. He began his presentation examples of howthere were some real anti-American efforts. One suchexample was that German ambassador Von Bunstorffwas given 150 million dollars to justify in newspapersthe German side in the war and also for sabotage pur-poses. The goal of sabotage was to destroy armamentsand shipping going to Brittan and France. On July 30,1916, the greatest destruction of munitions occurredwhen fires were set on Black Tom Island. The explo-sions rocked all of New York City.

In Henry County, the League of American Patri-ots of Henry County was established to counteract anti-American sentiments. In March 1918 it boasted of 4000members. It goals were to arrest and try those who ap-peared not loyal to America. However, those arrestedand tried were mostly people in the opposing Demo-cratic party. They also hoped to remove the German lan-guage from the German-speaking schools.

To counteract this persecution, on July 4, 1918,the German Americans held a loyalty parade collectingmoney for the war effort and the Red Cross. Joining inthe parade were the mayor, the sheriff, and the pros-ecuting attorney. The beginning of the end for theLeague came when the League began shaking down thelocal businessmen. Even their own delegate P.C.Prentiss turned on the League, and as an attorney hepromised to defend those who were unjustly accused.Added to that, the local newspapers refused to print anymore articles for the League.

October 28, 2013 Chapter Meeting ProgramChapter member Rich Rozevink showed pho-

tos of and provided information about Defiance's Civil-ian Conservation Corps. Camp 571 (as well as the otherCCC camps) was developed in order to provide work

for young men following the Great Depression. Projectsaround Defiance such as ditching, planting trees, andbuilding shelter houses at Independence Dam allowedthe young men to keep recreational money of $5.00 permonth for themselves while giving $25.00 of their earn-ings to help support their families at home. The campwas located on East Second Street near the old hospitaland remained active until the end of 1941.

On December 22, 1941, the Defiance Countycommissioners voted to accept the buildings formerlyused by the Defiance CCC. The buildings and addi-tions numbered 19 with 5 of them designated as bar-racks. Later these building were used to house GermanPrisoners of war during World War II.

Nov. 25, 2013 Chapter Meeting Highlights“Come Blog with Me” was the title of Dianne

Kline’s program. She noted that a blog is like a web sitewhich hosts a collection of postings. To set up a blog,she noted that one should 1) decide the purpose of theblog, 2) find a good hosting site (Wordpress.com orwww.blogger.com are two examples she mentioned.),3) create a suitable name for the site, 4) decide if youwant to monetize the blog, 5) decide what contact infor-mation to post.

Blogs are valuable for genealogists in that dataand photos can be shared, and new relationships canbe discovered as well as gaining new information orphotos of ancestors. Postings are archived and may berevisited by all participants.

Throughout her presentation, Dianne usedexamples from her blog, “At the Riverbend,” as wellas showing how to set up a blog site.

Highlights of the DCGS Board for Sept.-Nov., 2013The board approved a motion that $100 be do-

nated to the Tuttle Museum as an honorarium in RichRozevink’s name for his presentation at the Octoberbanquet.

President Brown noted that she had given a talkto the residents at Glen Park in later August outliningwhat the chapter is and what it does. She noted about50 people were in attendance.

The dedication of the Camp Trimble marker nearthe county sheriff’s office was held Sunday, October20. Camp Trimble was a Civil War training site.

President Brown noted that the office for corre-sponding secretary is still needed for 2014.

In November, President Brown spoke with rep-resentatives of the Defiance Public Library. JenniferZiegler, the Community Relations Coordinator, notedthat she will be working on publicity for the second mi-crofilm reader. Marilyn Hite, the director, noted that thegenealogy room should be finished by October 2014

Family Chronicle’s Top Web SitesFrom a survey from the Family Chronicle, these

were the top sites mentioned of the more than 1300 sites.Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the

Internet: This is probably the most popular genealogyindex on the web. Cyndi's site features over 16,800 links,categorized and cross-referenced, in over 60 categories,and is updated with impressive frequency.

US GenWeb: This site serves as the entrance tothe massive US GenWeb project, wherein volunteersacross the US maintain linked websites about their statesand counties. This page contains information about theproject and links to state-level GenWeb sites.

RAND Genealogy Club: This site supports theRoots Location List, Roots Surname List and a Soundexconverter, as well as many links organized either by typeor by regional, ethnic or religious groupings.

Rootsweb: The website of the genealogical dataco-operative offers several different services to the ge-nealogical community, including web-page hosting,search indexes and registries. This site tries to offer linksto actual information, not just links to links.

Helm's Genealogy Toolbox: An attractive sitewith links to several tools of use to genealogists, includ-ing various guides and indexes, area-specific informa-tion and data on associations of interest to genealogists.

Family Tree Maker Online: The only commer-cial site to make it into our top ten, the FTM site offersan extensive "how-to" guide, a genealogy mall, the 115-million-name Family Finder index, message boards, abiography assistant and more.

GENDEX: In spite of its rather plain appear-ance, Gene Stark's Index of Names for all Gen Web Sitesis loved by many genealogists. Data on over two mil-lion individuals, collected from hundreds of webpages,can be viewed on this single site.

Genealogy Is My Hobby: A great site to visitwhen you're doing genealogy late at night and in dangerof falling asleep. Lots of bright colors, lots of enthusi-asm and lots of webmaster Pam Middleton-Lee's favor-ite links.
