Need answers to your mobility questions?? Want to know the latest in Assistive Technology? Would you like to learn money saving tips on how to purchase
your next van, scooter or lift? Get these answers and more from “The Mobile Lifestyle Advisor” brought to you by Disabled Dealer of Virginia and West Virginia. This monthly column might make you roll with laughter, cringe with fear, or jump for joy, but it guarantees to produce solutions that you can take to the bank. So “Let’s Get Rolling”.
Q. I have a Bruno outside lift which was mounted on my Chevrolet Blazer that had a Class II hitch on it. I decided to trade in the Blazer for a new Nissan Cube van. The dealer assured me that Nissan would cover the cost of the hitch install to fit my Bruno Outsider with the 2” receiver mount. The van was delivered and yes it had a receiver hitch on it but it was the smaller 7/8” size. Can an adapter be used on the Cube hitch receiver to fit my 2” lift mount? Bill C.-Va.
A. Bill, slap your hand for NOT calling a Mobility Dealer or at least a Bruno dealer before purchasing. Most car sales people are very knowledgeable about their inventory and will be more than glad to convince you that their solution is the best. They just don’t know what they don’t know about the mobility industry. I do applaud him for mentioning that Nissan has a mobility rebate program but he should have gone one step further and checked your receiver hitch size before assuring you that it would match. I am also not certain that he realized the weight load that will be put on the Cube after the Bruno lift is installed with a scooter on it. I would suggest you read your owner’s manual about safely driving with a hitch tongue weight that approaches 250 lbs. After checking with Bruno, (your Mobility dealer would have also confirmed this) I would suggest that you go to a Bruno dealer and have them order the correct hitch mount to fit the smaller size receiver. It is NOT recommended that you use an adapter. Adapters add length to the hitch receiver which pushes the weight even further back on the Cube making it very hazardous to drive. The good news is that Nissan should cover this with the mobility rebate if the dealer has not turned in the paperwork for the receiver hitch yet. If he has, I would return to the dealer and raise Cain, and then remember to leave the mobility solutions to the professionals, your local mobility dealers.
Q. I have been working with a local car dealership to locate a high end travel van that could be adapted with a side lift to transport my son. Everyone that he has found has a raised roof but it is 8’’ too short inside and the door opening is too small. I have asked if changes could be made to increase both the door height as well as the door opening. After waiting for answers and quotes for several days, he now informs me that it is not possible. What other options are out there for me? Nellie P.-VA.
A. Nellie, as you may have read in my answer to Bill’s questions above, you need a MOBILITY SPECIALIST. Again car dealers know cars, you want to locate someone who knows and is familiar with your son’s chair size and can suggest several solutions. Buying a full size travel van from a car lot is NOT the best financial move if you need additional changes made for a
wheelchair occupant. In your case it looks like you need a raised roof of at least 24” inches and possibly raised door panels of at least 8”. These changes alone, if they could be made, would cost close to $6,000.00 if you wanted to use an existing built travel van. This does not include the lift and lock down accessories which could add another $7,000.00 Go to www.nmeda.org, enter your zip code and call any of the closest NMEDA dealers that come up. Talk thru your requirements and discuss what possibilities are out there that best fit you and your sons needs. I can assure you there is a solution and you will be much happier with the end result and you will save money in the long run.
Q. I have noticed a “Checker Cab” looking vehicle on a car lot that was made by a company called MV-1. It has been adapted to carry a wheelchair. What do you know about it, my mobility dealer just laughed when I ask him. Tony P. A. The latest and greatest in wheelchair transportation is entering the market. The Vehicle Production Group from Tennessee has designed, produced and is now marketing the only “from ground up” built transport van for the industry. I have ask several Mobility Dealers about it, (none were dealers and claim they would not want to be) who gave me an education about the MV-1 unit. NOT made for retail consumers, bare bones chassis, lacking in driver and passenger conveniences, no front passenger seat, transport only mode, takes 10’ to enter van from side, one air bag, rear wheel drive, gets 10 miles to the gallon and one dealer claims it was funded by the President’s Rail and Transportation bill, ( i.e. our tax dollars)! Needless to say it was NOT well received by Mobility Dealers as a whole. If you look at the market it was designed for, public taxi cabs, you will understand why it is a basic transportation vehicle for wheelchair riders. Built in an old Hummer Plant, (I like to call it a Hummer of a wheelchair van) the vehicle is well built for constant day in, day out, in town running on all types of road conditions. Inside it has more than adequate room for one wheelchair in the passenger position and some left over space for a backseat occupant. The inside height provides room for taller individuals and those that have tall chairs. All the comforts and safety of the ride are reserved for the driver, as they are the ones riding all day in the vehicle. Entry and exit from the MV-1 could present a challenge as the ramp extends out to 6’ in the long mode to make it easier to climb the incline into the van. This means you need to save 10’ of clearance on the passenger side to enter, not something that ADA parking spaces now allow. Taxis however usually pickup from the curb so a short ramp mode is provided, shortening the side entry space requirement. It does looks like a shorten Checker Cab and will turn some heads especially those that have lingered for a non-traditional van like side entry vehicle. Is it for the retail trade, maybe, is it a great public transport vehicle, possibly. Does it have longevity in the market? That remains to be seen. Would I recommend it for the retail consumer, not at this stage? Let the market work thru the bugs, first.

Virginia:
Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF provides people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities. The Wheelin’ Sportsmen section of Turkey Country magazine, and its’ website, are dedicated to the education and entertainment of these enthusiasts and their able-bodied outdoor partners. Wheelin’ Sportsmen and our teams of NWTF volunteers are delivering, and in some cases, re-introducing activities such as hunting, fishing, boating, bird watching and much more to an international audience of people with disabilities. In 1996, Kirk Thomas created a group he called Wheelin’ Sportsmen of America, which would host thousands of people with disabilities at catfish round-ups and similar fishing programs where able-bodied volunteers assisted participants. He did the same with hunting, hosting Does For Does and the Ultimate Team-Up, which also paired the able-bodied with the disabled for an Alabama white-tailed deer hunt. His actions caught the NWTF’s attention and in late 2000, Wheelin’ Sportsmen became an official program of the Federation and was christened Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF. Many NWTF volunteers and chapters have already provided access and opportunities for disabled sportsmen and women. But through this program, it is predicted that not long from now, every state will host Wheelin’ Sportsmen events with the same resounding success that JAKES and Women in the Outdoors events have enjoyed. The Virginia State Chapter NWTF started its’ Wheelin’ Sportsmen program in 2002. The program has grown from one or two events annually to more than 30 events statewide for people with disabilities in 2009. For more information on becoming involved in our program here in Virginia, please contact our Volunteer State Coordinator. Mike Deane 434-996-8508 or [email protected] Website: www.vanwtf.com
West Virginia:
One of the NWTF’s most promising partnerships, Wheelin’ Sportsmen gives people with disabilities the chance to experience the outdoors. Whether it’s for the first time or a reintroduction into outdoor activities, Wheelin’ Sportsmen
brings back the joy of the wild to those with disabilities.Through events like Wheelin’ Sportsmen’s women’s deer hunts, Does for Does, or Ultimate Team-Ups, which pair hunters with disabilities with experienced hunting companions, able bodied persons can join in the fun of putting the outdoors back into a person’s life.
For more information on Wheelin’ Sportsmen or to find out how you can host a Wheelin’ Sportsmen event, contact Randy Green at [email protected] or (800) THE-MWTF
